An investigation of the effects of a speech-restructuring treatment for stuttering on the distribution of intervals of phonation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether stuttering reductions following the instatement phase of a speech-restructuring treatment for adults were accompanied by reductions in the frequency of short intervals of phonation (PIs). The study was prompted by the possibility that reductions in the frequency of short PIs is the mechanism underlying such reductions in stuttering. METHOD: The distribution of PIs was determined for seven adults who stutter, before and immediately after the intensive phase of a speech-restructuring treatment program. Audiovisual recordings of conve

Lip hyper-articulation in loud voice: Effect on resonance-harmonic proximity.

Men and women speakers were recorded while producing sustained vowels at comfortable and loud levels. Following comfortable speech, loud levels were produced in three different conditions: first without specific instruction (UL); then maintaining the same pitch as the comfortable level (PL); and finally, keeping both pitch and lip articulation constant (PAL). The sound pressure level, the fundamental frequency ( fo), the first two vocal tract resonances (R1 and R2), the lip geometry, and the larynx height were measured. For women, a closer proximity of R1 to its nearest harmonic, nfo, was obse

Interactions Between Breathy and Rough Voice Qualities and Their Contributions to Overall Dysphonia Severity.

PURPOSE: Dysphonic voices typically present multiple voice quality dimensions. This study investigated potential interactions between perceived breathiness and roughness and their contributions to overall dysphonia severity. METHOD: Synthetic stimuli based on four talkers were created to systematically map out potential interactions. For each talker, a stimulus matrix composed of 49 stimuli (seven breathiness steps × seven roughness steps) was created by varying aspiration noise and open quotient to manipulate breathiness and superimposing amplitude modulation of varying depths to simulate ro

Comparing global motor characteristics in children and adults with childhood apraxia of speech to a cerebellar stroke patient: evidence for the cerebellar hypothesis in a developmental motor speech disorder.

Individuals with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) have motor deficits in systems beyond speech and also global deficits in sequential processing, consistent with cerebellar dysfunction. We investigated the cerebellar hypothesis of CAS in 18 children and adolescents with CAS, 11 typical controls, an adult with a probable CAS history, and an adult with a history of a cerebellar stroke. Compared to the controls, children and adolescents with CAS had the greatest difficulty with rapid syllable repetition when alternating between two different syllables types, less difficulty when switching among

The effect of intensive speech rate and intonation therapy on intelligibility in Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Most studies on treatment of prosody in individuals with dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease are based on intensive treatment of loudness. The present study investigates the effect of intensive treatment of speech rate and intonation on the intelligibility of individuals with dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease. METHODS: A one group pretest-posttest design was used to compare intelligibility, speech rate, and intonation before and after treatment. Participants included eleven Dutch-speaking individuals with predominantly moderate dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease, who receive

[Evaluation of the results of treatment of patients with functional dysphonia using a cepstral test].

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment in patients with functional dysphonia, the Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPP) test was used. Twenty dysphonic women aged from 18 to 47 years were under observation. The control group consisted of 20 healthy women of close age. Patients underwent 5-7 sessions electrostimulation of laryngeal muscles and phonopedic treatment, after which a complete restoration of the voice was noted. The Praat clinical program was used, installed on a Hewlett-Packard 630 laptop (Pentium B960, 2.2 GHz). A SHURE SM94 condenser microphone was used as well. In the c

The Effect of Microphone Frequency Response on Spectral and Cepstral Measures of Voice: An Examination of Low-Cost Electret Headset Microphones.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to establish the frequency response of a selection of low-cost headset microphones that could be given to subjects for remote voice recordings and to examine the effect of microphone type and frequency response on key acoustic measures related to voice quality obtained from speech and vowel samples. METHOD: The frequency responses of three low-cost headset microphones were evaluated using pink noise generated via a head-and-torso model. Each of the headset microphones was then used to record a series of speech and vowel samples prerecorded from 24 speake

Quantifying changes in ultrasound tongue-shape pre- and post-intervention in speakers with submucous cleft palate: an illustrative case study.

Ultrasound Tongue Imaging is increasingly used during assessment and treatment of speech sound disorders. Recent literature has shown that ultrasound is also useful for the quantitative analysis of a wide range of speech errors. So far, the compensatory articulations of speakers with cleft palate have only been analysed qualitatively. This study provides a pilot quantitative ultrasound analysis, drawing on longitudinal intervention data from a child with submucous cleft palate. Two key ultrasound metrics were used: 1. articulatory t-tests were used to compare tongue-shapes for perceptually col

[A study of the phenomenon of voice intonation: analysis, usage and diagnosis].

The aim of this work was to study the average rise time (RT) and average flow rate (MRT) in utterance. Data were collected from 48 singers and 44 patients. The group of patients included cases of modulus vocale, polypus laryngis, paresis bilateralis, hemiparesis, and CA laryngis. Various characteristics of utterance were recorded synchronously: the frequency and intensity of the fundamental laryngeal tone were measured with a laryngophone, a microphone was used to monitor acoustic radiation from the mouth, and a pneumotrachometer was applied for the measurement of flow rate. The data were stor

Reduction of vowel space in Alzheimer's disease.

Reduced vowel space area (VSA) is a known effect of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Using large publicly available corpuses, two experiments were conducted comparing the vowel space of speakers with and without Alzheimer's disease (AD) during spontaneous and read speech. First, a comparison of vowel distance found reduced distance in AD for English spontaneous speech, but not Spanish read speech. Findings were then verified using an unsupervised learning approach to quantify VSA through cluster center detection. These results corroborate observations for PD that VS

Speech timing and monosyllabic diadochokinesis measures in the assessment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Canadian French.

PURPOSE: The primary objective of this study was to determine if speech and pause measures obtained using a passage reading task and timing measures from a monosyllabic diadochokinesis (DDK) task differ across speakers of Canadian French diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) presenting with and without bulbar symptoms, and healthy controls. The secondary objective was to determine if these measures can reflect the severity of bulbar symptoms. METHOD: A total of 29 Canadian French speakers with ALS (classified as bulbar symptomatic [n = 14] or pre-symptomatic [n = 15]) and 17 age-

Machine Learning-Based Scoring System to Predict the Risk and Severity of Ataxic Speech Using Different Speech Tasks.

The assessment of speech in Cerebellar Ataxia (CA) is time-consuming and requires clinical interpretation. In this study, we introduce a fully automated objective algorithm that uses significant acoustic features from time, spectral, cepstral, and non-linear dynamics present in microphone data obtained from different repeated Consonant-Vowel (C-V) syllable paradigms. The algorithm builds machine-learning models to support a 3-tier diagnostic categorisation for distinguishing Ataxic Speech from healthy speech, rating the severity of Ataxic Speech, and nomogram-based supporting scoring charts fo

An Experimental Analysis on Multicepstral Projection Representation Strategies for Dysphonia Detection.

Biometrics-based authentication has become the most well-established form of user recognition in systems that demand a certain level of security. For example, the most commonplace social activities stand out, such as access to the work environment or to one's own bank account. Among all biometrics, voice receives special attention due to factors such as ease of collection, the low cost of reading devices, and the high quantity of literature and software packages available for use. However, these biometrics may have the ability to represent the individual impaired by the phenomenon known as dys
