Auditory spatial and object processing in the human planum temporale: no evidence for selectivity.

Although it is generally acknowledged that at least two processing streams exist in the primate cortical auditory system, the function of the posterior dorsal stream is a topic of much debate. Recent studies have reported selective activation to auditory spatial change in portions of the human planum temporale (PT) relative to nonspatial stimuli such as pitch changes or complex acoustic patterns. However, previous work has suggested that the PT may be sensitive to another kind of nonspatial variable, namely, the number of auditory objects simultaneously presented in the acoustic signal. The go

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder involves differential cortical processing in a visual spatial attention paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Inattention is undoubtedly one of the main characteristics of Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Nevertheless, a growing corpus of evidence shows that not all attentional processes are affected in this condition. This study aimed to explore the distribution of attentional resources in children with ADHD via a spatially shifted double-oddball visual task. METHODS: We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) for all visual stimuli. Subjects were instructed to allocate attention in a specific area of visual space while ignoring all stimuli presented outside. Ten male chi

Role of the posterior parietal association cortex in the processing of spatial event information.

Humans and monkeys with damage to the parietal association cortex (PC) exhibit deficits on visual-spatial tasks that are often dependent upon the attentional requirements of the task at hand. In order to test whether there is a correspondence between humans and rats in terms of the function of PC in the processing of spatial information, separate groups of rats were trained in two list-learning tasks, a win-stay task and a win-shift task, on an eight-arm radial maze. It is assumed that these two tasks vary in degree of required attention effort, because the win-shift rule is considerably easie

Spatial attention triggered by eye gaze enhances and speeds up visual processing in upper and lower visual fields beyond early striate visual processing.

OBJECTIVE: The detection of a lateralized visual target is faster when preceded by a face gazing to the location of this stimulus. Here we aimed to clarify the time-course of the visual processing modulated by these reflexive shifts of attention. METHODS: ERPs were measured on 16 subjects performing a speeded location task on a circular checkerboard. The checkerboard target appeared either on the left or right of the upper or lower visual field, and was preceded by a central face orienting its gaze obliquely to one of the four possible corner locations for the target to appear. RESULTS: Cong

SpaDiff denoises sequence-based spatial transcriptomics via diffusion process.

Spot-swapping in sequence-based spatial transcriptomics redistributes RNA molecules across neighboring spots, distorting spatial gene expression and biasing downstream analysis. We introduce SpaDiff, a mass-conserving denoising framework that corrects this artifact through score-guided reverse diffusion. Across simulated and real spatial transcriptomics datasets, SpaDiff consistently improves the recovery of spatial gene-expression distributions. In particle-level simulations with known ground truth, SpaDiff robustly restores gene-level spatial patterns across diverse contamination regimes. In

Capturing peripersonal spatial neglect: an electronic method to quantify visuospatial processes.

Computerized as well as paper-and-pencil tasks are applied in mapping visuospatial neglect in experimental research and clinical practice. This article presents a new kind of computer-based assessment method, using an electronic pen display and user-friendly software. The approach is tailored to specific spatial processes and highlights the usefulness of a pen display in neglect patients. The advantages of the introduced method are illustrated by a recently designed battery of classic, as well as new, types of tests. The development of the appropriate stimuli and the assorted scoring systems i

RNA Organelles in DNA-Based Artificial Cells Provide Spatial Aptamer Functions and Enhanced Signal Processing.

Naturally occurring biomolecular condensates orchestrate key cellular processes by creating spatially distinct reaction environments, yet engineering synthetic condensates that combine structural programmability with spatioselectively encoded function remains challenging. Here, we report multiphase DNA-RNA artificial cells (ACs) that embed functional RNA condensates as organelle-like compartments within programmable DNA core-shell ACs. A single thermal assembly protocol yields three-phase ACs comprising a glassy RNA core organelle embedded in a liquid-like DNA compartment, surrounded by a cros

Perceptual and emotional processing deficits in severe alcohol use disorder: The role of spatial frequency.

Emotional facial expression decoding deficits are consistently reported in severe Alcohol Use Disorder (sAUD), hampering social interactions and promoting relapse. Individuals with sAUD also exhibit visuo-perceptive deficits, persisting despite abstinence. However, these two key impairments of sAUD have never been considered simultaneously. We explored the role of perception in emotional facial expression processing by directly manipulating the spatial frequency content of emotional faces. Thirty-one patients and 30 matched healthy controls performed emotion detection, discrimination, and labe

Similar processing of novelty in rat dorsal and intermediate CA1 despite differences in spatial tuning.

Elucidating the fundamental neural mechanisms of hippocampal information processing is necessary for understanding memory formation and related brain disorders. Differences in hippocampal genetics, anatomy, and connectivity across the longitudinal axis suggest functional heterogeneity in this structure. The dorsal pole is suggested to be primarily involved in spatial processing, whereas the ventral pole is implicated in emotional processing. Connectivity and genetic studies show this functional segregation is more prominent near their respective poles and weaker toward the intermediate region.

Developmental auditory deprivation in one ear impairs brainstem binaural processing and reduces spatial hearing acuity.

Early sensory experience can exert lasting perceptual consequences. For example, a brief period of auditory deprivation early in life can lead to persistent spatial hearing deficits. Some forms of hearing loss (i.e., conductive; CHL) can distort acoustical cues needed for spatial hearing, which depend on inputs from both ears. We hypothesize that asymmetric acoustic input during development disrupts auditory circuits that integrate binaural information. Here, we identify prolonged maturation of the binaural auditory brainstem in the guinea pig by tracking auditory evoked potentials across deve

Reconciling the object and spatial processing views of the perirhinal cortex through task-relevant unitization.

The perirhinal cortex is situated on the border between sensory association cortex and the hippocampal formation. It serves an important function as a transition area between the sensory neocortex and the medial temporal lobe. While the perirhinal cortex has traditionally been associated with object coding and the "what" pathway of the temporal lobe, current evidence suggests a broader function of the perirhinal cortex in solving feature ambiguity and processing complex stimuli. Besides fulfilling functions in object coding, recent neurophysiological findings in freely moving rodents indicate

Visuo-spatial orienting during active exploratory behavior: Processing of task-related and stimulus-related signals.

Functional imaging studies have associated dorsal and ventral fronto-parietal regions with the control of visuo-spatial attention. Previous studies demonstrated that the activity of both the dorsal and the ventral attention systems can be modulated by many different factors, related both to the stimuli and the task. However, the vast majority of this work utilized stereotyped paradigms with simple and repeated stimuli. This is at odd with any real life situation that instead involve complex combinations of different types of co-occurring signals, thus raising the question of the ecological sig

Influence of spatial frequency and emotion expression on face processing in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in facial emotion processing is a major characteristic of patients with panic disorder. It is known that visual stimuli with different spatial frequencies take distinct neural pathways. This study investigated facial emotion processing involving stimuli presented at broad, high, and low spatial frequencies in patients with panic disorder. METHODS: Eighteen patients with panic disorder and 19 healthy controls were recruited. Seven event-related potential (ERP) components: (P100, N170, early posterior negativity (EPN); vertex positive potential (VPP), N250, P300; and late p

Electrophysiological indices of spatial attention during global/local processing in good and poor phonological decoders.

Previous research suggests a relationship between spatial attention and phonological decoding in developmental dyslexia. The aim of this study was to examine differences between good and poor phonological decoders in the allocation of spatial attention to global and local levels of hierarchical stimuli. A further aim was to investigate the relationship between global/local processing and electrophysiological indices (N1, N2) of spatial attention in these groups. Good (n=18) and poor (n=16) phonological decoders were selected on the basis of non-word reading ability. Participants responded to e

Auditory agnosia and auditory spatial deficits following left hemispheric lesions: evidence for distinct processing pathways.

Auditory recognition and auditory spatial functions were studied in four patients with circumscribed left hemispheric lesions. Patient FD was severely deficient in recognition of environmental sounds but normal in auditory localisation and auditory motion perception. The lesion included the left superior, middle and inferior temporal gyri and lateral auditory areas (as identified in previous anatomical studies), but spared Heschl's gyrus, the acoustic radiation and the thalamus. Patient SD had the same profile as FD, with deficient recognition of environmental sounds but normal auditory locali

Hemispheric asymmetry in the processing of high and low spatial frequencies: a facial recognition task.

The research investigated the relationship between spatial frequency and visual field in a facial recognition task. Faces of neutral affect (Ekman, 1979) were tachistoscopically presented to the right or left visual field. The faces were presented alone, or masked with square wave gratings of 1, 24, or 48 cycles/degree, for a duration of 10 msec. Accuracy in recognizing each target face from a group of five served as the dependent measure. Subjects were 15 males and 15 females. ANOVA results included a frequency x visual field interaction effect (p less than .001). As was hypothesized, LVF err

Pubertal immune stress transiently alters spatial memory processes in adulthood.

Pubertal immune challenge can permanently alter hippocampus-dependent memory processes in a sex-specific manner. Although gonadal hormones can influence various cognitive processes, their role in regulating the cognitive sequelae to pubertal immune challenge has not been thoroughly assessed. We examined whether a pubertal immune challenge could affect hippocampus-dependent memory functions in adulthood and whether these effects are regulated by gonadal steroid hormones. We hypothesized that exposure to an immune challenge during puberty would induce sex-specific deficits in the behavioral and

Spatial scale modulates the strength of ecological processes driving disease distributions.

Humans are altering the distribution of species by changing the climate and disrupting biotic interactions and dispersal. A fundamental hypothesis in spatial ecology suggests that these effects are scale dependent; biotic interactions should shape distributions at local scales, whereas climate should dominate at regional scales. If so, common single-scale analyses might misestimate the impacts of anthropogenic modifications on biodiversity and the environment. However, large-scale datasets necessary to test these hypotheses have not been available until recently. Here we conduct a cross-contin
