Effect of auditory feedback on speech intelligibility of adults with cochlear implants.

PURPOSE: Auditory feedback (AF) contributes to speech intelligibility (SI) which is vital in social interactions to examine AF effect on SI of adults with cochlear implant (CI). The relationship between age of CI implantation and AF on SI was examined as well. METHOD: Twenty native Hebrew speaker pre-lingual adults with a hearing loss using CIs from ages 2 to 19 years. Participants were recorded reading excerpts from a book and word lists from MIDBAR test in two situations-with and without using their CIs. Sixteen judges listened to the recordings and rated the speech characteristics of the p

The Formant Bandwidth as a Measure of Vowel Intelligibility in Dysphonic Speech.

OBJECTIVE: The current paper examined the impact of dysphonia on the bandwidth of the first two formants of vowels, and the relationship between the formant bandwidth and vowel intelligibility. METHODS: Speaker participants of the study were 10 adult females with healthy voice and 10 adult females with dysphonic voice. Eleven vowels in American English were recorded in /h/-vowel-/d/ format. The vowels were presented to 10 native speakers of American English with normal hearing, who were asked to select a vowel they heard from a list of /h/-vowel-/d/ words. The vowels were acoustically analyze

The intelligibility and comprehension of synthetic versus natural speech in dyslexic students.

Introduction-Purpose: Despite the growing amount of data on the 'synthetic speech perception' by people with no disabilities, there has been limited research on the intelligibility and comprehension of synthetic speech systems by dyslexics. This study investigated the intelligibility and comprehension of synthetic versus natural speech in Greek dyslexic students.Method: Forty three dyslexic students were presented with various acoustic stimuli (words, sentences, texts) both in synthetic and natural speech. Results: The data analysis has shown that dyslexic students had identified better words a

Intelligibility of naturally produced and synthesized Mandarin speech by cochlear implant listeners.

Mandarin is a tonal language, and it is important to preserve lexical tone information in synthesized speech. With natural speech, Chinese cochlear implant (CI) users have difficulty perceiving voice pitch cues important for lexical tone perception; it is unclear whether this difficulty persists in Mandarin synthesized speech. In this study, intelligibility of naturally produced and synthesized Mandarin speech was measured in Chinese CI listeners; intelligibility was also measured in a control group of normal-hearing (NH) listeners. Five synthesized voices were selected to represent different

The potential of onset enhancement for increased speech intelligibility in auditory prostheses.

Recent studies have shown that transient parts of a speech signal contribute most to speech intelligibility in normal-hearing listeners. In this study, the influence of enhancing the onsets of the envelope of the speech signal on speech intelligibility in noisy conditions using an eight channel cochlear implant vocoder simulation was investigated. The enhanced envelope (EE) strategy emphasizes the onsets of the speech envelope by deriving an additional peak signal at the onsets in each frequency band. A sentence recognition task in stationary speech shaped noise showed a significant speech rec

Effects of presentation mode and repeated familiarization on intelligibility of dysarthric speech.

Clinical measures of speech intelligibility are widely used as one means of characterizing the speech of individuals with dysarthria. Many variables associated with both the speaker and the listener contribute to what is actually measured as intelligibility. The present study explored the effects of presentation modality (audiovisual vs. audio-only information) and the effects of speaker-specific familiarization across 4 trials on the intelligibility of speakers with mild and severe dysarthria associated with cerebral palsy. Results revealed that audiovisual information did not enhance intelli

Influence of high pass filtering on the intelligibility of amplitude-compressed speech.

Monosyllabic triplet word intelligibility scores were obtained from normal-hearing and hearing-impaired, loudness-recruiting subjects under two experimental conditions: (1) high-pass (1200 Hz)-filtered, linear amplification, and (2) high-pass (1200 Hz)-filtered, compression amplification using input-to-output ratios of 5:1 and 20:1. Test materials were administered at increased sensation levels of 0, 10, 20, and 30 dB. In general, speech intelligibility was slightly enhanced for normal and hearing-impaired listeners, but only at lower sensation levels. Moreover, the improvement was observed on

Increased vowel contrast and intelligibility in connected speech induced by sensorimotor adaptation.

Alterations to sensory feedback can drive robust adaptive changes to the production of consonants and vowels, but these changes often have no behavioral relevance or benefit to communication (e.g., making "head" more like "had"). This work aims to align the outcomes of adaptation with changes known to increase speech intelligibility - specifically, adaptations that increase the acoustic contrast between vowels in running speech. To this end, we implemented a vowel centralization feedback perturbation paradigm that pushes all vowels towards the center of vowel space, making them sound less dist

Effects of noise exposure on intelligibility of bone-conducted speech during earplugging.

Bone conduction (BC) is a method of perceiving sound via living tissue. Some components of BC sound reach the middle or inner ear directly, so it can be heard even when wearing earplugs. Therefore, BC is used in speech communication devices in noisy environments that require wearing earplugs. However, the perception of BC sound under high-intensity noise is generally complicated by the temporal and frequency characteristics of the noises, the noise reduction rate of the earplugs, and the "occlusion effect," a phenomenon where the loudness of low-frequency bands increases due to wearing earplug

Delta-band neural envelope tracking predicts speech intelligibility in noise in preschoolers.

Behavioral tests are currently the gold standard in measuring speech intelligibility. However, these tests can be difficult to administer in young children due to factors such as motivation, linguistic knowledge and cognitive skills. It has been shown that measures of neural envelope tracking can be used to predict speech intelligibility and overcome these issues. However, its potential as an objective measure for speech intelligibility in noise remains to be investigated in preschool children. Here, we evaluated neural envelope tracking as a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in 14 5-yea

Effects of age and hearing loss on the intelligibility of interrupted speech.

How age and hearing loss affect the perception of interrupted speech may vary based on both the physical properties of preserved or obliterated speech fragments and individual listener characteristics. To investigate perceptual processes and interruption parameters influencing intelligibility across interruption rates, participants of different age and hearing status heard sentences interrupted by silence at either a single primary rate (0.5-8 Hz; 25%, 50%, 75% duty cycle) or at an additional concurrent secondary rate (24 Hz; 50% duty cycle). Although age and hearing loss significantly affecte

Production variability and single word intelligibility in aphasia and apraxia of speech.

UNLABELLED: This study was designed to estimate test-retest reliability of orthographic speech intelligibility testing in speakers with aphasia and AOS and to examine its relationship to the consistency of speaker and listener responses. Monosyllabic single word speech samples were recorded from 13 speakers with coexisting aphasia and AOS. These words were transcribed phonetically by two trained listeners and also presented to non-brain-damaged listeners for identification in a computerized speech intelligibility test. Overall intelligibility scores were computed for each speaker, and word-by-

Amplitude-mapping effects on speech intelligibility with unilateral and bilateral cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVE: A study was conducted examining the effects of amplitude-mapping adjustments on speech intelligibility with bilateral cochlear implant users, for both unilateral and bilateral device use. The main motivation for this study was the consideration that bilateral loudness summation may result in sounds becoming too loud if no adjustments are made to standard monaural amplitude-mapping functions (maps) when used bilaterally. In that case, reductions of the stimulation levels may be needed. The objective was to assess the impact of such adjustments on speech intelligibility in noise and i

Automated Assessment of Word- and Sentence-Level Speech Intelligibility in Developmental Motor Speech Disorders: A Cross-Linguistic Investigation.

Background/Objectives: Accurate assessment of speech intelligibility is necessary for individuals with motor speech disorders. Transcription or scaled rating methods by naïve listeners are the most reliable tasks for these purposes; however, they are often resource-intensive and time-consuming within clinical contexts. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, which transcribe speech into text, have been increasingly utilized for assessing speech intelligibility. This study investigates the feasibility of using an open-source ASR system to assess speech intelligibility in Hebrew and English
