Comparing Spore Resistance of Bacillus Strains Isolated from Hydrothermal Vents and Spacecraft Assembly Facilities to Environmental Stressors and Decontamination Treatments.

Submarine hydrothermal vents are inhabited by a variety of microorganisms capable of tolerating environmental extremes, making them ideal candidates to further expand our knowledge of the limitations for terrestrial life, including their ability to survive the exposure of spaceflight-relevant conditions. The spore resistance of two Bacillus spp. strains, APA and SBP3, isolated from two shallow vents off Panarea Island (Aeolian Islands, Italy), to artificial and environmental stressors (i.e., UVC radiation, X-rays, heat, space vacuum, hydrogen peroxide [H2O2], and low-pressure plasma), was comp

Biocidal Conditions in Low-Mars-Orbit Can Inactivate Bioburden on External Mars Spacecraft Surfaces and Dust Particles Within a Few Sols.

Mars Sample Return Program planning includes a series of spacecraft staged both on the Martian surface and in low-Mars-orbit (LMO). During the transfer of samples into orbit, external spacecraft surfaces might be exposed to Mars dust carried on the sample container exterior and possibly extant microbiota (if present). This study was designed to characterize the synergistic effects of LMO ultraviolet irradiation, vacuum, and solar heating on the survival of two UV-resistant and heat-tolerant bacteria, one yeast, and one fungus. The species tested were Bacillus pumilus SAFR-032 spores, Geobacill

Combined effect of simulated microgravity and low-dose ionizing radiation on structure and antibiotic resistance of a synthetic community model of bacteria isolated from spacecraft assembly room.

Understanding the structural and antibiotic resistance changes of microbial communities in space environments is critical for identifying potential pathogens that may pose health risks to astronauts and for preventing and controlling microbial contamination. The research to date on microbes under simulated space factors has primarily been carried out on single bacterial species under the individual effects of microgravity or low-dose radiation. However, microgravity (MG) and low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) coexist in the actual spacecraft environment, and microorganisms coexist as communiti

Angle-Only Cooperative Orbit Determination Considering Attitude Uncertainty.

In this paper, a novel concept for cooperative orbit determination (OD) using inter-spacecraft angle-only measurements is proposed. Different from the conventional cooperative OD that only estimates orbit states, the attitude of the observer spacecraft is considered by incorporating the attitude into the estimated vector. The observability of a two-spacecraft system is analyzed based on the observability matrix. Observability analysis reveals that inter-spacecraft angle-only measurements are inadequate to estimate both the attitude and the orbit states in two-body dynamics. The observability o

Pollution Effects and Management of Orbital Space Debris.

In recent years, spacecraft launches have increased significantly, leading to an increased risk of orbital space debris (OSD) collision, translating into further growth in OSD. With the recent space legislation reducing satellites' end of life period in orbit from 25 to 5 years and with the current OSD amounting currently to nearly 130 million pieces, there emerges the imperative need to reduce and manage OSD significantly. Even without the potential future launches, tracked OSD by itself is alarming and requires intervention and abrupt mitigation. This Review highlights the type of pollutants

Microbial resilience in space: Biofilms, risks and strategies for space exploration.

Biofilms are a community of microorganisms that can form on any surface, posing several challenges and significant medical issues. Their formation is not just limited to Earth but has also been observed in space stations and are termed as space biofilms. This is a major concern as certain biofilms can lead to high-risk compromising crew's health, while others have the capacity to corrode spacecraft and equipment, leading to instrument malfunction, which can jeopardize the mission. Additionally, the way biofilms form and behave in space is different from how they do on Earth due to microgravity

A Ground Support Biobarrier (GSB) for recontamination prevention.

Planetary Protection organizations at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and other space agencies around the world are charged with protecting icy moons and Mars Special Regions, areas that carry an increased potential for life, from Earth biological contamination. During the spacecraft assembly process subsystems undergo functional testing, a task that verifies critical components can survive from launch through the duration of the mission. Despite efforts to keep spacecraft clean during these ground testing operations, as well as during

Autonomous Trajectory Generation Comparison for De-Orbiting with Multiple Collision Avoidance.

Over the past four decades, space debris has been identified as a growing hazard for near-Earth space systems. With limited access to space debris tracking databases and only recent policy advancements made to secure a sustainable space environment and mission architecture, this manuscript aims to establish an autonomous trajectory maneuver to de-orbit spacecrafts back to Earth using collision avoidance techniques for the purpose of decommissioning or re-purposing spacecrafts. To mitigate the risk of colliding with another object, the spacecraft attitude slew maneuver requires high levels of p

Adaptive satellite attitude control for varying masses using deep reinforcement learning.

Traditional spacecraft attitude control often relies heavily on the dimension and mass information of the spacecraft. In active debris removal scenarios, these characteristics cannot be known beforehand because the debris can take any shape or mass. Additionally, it is not possible to measure the mass of the combined system of satellite and debris object in orbit. Therefore, it is crucial to develop an adaptive satellite attitude control that can extract mass information about the satellite system from other measurements. The authors propose using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms,

Adaptive Control for Gravitational Wave Detection Formation Considering Time-Varying Communication Delays.

A distributed six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) cooperative control for multiple spacecraft formation is investigated considering parametric uncertainties, external disturbances, and time-varying communication delays. Unit dual quaternions are used to describe the kinematics and dynamics models of the 6-DOF relative motion of the spacecraft. A distributed coordinated controller based on dual quaternions with time-varying communication delays is proposed. The unknown mass and inertia, as well as unknown disturbances, are then taken into account. An adaptive coordinated control law is developed by c

Review of Passive Shielding Materials for High-Energy Charged Particles in Earth's Orbit.

As space missions become increasingly complex, protection against high-energy charged particles has emerged as a critical factor for the safe operation of spacecraft. These electrical particles, including protons and electrons, can penetrate spacecraft structures and cause severe damage to internal components. Therefore, this review discusses the characteristics of the high-energy charged particle environment in Earth orbits. Accordingly, various passive shielding materials have been evaluated, highlighting their advantages, disadvantages, and applicability in different orbital environments. S

Tangential velocity constraint for orbital maneuvers with Theory of Functional Connections.

Maneuvering a spacecraft in the cislunar space is a complex problem, since it is highly perturbed by the gravitational influence of both the Earth and the Moon, and possibly also the Sun. Trajectories minimizing the needed fuel are generally preferred in order to decrease the mass of the payload. A classical method to constrain maneuvers is mathematically modeling them using the Two Point Boundary Value Problem (TPBVP), defining spacecraft positions at the start and end of the trajectory. Solutions to this problem can then be obtained with optimization techniques like the nonlinear least squar

Measurement of momentum transfer due to adhesive forces: on-ground testing of in-space body injection into geodesic motion.

In the frame of many scientific space missions, a massive free-falling object is required to mark a geodesic trajectory, i.e., to follow inside a spacecraft an orbit that is determined only by the planetary gravity field. The achievement of high-purity geodesic trajectories sets tight design constraints on the reference sensor that hosts and controls the reference body. Among these, a mechanism may be required to cage the reference body during the spacecraft launch and to inject it into the geodesic trajectory once on-orbit. The separation of the body from the injection mechanism must be reali

An On-Orbit Star Tracker Benchmark for Resident Space Object Detection and Attitude Estimation.

Space situational awareness increasingly relies on optical observations to detect and track resident space objects and to estimate spacecraft attitude. Many existing resources are synthetic or restricted, and few provide on orbit, wide field of view imagery with joint labels for space objects and stars. We present a dataset of near-infrared images acquired by the Fast Auroral Imager on the CASSIOPE spacecraft between January and August 2023. The collection comprises 1,378 frames with astrometrically calibrated stars and 4,237 manually verified resident space object instances across 160 transit

Continuous Low-Thrust Maneuver Planning for Space Gravitational Wave Formation Reconfiguration Based on Improved Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm.

This study proposes a three-spacecraft formation reconfiguration strategy of minimum fuel for space gravitational wave detection missions in the high Earth orbit (105 km). For solving the limitations of measurement and communication in long baseline formations, a control strategy of a virtual formation is applied. The virtual reference spacecraft provides a desired relative state between the satellites, which is then used to control the motion of the physical spacecraft to maintain the desired formation. A linear dynamics model based on relative orbit elements' parameterization is used to desc

Predicting how varying moisture conditions impact the microbiome of dust collected from the International Space Station.

BACKGROUND: The commercialization of space travel will soon lead to many more people living and working in unique built environments similar to the International Space Station, which is a specialized closed environment that contains its own indoor microbiome. Unintended microbial growth can occur in these environments as in buildings on Earth from elevated moisture, such as from a temporary ventilation system failure. This growth can drive negative health outcomes and degrade building materials. We need a predictive approach for modeling microbial growth in these critical indoor spaces. RESUL

Orbital period change of Dimorphos due to the DART kinetic impact.

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft successfully performed the first test of a kinetic impactor for asteroid deflection by impacting Dimorphos, the secondary of near-Earth binary asteroid (65803) Didymos, and changing the orbital period of Dimorphos. A change in orbital period of approximately 7 min was expected if the incident momentum from the DART spacecraft was directly transferred to the asteroid target in a perfectly inelastic collision1, but studies of the probable impact conditions and asteroid properties indicated that a considerable momentum enhancement (β) was pos

Survival limits of psychrotolerant microorganisms with relevance for planetary protection of the icy moons.

Investigating the survival limits of extremophilic microorganisms exposed to simulated space conditions can shed light on the ability of terrestrial microorganisms to survive and propagate on other planetary bodies. Although microbes can be found in all environmental niches on Earth, this study focuses on psychrophilic and psychrotolerant microorganisms (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) which have been isolated from locations of interest such as icy moon analogue environments (e.g. Canadian high arctic, Antarctica) and cleanrooms, which might be relevant for forward planetary protection.
