Functioning of olivocochlear bundle and speech perception in noise.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of contralateral acoustic stimuli on speech identification scores and to correlate this effect to contralateral suppression of evoked otoacoustic emission. DESIGN: Ten normal-hearing children with good academic performance participated in the study. Speech identification scores were measured in quiet and with different ipsilateral signal to noise ratios in two conditions, with and without contralateral acoustic stimuli. Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions were recorded for 70 dB SPL clicks with and without contralateral acoustic stimuli. RESULTS: Finding

Evaluation of the speech perception in noise (SPIN) test.

Several investigations were perfomed with normal hearing subjects to determine the effects of presentation level and signal-to-babble ratio on the speech perception in noise (SPIN) test. The SPIN test contains sentences that simulate a range of contextual situations encountered in everyday speech communication. Findings from several representative patients with sensorineural hearing loss demonstrate the possible clinical utility of the test to measure the effects of context on speech discrimination.

Early Emergence of Cultural Differences in Audiovisual Speech Perception.

Integrating auditory and visual cues is a hallmark of human speech perception, yet adults from East Asian backgrounds show less reliance on visual speech than their Western counterparts. The origins of this cultural difference, however, remain unknown. To investigate whether this divergence is established early in infancy, we examined audiovisual integration in 6- to 12-month-old White Canadian (n = 111) and Chinese (n = 115) infants using a novel paradigm measuring their perception of the McGurk effect. Across four experiments, we found a clear developmental divergence: Canadian infants showe

Quantifying the Impact of Auditory Deafferentation on Speech Perception.

The past decade has seen a wealth of research dedicated to determining which and how morphological changes in the auditory periphery contribute to people experiencing hearing difficulties in noise despite having clinically normal audiometric thresholds in quiet. Evidence from animal studies suggests that cochlear synaptopathy in the inner ear might lead to auditory nerve deafferentation, resulting in impoverished signal transmission to the brain. Here, we quantify the likely perceptual consequences of auditory deafferentation in humans via a physiologically inspired encoding-decoding model. Th

Sustained neural rhythms reveal endogenous oscillations supporting speech perception.

Rhythmic sensory or electrical stimulation will produce rhythmic brain responses. These rhythmic responses are often interpreted as endogenous neural oscillations aligned (or "entrained") to the stimulus rhythm. However, stimulus-aligned brain responses can also be explained as a sequence of evoked responses, which only appear regular due to the rhythmicity of the stimulus, without necessarily involving underlying neural oscillations. To distinguish evoked responses from true oscillatory activity, we tested whether rhythmic stimulation produces oscillatory responses which continue after the en

Tinnitus Does Not Interfere with Auditory and Speech Perception.

Tinnitus is a sound heard by 15% of the general population in the absence of any external sound. Because external sounds can sometimes mask tinnitus, tinnitus is assumed to affect the perception of external sounds, leading to hypotheses such as "tinnitus filling in the temporal gap" in animal models and "tinnitus inducing hearing difficulty" in human subjects. Here we compared performance in temporal, spectral, intensive, masking and speech-in-noise perception tasks between 45 human listeners with chronic tinnitus (18 females and 27 males with a range of ages and degrees of hearing loss) and 2

Linguistic effect on speech perception observed at the brainstem.

Linguistic experience affects speech perception from early infancy, as previously evidenced by behavioral and brain measures. Current research focuses on whether linguistic effects on speech perception can be observed at an earlier stage in the neural processing of speech (i.e., auditory brainstem). Brainstem responses reflect rapid, automatic, and preattentive encoding of sounds. Positive experiential effects have been reported by examining the frequency-following response (FFR) component of the complex auditory brainstem response (cABR) in response to sustained high-energy periodic portions

Speech perception in medico-legal assessment of hearing disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: Examination of Danish data for medico-legal compensations regarding hearing disabilities. The study purposes are: (1) to investigate whether discrimination scores (DSs) relate to patients' subjective experience of their hearing and communication ability (the latter referring to audio-visual perception), (2) to compare DSs from different discrimination tests (auditory/audio-visual perception and without/with noise), and (3) to relate different handicap measures in the scaling used for compensation purposes in Denmark. DESIGN: Data from a 15 year period (1999-2014) were collected and

[Speech perception in noise with and without FM technology].

BACKGROUND: In the presence of a (central) auditory processing disorder [(C)APD] central hearing processes are disturbed, leading to impaired speech perception in noise. Poor acoustics in educational institutions exacerbates the problem. In children affected by (C)APD this can result in impaired development of language, reading and writing acquisition as well as other skills. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 66 children aged 6-11 years completed the Oldenburg sentence test in noise (OlSa) with and without an FM system. Children with normal OlSa test results formed the control group (group 1)

Auditory and visual lexical neighborhoods in audiovisual speech perception.

Much evidence suggests that the mental lexicon is organized into auditory neighborhoods, with words that are phonologically similar belonging to the same neighborhood. In this investigation, we considered the existence of visual neighborhoods. When a receiver watches someone speak a word, a neighborhood of homophenes (ie, words that look alike on the face, such as pat and bat) is activated. The simultaneous activation of a word's auditory and visual neighborhoods may, in part, account for why individuals recognize speech better in an auditory-visual condition than what would be predicted by th

Social perception of speech in individuals with oropharyngeal reconstruction.

Oral cancer affects approximately 5% of the Canadian population every year. One option for treatment of oropharyngeal cancer includes resection of the diseased tissue with primary reconstruction of the defect using a microvascular free flap, followed by post-operative adjuvant radiation therapy. The aim of reconstructive surgery is to maintain functional speech and swallowing. While the literature provides support for the maintenance of speech intelligibility following reconstructive procedures, certain aspects of resonance may be altered when the palatal structures are involved. Little is kno

Orthography influences the perception of speech in alexic patients.

Interactive models of reading propose that phonological representations directly activate and/or constrain orthographic representations through feedback. These models also predict that spoken words should activate their orthographic forms. The effect of word orthography on auditory lexical access was investigated in two patients with alexia without agraphia. Several theories of alexia suggest that letter-by-letter reading results from impaired access to orthographic representations. Although alexics can often correctly identify orally spelled words and spell to dictation, it is unknown whether

Speech perception in children with specific reading difficulties (dyslexia).

Many experimental studies over the last two decades have suggested that groups of children who suffer significant delay in reading also show a weakness in phoneme discrimination and identification. In order to look further at the relation between type of reading deficit, auditory acuity, and speech discrimination, a group of 13 children with specific reading difficulty (SRD), 12 chronological-age controls, and 12 reading-age controls were tested on a battery of speech-perceptual, psychoacoustic, and reading tests. A sub-group of children with Specific Reading Difficulty (SRD) were poor at spee

Evaluation and integration of acoustic features in speech perception.

Identification of synthetic stop consonants as either /bae/, /pae/, /dae/, or /tae/ was examined in two experiments in which the stimuli varied independently on voice onset time (VOT), the consonantal second and third formant (F2-F3) transitions and, in experiment 2, the intensity of the aspiration noise during the VOT period. In both experiments, the patterns of the resulting identification probabilities were complex, but systematic, functions of each of the independent variables. Of most interest was the fact that the likelihood of identifying a stimulus to be /bae/ or /pae/, rather than /da

Poor Speech Perception Is Not a Core Deficit of Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Preliminary Findings.

PURPOSE: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is hypothesized to arise from deficits in speech motor planning and programming, but the influence of abnormal speech perception in CAS on these processes is debated. This study examined speech perception abilities among children with CAS with and without language impairment compared to those with language impairment, speech delay, and typically developing peers. METHOD: Speech perception was measured by discrimination of synthesized speech syllable continua that varied in frequency (/dɑ/-/ɡɑ/). Groups were classified by performance on speech and lan

Using visible speech to train perception and production of speech for individuals with hearing loss.

The main goal of this study was to implement a computer-animated talking head, Baldi, as a language tutor for speech perception and production for individuals with hearing loss. Baldi can speak slowly; illustrate articulation by making the skin transparent to reveal the tongue, teeth, and palate; and show supplementary articulatory features, such as vibration of the neck to show voicing and turbulent airflow to show frication. Seven students with hearing loss between the ages of 8 and 13 were trained for 6 hours across 21 weeks on 8 categories of segments (4 voiced vs. voiceless distinctions,

Effects of residual speech and auditory deprivation on speech perception of adult cochlear implant recipients.

OBJECTIVE: Possible predictive factors of cochlear implant (CI) outcomes have been extensively reported in literature for different user groups such as prelingual pediatric or postlingual adult users. However, there remains unexplained outcome variability among adult CI users; therefore, research concerning these patients continues and many different variables have been reported. This study aimed at evaluating the relationship between preoperative speech reception capacity, residual hearing, duration of deafness, age of implantation, and postoperative monosyllabic word recognition scores (WRSs

Can speech perception deficits cause phonological impairments? Evidence from short-term memory for ambiguous speech.

Poor performance on phonological tasks is characteristic of neurodevelopmental language disorders (dyslexia and/or developmental language disorder). Perceptual deficit accounts attribute phonological dysfunction to lower-level deficits in speech-sound processing. However, a causal pathway from speech perception to phonological performance has not been established. We assessed this relationship in typical adults by experimentally disrupting speech-sound discrimination in a phonological short-term memory (pSTM) task. We used an automated audio-morphing method (Rogers & Davis, 2017) to create amb
