Competition ELISA test using sparganum specific monoclonal antibodies (Mab) was investigated to improve the diagnostic specificity of sparganosis. By cell fusion, one hybridoma clone secreting anti-sparganum specific Mab was selected (Sp-20), which reacted on bands of 32 kDa and 38 kDa. Sp-20 reacted on calcium corpuscles on IFA. By micro-ELISA, 16 of 17 sparganosis cases (95%) were found positive, but 1 of 18 clonorchiasis cases (5%), 4 of 16 cysticercosis cases (25%) and 2 of 16 normal controls (11%) showed false positive reactions. On the other hand, by competition ELISA using a sparganum s

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is an important parasitic disease in Guangzhou and is mainly acquired through the consumption of frog meat or contact with fresh frogs infected by larval stages (spargana) of the tapeworm species Spirometra mansoni.
METHODS: In this study, the prevalence of intestinal S. mansoni infections (with adult parasites) in dogs and cats and of extraintestinal S. mansoni infections (with spargana) in frogs was assessed. In addition, a questionnaire survey was carried out among residents in Guangzhou City in order to evaluate their awareness about the medical and epidemiological

Diagnostic specificity of 36 and 31 kDa proteins of Spirometra erinacei plerocercoid (sparganum) was evaluated by micro-ELISA in tissue invading nematodiasis such as 25 gnathostomiasis, 33 angiostrongyliasis, 22 trichinellosis patients, and 20 normal control. All but one patient each in 3 nematodiases showed the antibody levels of negative range. The positively reacted patients were regarded as concomitant infections of sparganum because immunized or hyperinfected rabbit serum of the nematodes did not react crossly to the antigen.

Sparganosis is a parasitic infection caused by the metacestode stage of Spirometra mansoni and some other related diphyllobothriidean cestodes. Although various internal organs were involved in sparganum infection, pulmonary and pleural involvement is rarely reported. We herein report an uncommon form of sparganosis manifested by pleuritis and decreased peripheral blood eosinophils. Sparganum worms were found in the pleural effusion accidentally and confirmed by pathological diagnosis. After being treated with praziquantel for 10 days, the patient's symptoms, laboratory examinations, and imagi

Sparganosis is an infection caused by migrating larvae of the cestode genus Spirometra. There have been approximately 62 cases of sparganosis reported in the United States. Although a subcutaneous mass is the most common manifestation, sparganosis is not well-described in the dermatology literature. We present a case of cutaneous sparganosis in a 52-year-old Filipino American woman. Histologically, the sections showed a granulomatous panniculitis and dermatitis containing a section of a sparganum. A transverse section of an intact sparganum reveals an eosinophilic cuticle, loose stroma, calcar

We report a case of eosinophilic cystitis caused by vesical sparganosis. The patient had a history of eating raw frogs and presented with a mass in the bladder associated with peripheral eosinophilia and increased serum antibody titer against sparganum. Pathologically, a characteristic sinuous necrosis representing worm tracks was noted with massive diffuse infiltration of eosinophils in the wall of the bladder. The serum titer of sparganum-specific antibody returned to normal after surgical resection of the lesion. This finding emphasizes the importance of suspecting parasitic origin in cases

PURPOSE: To present a case of ocular sparoganosis presenting as itching sensation.
METHODS: A 60-year-old woman presented for removal of an itchy subconjunctival mass in her left eye. Her ocular findings were normal, except for a subconjunctival mass (1.5 x 1.5 mm).
RESULTS: A parasite excised from the subconjunctival mass was identified as a sparganum, by microscopic examination after hematoxylin-eosin staining. The mummified parasite was identified as the plerocercoid phase of the sparganum, by microscopy.
CONCLUSIONS: Although rare, parasitic disease should be suspected in a palpable sub

We report a case of subcutaneous sparganosis in a 68-year-old female Japanese immigrant in Germany. The patient complained of a painless erythema caudal of the umbilicus with a palpable subcutaneous cherry-sized lump. Polymerase chain reaction on formalin-fixed parasite tissue identified Spirometra erinaceieuropaei as the causative agent; the proliferative form of sparganosis, which is caused by the branching and disseminating Sparganum proliferum, could, thus, be excluded. From the excised sparganum, an immunofluorescence test was established and revealed an antibody response directed against

Sparganosis mansoni is a kind of parasitic infective disease, rarely seen in clinic. A case of sparganosis mansoni is reported in this article. The patient was a 25-year-old male, who came to Xiangya Hospital on September 26, 2007 because of a mass in the left cheek. A white tape-like body was found during the operation and recognized to be a live parasite. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay of the serum revealed positivity against Spirometra mansoni. The final identification proved that the white tape-like body was Sparganum mansoni. The disease of this patient was caused by eating raw flesh o

Sparganosis is one of the top three tissue-dwelling heterologous helminthic diseases, along with cysticercosis and paragonimiasis, in Korea. Due to a lack of effective early diagnosis and treatment methods, this parasitic disease is regarded as a public health threat. This study evaluated reactivity, against sparganum extracts, of sera from inhabitants of Cheorwon-gun, Goseong-gun and Ongjin-gun in Korea. The sera from 836 subjects were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoblot analysis. The sera from 18 (5.8%) and 15 (5.1%) inhabitants in Cheorwon-gun (n = 312) and Goseong

A 48-year-old man was admitted because of ischialgia. The CT scanning revealed tumors in the right pelvic cavity and the gluteal muscle. The bodies of Sparganum proliferum and granulation tissues were revealed by the tumor biopsy. In this hospital course, the chest roentgenogram revealed patchy infiltrative shadows in both lungs and left pleural effusion while chest CT scanning revealed multiple nodular shadows. Eosinophils increased in the peripheral blood and transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) showed non-destructive vasculitis with eosinophilic infiltration. The pulmonary lesion was diagnosed

Human sparganosis is a rare parasitic disease caused by infection with the tapeworm Sparganum, the migrating plerocercoid (second stage) larva of Spirometra species. Sparganosis usually involves subcutaneous tissues and/or muscles of various parts of the body, but involvement of other sites such as the brain, eye, peritoneopleural cavity, urinary track, scrotum, and abdominal viscera has also been documented. Infections caused by sparganum have a worldwide distribution but are most common in Southeast Asia such as China, Japan, and South Korea. Rectal sparganosis is an uncommon disease but sho

Human sparganosis is a rare parasitic disease infected by plerocercoid larva (sparganum) of Spirometra species. It was usually diagnosed accidentally and has long been underestimated. In this report, we describe a 53-year-old woman presenting as an enlarging subcutaneous nodule in the right thigh for 3 months, which was excised in the belief that it was a lipoma. Characteristic sparganum accompanied by granulomatous inflammation, eosinophilic infiltrate and sinus tract in the subcutaneous tissue were discovered under microscopic examination of the excised tissue. Intramuscular sparganosis is not common, and its rarity makes it difficult to be distinguished from soft tissue tumors. A case of rare intramuscular sparganosis is reported. A 44-year-old man presented with a painful mass in the left thigh for 8 months, which was initially diagnosed a as soft tissue tumor. Ultrasonography and MRI revealed a multilobulated mass in the sartorius muscle. After the needle biopsy under the guidance of ultrasonography, sparganum was discovered under microscopic examination of the excised tissue. Surgical excision was performed, and a live larva of sparganum was remo

Sparganosis is a parasitic infection caused by the sparganum, the plercercoid of the genus Spirometra. The preoperative diagnosis of breast sparganosis is difficult in most cases because it is a rare parasitic infection less than 2% of all cases. We report a 62-year-old woman case of breast sparganosis that were confirmed by surgical removal of worms from the right breast. The radiologic images of the patient also revealed characteristic features of breast sparganosis. The patient described the migrating palpable breast mass, which strongly suggested the possibility of breast sparganosis. The

To observe the antigenic protein fractions in saline extract of Spirometra mansoni plerocercoid (sparganum), the crude extract was separated in reducing conditions of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The proteins, transferred by electrophoresis to nitrocellulose paper, were reacted with sera from 15 surgically confirmed sparganosis and 24 cysticercosis patients for immunoblotting. Out of 30 identified protein bands in the extract, bands of 29 and 36 kilodaltons (kDa) were the strongest and the most frequently reacting with specific antibody (IgG) in spargan

The incidence of sparganosis, a parasitic disease caused by plerocercoid larvae of the genus Spirometra, has gradually risen worldwide (especially in remote areas) in recent years. Pulmonary and pleural sparganosis, as well as other sites of infestation, including the subcutaneous tissues, the abdominal viscera, brain and eyes, has been reported. In clinical practice, due to the atypical signs and symptoms as well as limited laboratory approaches for the specific detection of sparganum, sparganosis is often misdiagnosed. In the present study, an 11-year-old girl visited the Department of Infec

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection of the brain tissue. The remission of MRI change and clinical symptom has been used to evaluate the therapeutic effect. However, there is no study to correlate the serum IgG antibody level of sparganum to the prognosis of disease after treatment.
METHODS: 87 patients with cerebral sparganosis were collected from three medical centers. Clinical symptoms and MRI changes were evaluated at 12 months after initial treatment, and serum IgG antibody level of sparganum was evaluated at 2, 6, and 12 months after treatment. The positive c
