Effect of frequency compression on fricative perception between normal-hearing English and Mandarin listeners.

High-frequency speech information is susceptible to inaccurate perception in even mild to moderate forms of hearing loss. Some hearing aids employ frequency-lowering methods such as nonlinear frequency compression (NFC) to help hearing-impaired individuals access high-frequency speech information in more accessible lower-frequency regions. As such techniques cause significant spectral distortion, tests such as the S-Sh Confusion Test help optimize NFC settings to provide high-frequency audibility with the least distortion. Such tests have been traditionally based on speech contrasts pertinent

The effects of age and cochlear hearing loss on temporal fine structure sensitivity, frequency selectivity, and speech reception in noise.

Temporal fine structure (TFS) sensitivity, frequency selectivity, and speech reception in noise were measured for young normal-hearing (NHY), old normal-hearing (NHO), and hearing-impaired (HI) subjects. Two measures of TFS sensitivity were used: the "TFS-LF test" (interaural phase difference discrimination) and the "TFS2 test" (discrimination of harmonic and frequency-shifted tones). These measures were not significantly correlated with frequency selectivity (after partialing out the effect of audiometric threshold), suggesting that insensitivity to TFS cannot be wholly explained by a broaden

Auditory Brainstem Responses Predict Behavioral Deficits in Rats with Varying Levels of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss.

Intense noise exposure is a leading cause of hearing loss, which results in degraded speech sound discrimination ability, particularly in noisy environments. The development of an animal model of speech discrimination deficits due to noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) would enable testing of potential therapies to improve speech sound processing. Rats can accurately detect and discriminate human speech sounds in the presence of quiet and background noise. Further, it is known that profound hearing loss results in functional deafness in rats. In this study, we generated rats with a range of impa

Audiologic evaluation of patients with localized intracranial lesions.

A battery of audiological tests for retrocochlear disorders was performed of 79 cases with localized intracranial lesions confirmed surgically or neurologically. The Type III trace of Békésy audiometry was found to originate from pathologies in the brainstem and the Type IV from abnormalities in the first neuron of the VIIIth nerve or in the brainstem. It was suggested that an unusually large amplitude peak in the Békésy tracing indicates a lesion in the temporal lobe. Large values of differential limen for short increment (DLSI) were found in patients with brainstem lesions. A good speech dis

Review of the roles of temporal and place coding of frequency in speech discrimination.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that the frequency spectrum of sounds is represented in the neural code of single auditory nerve fibres both spatially and temporally, but few experiments have been designed to test which of these two representations of frequency is used in the discrimination of complex sounds such as speech and music. This paper reviews the roles of place and temporal coding of frequency in the nervous system as a basis for frequency discrimination of complex sounds such as those in speech. Animal studies based on frequency analysis in the cochlea have shown that the place c

Retraction cholesteatoma of the sinus tympani.

Posteromedial retraction of the tympanic membrane, between the oval window superiorly and the round window niche inferiorly, results in the formation of an epithelium-lined pocket within the sinus tympanic recess. Failure to recognize posterior invagination of the tympanic membrane intraoperatively leads to inadvertent tearing of the tympanomeatal flap at the level of the annulus with epithelial seeding of the middle ear and probably cholesteatoma recurrence. This article focuses on the clinical manifestations and radiographic findings suggestive of sinus tympanic epithelial retraction of the

Phonological therapy within a psycholinguistic framework: promoting change in a child with persisting speech difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Single case studies are a valuable means of providing information about the outcomes of speech and language intervention. Many previous studies have used phonological analysis as a theoretical basis, while others have used psycholinguistic models. The present study combines these approaches to assessment, intervention and evaluation of outcomes. AIMS: The aim of the research was to determine if intensive psycholinguistically based intervention could result in (a) specific and (b) generalized improvements in the speech production of a child with severe and persisting phonological d

The effects of tying the neurovascular bundle during palatoplasty.

Controversy rages in the literature over the possibility of denervation and atrophy of the palate that may occur secondary to severance of the greater palatine neurovascular bundles during palatoplasty. A pilot study was undertaken to assess palatal bulk, mobility, sensation, and mucous gland population, as well as speech, in a group of cleft palate patients, some of whom had severance of the bundles during their palatal repair and some who did not. These same parameters were tested in a group of patients who had juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromata, in whom one bundle was tied and the other

Factors accounting for the ability of children with SLI to learn agreement morphemes in intervention.

The aim of this study was to uncover factors accounting for the ability of children with specific language impairment (SLI) to learn agreement morphemes in intervention. Twenty-five children with SLI who participated in a six-month intervention program focused on teaching third person singular -s or auxiliary is/are/was showed a wide range of use of the target morpheme after intervention. Regression analyses showed that age and two factors expected to be related to agreement--the use of noun plural -s and subject/verb constructions prior to intervention--significantly predicted progress in the

Effects of different noises on speech discrimination by the elderly.

Elderly people often complain of difficulty in speech discrimination, especially in noise environments. The effects of 4 competing noises on sentence intelligibility were evaluated: speech noise, cocktail party noise, traffic noise and continuous discourse. A comparison was made between young and old normally hearing subjects and young and old hearing-impaired subjects with similar audiograms. The old people with normal hearing had slightly reduced discrimination compared to the young during competing speech noise and cocktail noise. Discrimination in the hearing-impaired elderly was also sign

Stapedotomy technique and results: ten years' experience and comparative study with stapedectomy.

Fifty of the 810 patients who underwent stapedotomy for otosclerosis from 1969 through 1988 were randomly chosen for follow-up of at least 5 years. Most of the patients (65%) had follow-up of 10 years after stapedotomy, but another 50 patients who underwent stapedectomy had follow-ups of longer than 10 years. In 50 patients, stapedectomy under local anesthesia was performed by removal of the footplate of the stapes, using an endaural incision, and covering the oval window with Gelfoam. In the other 50 patients, stapedotomy was performed under general anesthesia, using an endopreauricular incis

Selective hearing in the aged with regard to speech perception in quiet and in noise.

Most listening environments contain some noise which is mixed up with the speech. The effects of noise on speech perception depend on the parameters of the noise (long term spectrum, fluctuations of the intensity in time and average intensity relative to the intensity of speech) and on the speech material (sentences, monosyllables, CV-, CVC-, VC-syllables). The most effective at masking are noises with spectra similar to the speech spectrum, such as the speech simulating noise (CCITT-noise) or cocktail-party-noise. The cocktail-party situation is judged to be a difficult communication situatio

Perception and production of approximant consonants by normal and articulation-delayed preschool children.

Disagreement exists concerning the relationship between the perception of phonetic contrasts and their production by both normal and articulation-delayed children. The perception of three approximant consonant contrasts (/w/-/r/, /w/-/l/, /r/-/l/) was examined in two groups of 3-year-old children: normal children who did and did not articulate /r/ and /l/ correctly and articulation-delayed children who misarticulated /r/ and /l/. Perception was assessed in a two-choice forced-choice identification task in which the subjects heard a word and pushed a button lighting a picture corresponding to t

Normative Performance Functions for the Modified Connected Speech Test.

PURPOSE: The Connected Speech Test (CST) assesses an individual's ability to understand everyday contextualized running speech amidst competing background babble. To minimize accent effects on speech perception scores and reduce the noise floor of the original recordings, an updated version was developed by Saleh et al. (2020). The updated recordings feature a speaker with a General American accent to replace the Southern U.S. accent in the original test, and modern recording equipment was used to achieve a lower noise floor. The aim of this study was to collect normative data, characterizing

Speech perception skills of deaf infants following cochlear implantation: a first report.

OBJECTIVE: We adapted a behavioral procedure that has been used extensively with normal-hearing (NH) infants, the visual habituation (VH) procedure, to assess deaf infants' discrimination and attention to speech. METHODS: Twenty-four NH 6-month-olds, 24 NH 9-month-olds, and 16 deaf infants at various ages before and following cochlear implantation (CI) were tested in a sound booth on their caregiver's lap in front of a TV monitor. During the habituation phase, each infant was presented with a repeating speech sound (e.g. 'hop hop hop') paired with a visual display of a checkerboard pattern on

Effect of noise on word discrimination by subjects with impaired hearing, compared with those with normal hearing.

A comparison was made of the discrimination ability of different groups of hearing-impaired and normal-hearing subjects in noisy conditions. Four groups of subjects having a sensorineural hearing loss with various audiogram configurations, one group of subjects having a conductive hearing loss and one group of normal-hearing subjects were chosen. The submaster tapes were recorded in quiet and in pink noise with signal-to-noise ratios of -3, -8, and -13 dB. The test subjects heard the test words monaurally via earphones. The best speech discrimination was achieved in quiet, anechoic conditions.
