Quantifying and Improving the Performance of Speech Recognition Systems on Dysphonic Speech.

OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to quantify how current speech recognition systems perform on dysphonic input and if they can be improved. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental machine learning methods based on a retrospective database. SETTING: Single academic voice center. METHODS: A database of dysphonic speech recordings was created and tested against 3 speech recognition platforms. Platform performance on dysphonic voice input was compared to platform performance on normal voice input. A custom speech recognition model was trained on voice from patients with spasmodic dysphonia or vocal cord paralysi

A Longitudinal Evaluation of Speech Rate in Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech.

Purpose Individuals with primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) have apraxia of speech (AOS) in which disruptions in articulation or prosody predominate the speech pattern, referred to, respectively, as phonetic or prosodic subtypes. Many develop aphasia and/or dysarthria. Past research has demonstrated that simple temporal acoustic measures are sensitive to the presence of AOS. The aim of this study was to describe the change in temporal acoustic measures over time and assess if specific patterns of AOS or co-occurring aphasia or dysarthria impact the rate of change over time. Method D

Speech and motor speech disorders and intelligibility in adolescents with Down syndrome.

The goal of this research was to assess the support for motor speech disorders as explanatory constructs to guide research and treatment of reduced intelligibility in persons with Down syndrome (DS). Participants were the 45 adolescents with DS in the prior paper who were classified into five mutually-exclusive motor speech classifications using the Speech Disorders Classification System. An ordinal index classified participants' percentage of intelligible words in conversation as High (≥ 85%), Moderate (80% - 84.9%), or Low (< 80%). Statistical analyses tested for significant differences in i

Childhood apraxia of speech: A survey of praxis and typical speech characteristics.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate current knowledge of the diagnosis childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) in Sweden and compare speech characteristics and symptoms to those of earlier survey findings in mainly English-speakers. METHOD: In a web-based questionnaire 178 Swedish speech-language pathologists (SLPs) anonymously answered questions about their perception of typical speech characteristics for CAS. They graded own assessment skills and estimated clinical occurrence. RESULTS: The seven top speech characteristics reported as typical for children with CAS were: inconsis

Dysfluencies in the speech of adults with intellectual disabilities and reported speech difficulties.

BACKGROUND: In individuals with an intellectual disability, speech dysfluencies are more common than in the general population. In clinical practice, these fluency disorders are generally diagnosed and treated as stuttering rather than cluttering. PURPOSE: To characterise the type of dysfluencies in adults with intellectual disabilities and reported speech difficulties with an emphasis on manifestations of stuttering and cluttering, which distinction is to help optimise treatment aimed at improving fluency and intelligibility. METHOD: The dysfluencies in the spontaneous speech of 28 adults (

Speech-like and non-speech lip kinematics and coordination in aphasia.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the well-known linguistic processing impairments in aphasia, oro-motor skills and articulatory implementation of speech segments are reported to be compromised to some degree in most types of aphasia. AIMS: This study aimed to identify differences in the characteristics and coordination of lip movements in the production of a bilabial closure gesture between speech-like and non-speech tasks in individuals with aphasia and healthy control subjects. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Upper and lower lip movement data were collected for a speech-like and a non-speech task using an

Speech telepractice: installing a speech therapy upgrade for the 21st century.

Much of speech therapy involves the clinician guiding the therapeutic process (e.g., presenting stimuli and eliciting client responses). However, this Brief Communication describes a different approach to speech therapy delivery. Clinicians at Waldo County General Hospital (WCGH) use high definition audio and video to engage clients in telepractice using interactive web-based virtual environments. This technology enables clients and their clinicians to co-create salient treatment activities using authentic materials captured via digital cameras, video and/or curricular materials. Both therapis

Cleft palate speech and velopharyngeal dysfunction: the approach of the speech therapist.

Cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction cause communication disorders in many different ways (articulation, resonance, voice and language). These problems are mainly present in childhood but remain a matter of concern for many years. Speech and language pathologists are involved in speech and language assessment and speech therapy procedures. This article gives an overview of the standard procedures of the speech pathologist in a cleft palate team and discusses the relationship between the team and private practices or school teams, as well as the practical aspects relating to reimbursemen

Metrical analysis of the speech of children with suspected developmental apraxia of speech.

Previous studies have shown that metrical analysis accounts for syllable omissions in young normally developing children better than prior perspectives. This approach has not yet been applied to children with disorders. Inappropriate sentential stress has been proposed as a diagnostic marker for a subgroup of children with suspected developmental apraxia of speech (SD-DAS), suggesting that the application of metrical perspectives to this population may be appropriate. This report extends the goal of identifying diagnostic markers for SD-DAS using analytic procedures from metrical phonology. Th

[Progressive loss of speech output with festinating speech--a case report].

Primary progressive aphasia is a rare disorder of unknown cause. We report a patient with progressive loss of speech output, a clinical variant of PPA, characterized by festinating speech. A 60-year-old right handed woman was admitted to our hospital, because of progressive deterioration of her speech. On admission, she was alert and orientated without dementia. A severe impairment of her articulation was observed: her speech rate was so fast that her speech became almost intelligible. The orofacial apraxia and difficulty in tapping were also present. The other neurological findings were norma

Surgical speech disorders.

Most speech disorders of childhood are treated with speech therapy. However, two conditions, ankyloglossia and velopharyngeal dysfunction, may be amenable to surgical intervention. It is important for surgeons to work with experienced speech language pathologists to diagnose the speech disorder. Children with articulation disorders related to ankyloglossia may benefit from frenuloplasty. Children with velopharyngeal dysfunction should have standardized clinical evaluation and instrumental asseessment of velopharyngeal function. Surgeons should develop a treatment protocol to optimize speech ou

The Art of Speech: Elocution, Speech Training, Speech Therapy, and the Performative Limits of Class in Mid-twentieth-century Britain.

This article argues that elocution, speech training, and speech therapy-three professions concerned with the voice-were intimately bound up with a shifting politics of class in early- and mid-twentieth-century Britain. The last two, in particular, attempted to stake new claims in the changed landscape of the post-1945 welfare state. Proponents of speech training distinguished themselves from elocutionists and saw their role to improve children's speech, but they performatively disavowed class as an organizing category within it. This was paralleled by speech therapy, which emerged as a formal

Speech aid prosthesis.

Velopharyngeal defects are common problem encountered in dentistry, different prosthetic designs can be used; however, the prosthesis should be comfortable and function properly. Surgical treatment is the treatment of choice, but there are few patients who are not able to receive the surgical intervention; in such cases prosthetic management is considered using speech bulb prosthesis to overcome nasal twang and nasal regurgitation.
