This work describes the first fully direct coupling of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with mass spectrometry. An inlet system using a septum as the only interface between the ambient and the high-vacuum mass spectrometer was constructed to allow the introduction of the SPME needle directly into the ionization region of a mass spectrometer. Structural changes in proteins of erythrocyte membranes induced by gamma-radiation at doses of 10-10(3) Gy were studied using the method of tryptophan fluorescence quenching by acrylamide. A quantitative method has been developed for valproic acid and twelve of its metabolites using capillary gas chromatography--mass spectrometry with selected-ion monitoring. The method is applicable to serum or urine and all metabolites are measured in a single run. The objective classification of results of the previously described symmetry detector method for gamma encephalography is reported. The different evaluation parameters were chosen after comparing their detectability in different subregions of the head or as a result of findings in certain patients. The detectability was estimated from the results of phantom measurements related to the normal ranges of evaluation parameters. The borders of the classification criterion are discussed in relation to the number of evaluation parameters used.
