Unreported catches, impact of whaling and current status of blue whales in the South European Atlantic Shelf.

The North Atlantic blue whale was depleted by modern whaling and it is still considered to be highly endangered. Despite its protection in 1954, catches continued in the South European Atlantic Shelf (SEAS) region and immediately adjacent waters until 1979. We compiled catches and investigate abundance trends in the region using original data from whaling (1921-1985) and scientific surveys around the last years of exploitation (1981-1987). The struck and lost rate was estimated at 3.2% for sperm whales and 2.3% for baleen whales. The compiled records include 60 catches, with an additional 1-2

How is the third jaw joint in whales different? Diverse modes of articulation between the jaws of whales.

Cetaceans are a lineage of marine mammals that evolved diverse modes of aquatic feeding facilitated by modifications to the ancestral mammalian feeding apparatus, including the mandibular symphysis. In mammals, the mandibular symphysis is the third joint of the lower jaw. Articulation of the joint varies across mammalian clades, ranging from fibrocartilaginous connection to complete ossification. Whales span this range, with one lineage (baleen whales) evolving an unfused, highly mobile symphysis. This study conducts a comprehensive morphological investigation of the mandibular symphysis in wh

Molecular identification of novel alpha- and gammaherpesviruses from cetaceans stranded on Japanese coasts.

Herpesviral infections have been documented in some cetaceans; however, they have not yet been identified in species in the western North Pacific. In the present study, 178 tissue samples from 76 stranded cetacean individuals were tested for the presence of herpesviruses. Herpesvirus genomic DNA fragments surrounding the DNA polymerase gene were amplified in samples from four individuals. TA cloning and direct sequencing of these DNA fragments revealed the presence of two novel alphaherpesviruses, and two novel gammaherpesviruses in the four cetacean individuals. The alphaherpesviruses were as

Contributions of residue 45(CD3) and heme-6-propionate to the biomolecular and geminate recombination reactions of myoglobin.

Overall association and dissociation rate constants were measured at 20 degrees C for O2, CO, and alkyl isocyanide binding to position 45 (CD3) mutants of pig and sperm whale myoglobins and to sperm whale myoglobin reconstituted with protoheme IX dimethyl ester. In pig myoglobin, Lys45(CD3) was replaced with Arg, His, Ser, and Glu; in sperm whale myoglobin, Arg45(CD3) was replaced with Ser and Gly. Intramolecular rebinding of NO, O2, and methyl isocyanide to Arg45, Ser45, Glu45, and Lys45(native) pig myoglobins was measured following 35-ps and 17-ns excitation pulses. The shorter, picosecond l

When the small ones tease the largest: Microplastic and phthalate ester occurrence in cetaceans occasionally found in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.

Living in potentially burdened waters and prey on loaded species, marine mammals are sentinels for microplastic (MP) pollution. Here, seven different species of cetaceans were investigated covering baleen (Mysticeti) and toothed (Odontoceti) whales stranded along the German coast between 2016 and 2021. Intestinal and faecal samples of 12 sperm whales, three minke whales, two dolphin species, one long-finned pilot whale, one fin whale and one neonate orca were analysed. The concentrations of 11 phthalates were assessed in blubber and muscle samples. MPs were detected with Nile Red staining, pol

Determination of the chirality of the saturated pyrrole in sulfmyoglobin using the nuclear Overhauser effect.

The interproton nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) and paramagnetic dipolar relaxation rates for hyperfine-shifted resonances in the proton NMR spectra of sperm whale met-cyano sulfmyoglobin have led to the location and assignment of the proton signals of the heme pocket residue isoleucine 99 (FG5) in two sulfmyoglobin isomers. Dipolar relaxation rates of these protein signals indicate a highly conserved geometry of the heme pocket upon sulfmyoglobin formation, while the similar upfield direction of dipolar shifts for this residue to that observed in native sperm whale myoglobin reflects largely

Anatomical and Volumetric Description of the Baird's Beaked Whale (Berardius bairdii) Brain from Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Baird's beaked whale, a member of the family Ziphiidae, is one of the largest odontocetes, second only to the sperm whale in body mass. The species is known for its exceptional diving abilities, but this behavior makes it difficult to observe in its natural habitat and has contributed to major gaps in our understanding of its biology, including its neuroanatomy. This study provides a detailed anatomical and quantitative description of the Baird's beaked whale brain. METHODS: The brain was examined using magnetic resonance imaging. External and internal neuroanatomical features w

Isocyanide binding kinetics to monomeric hemoproteins. A study on the ligand partition between solvent and heme pocket.

The kinetics of methyl-, ethyl-, iso-propyl-, and ter-butyl-isocyanide binding to Aplysia limacina myoglobin (distal His----Lys) and the isolated beta chains from hemoglobin Zurich (distal His----Arg) have been investigated by flash photolysis at various temperatures above 0 degrees C. Sperm whale (Physter catodon) myoglobin and the isolated beta chains from normal adult hemoglobin have been used as references. In most reaction systems investigated the apparent extent of photolysis increases with temperature. For sperm whale myoglobin and the normal beta chains the increase is of the same magn

Tuberculosis in Greece: bacteriologically confirmed cases and anti-tuberculosis drug resistance, 1995-2009.

For a deep-diving cetacean species like the sperm whale, acoustics is a vital tool for research. This need is especially pressing in the eastern Caribbean, where the habitat of marine mammals overlaps with heavy maritime traffic, leading to noise pollution and an increased risk of vessel collisions. To mitigate this risk, understanding their habitat use is essential. Mature males are generally solitary and migrate over long distances, while females and immatures form stable social units in subtropical and tropical waters. In this study, we examined intraspecific variation in distribution and h

The Caprera Canyon (north-eastern Sardinia): A hotspot of cetacean diversity in the western Mediterranean Sea.

The Caprera Canyon, a submarine canyon system off Sardinia in the western Mediterranean, was thought to be an important cetacean habitat, though studies on the area remained limited. To address this knowledge gap, 216 boat-based surveys were conducted between 2011 and 2019, covering 8443 km, using both research and whale-watching vessels. The distribution, diversity, relative abundance (Encounter Rate - ER), and habitat use of cetaceans were described, along with relevant behavioural and ecological observations. A total of 8 species were reported across 810 sightings, encompassing 7 out of the

Comparative analysis of the genetic structures of Kogia spp. populations in the western North Pacific.

The two Kogia species, the pygmy sperm whale (K. breviceps) and the dwarf sperm whale (K. sima), have similar morphological and biological features as well as diets. Both species are deep divers, and both have wide distributions from tropical to warm-temperate zones. Although K. breviceps is larger than K. sima, there are few reports of habitat differentiation between the two species. The distribution of K. breviceps is concentrated in higher-latitudes, and this species dives deeper than K. sima. We investigated whether these two species differ in their population structures in the western Nor

Chemical analysis of flotsam ambergris.

The natural product ambergris is only found rarely on beaches, as jetsam. Even more scarce, or even absent, are accounts of flotsam ambergris. Here, we report the chemical analysis of a rare, large piece (>100kg) of flotsam found in the Atlantic in 2019. About 95% of subsamples from the outside of the coprolith was soluble in dichloromethane. Of this, FTIR spectroscopy, APCI-MS and GC-MS indicated the presence of ambrein. Radiocarbon dating indicated that the sample was post 1950s in age. The 13C/12C isotope ratio (-22.5 ‰) was typical of those reported to date for whale 'body' ambergris. Meta

Nailfold capillaroscopy in Sjögren's syndrome: a systematic literature review and standardised interpretation.

Visual line transect (VLT) surveys are central to the monitoring and study of marine mammals. However, for cryptic species such as deep diving cetaceans VLT surveys alone suffer from problems of low sample sizes and availability bias where animals below the surface are not available to be detected. The advent of passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) technology offers important opportunities to observe deep diving cetaceans but statistical challenges remain particularly when trying to integrate VLT and PAM data. Herein, we present a general framework to combine these data streams to estimate abunda

Redesigning myoglobin via functional site scaffolding for enhanced catalytic functions.

Protein redesign is frequently limited by the scarcity of stable and robust scaffolds. While computational methods can expand protein sequence space to generate novel scaffolds, reproducing the fine structural features essential for the function of metalloproteins like myoglobin remains challenging. In this work, we employed deep learning-based functional site scaffolding strategy, in which backbone architectures were generated using a diffusion-based structural model, sequences were optimized through inverse-folding design (ProteinMPNN), and structural consistency was subsequently evaluated u

Retrospective Study of Traumatic Intra-Interspecific Interactions in Stranded Cetaceans, Canary Islands.

Aggressive encounters involving cetacean species are widely described in the literature. However, detailed pathological studies regarding lesions produced by these encounters are scarce. From January 2000 to December 2017, 540 cetaceans stranded and were necropsied in the Canary Islands, Spain. Of them, 24 cases of eight species presented social traumatic lesions produced by cetaceans of the same or different species. All the cases presented severe multifocal vascular changes, 50% (12/24) presented fractures affecting mainly the thoracic region, 41.7% (10/24) acute tooth-rake marks, 37.5% (9/2

An open-source bio-logger for studying cetacean behavior and communication.

Over the past decade, bioacoustics associated with diverse marine life has become the focus of increasing research. While fixed acoustic devices play important roles in characterizing localized soundscapes, animal-worn devices that record audio alongside physiological metrics provide richer portals to understanding cetacean communication and characterizing sounds in their environment. To facilitate scaling the collection of such multimodal datasets for deep learning applications and to encourage rapid prototyping for new recording capabilities, we present an open-source non-invasive bio-logger

Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia sp. in aquatic mammals in northern and northeastern Brazil.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are protozoans that can infect humans and wild and domestic animals. Due to the growing importance of diseases caused by protozoan parasites in aquatic species, we aimed to evaluate the frequency of infection by Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia sp. in aquatic and marine mammals in the northern and northeastern regions of Brazil. We collected 553 fecal samples from 15 species of wild-ranging and captive aquatic mammals in northern and northeastern Brazil. All samples were analyzed by the Kinyoun technique for identification of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts. Giardia sp

Dissecting NO Association and Dissociation Dynamics of Myoglobin, Hemoglobin, and Heme-Model Compounds.

Nitric oxide (NO) binding to heme-proteins is a physiologically relevant molecular process, contributing to regulate blood pressure and flow to provide an adequate O2 supply to all body compartments. This appears to be relevant for energy-demanding tissues, characterized by high O2-consuming rates, such as the eye's retina and striated muscles under physical effort. The reaction of NO with the ferrous heme-Fe atom (heme-Fe(II)) is characterized by very fast association rate constants and very slow dissociation kinetics, which drastically differ from those observed for other gaseous ligands, su

Inactivation of the olfactory marker protein (OMP) gene in river dolphins and other odontocete cetaceans.

Various toothed whales (Odontoceti) are unique among mammals in lacking olfactory bulbs as adults and are thought to be anosmic (lacking the olfactory sense). At the molecular level, toothed whales have high percentages of pseudogenic olfactory receptor genes, but species that have been investigated to date retain an intact copy of the olfactory marker protein gene (OMP), which is highly expressed in olfactory receptor neurons and may regulate the temporal resolution of olfactory responses. One hypothesis for the retention of intact OMP in diverse odontocete lineages is that this gene is pleio

Anomalously slow cyanide binding to Glycera dibranchiata monomer methemoglobin component II: implication for the equilibrium constant.

In comparison to sperm whale metmyoglobin, metleghemoglobin a, methemoglobins, and heme peroxidases, the purified Glycera dibranchiata monomer methemoglobin component II exhibits anomalously slow cyanide ligation kinetics. For the component II monomer methemoglobin this reaction has been studied under pseudo-first-order conditions at pH 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0, employing 100-250-fold mole excesses of potassium cyanide at each pH. At 20 degrees C, with micromolar protein concentrations, kobsd varies between 9.11 x 10(-5) s-1 at pH 6.0, 100-fold KCN mole excess, and 1.12 x 10(-2) s-1 at pH 9.0, 2
