Innovative use of depth data to estimate energy intake and expenditure in Adélie penguins.

Energy governs species' life histories and pace of living, requiring individuals to make trade-offs. However, measuring energetic parameters in the wild is challenging, often resulting in data collected from heterogeneous sources. This complicates comprehensive analysis and hampers transferability within and across case studies. We present a novel framework, combining information obtained from eco-physiology and biologging techniques, to estimate both energy expenditure and intake in 48 Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) during the chick-rearing stage. We employed the machine learning algori

Total mercury and methylmercury levels in blood of Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) from the Antarctic Peninsula area.

Antarctica is one of the most remote regions on the planet, where many species of penguins inhabit. One of these species is the Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae), which occupies a high trophic level. Blood is an important indicator of short-term exposure to mercury (Hg) in avian species, however there are few publications investigating methylmercury (MeHg) in Antarctic penguin blood. During the austral summer of 2016, thirty adult specimens of Adélie penguins were captured at three locations of the King George Island and the north-west Antarctic Peninsula. This study determined by atomic flu

Postmortem findings in Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) caught in a drift gillnet.

BACKGROUND: Penguin interaction with gillnets has been extensively reported in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and is considered a major conservation threat. Among penguin species, Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) are currently considered of great concern, particularly in Brazil, where they are highly susceptible to gillnet bycatch. Nevertheless, information about drowning-associated microscopic findings in penguins is limited. RESULTS: We describe the anatomopathological findings of 20 Magellanic penguins that drowned after getting entangled in a drift gillnet while wintering a

Occurrence of tissue cyst forming coccidia in Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) rescued on the coast of Brazil.

The main motivation for this study was to determine the occurrence of Toxoplasma gondii, a cosmopolitan widespread zoonotic parasite distribution that can infect a wide variety of mammals and birds, in Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) in Brazil. In recent decades there has been a significant increase in the number of penguins originating from Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia, where these birds are born, that arrive on the Brazilian coast, where many of them are stranded and rescued. Tissue samples were collected from 330 individuals surveyed from 2012-2015 at the Institute for Ma

DIPHTHERITIC STOMATITIS IN YELLOW-EYED PENGUINS (MEGADYPTES ANTIPODES) IN NEW ZEALAND.

Diphtheritic stomatitis is a seasonal disease that has been recognized as a syndrome in Yellow-eyed Penguin ( Megadyptes antipodes ) chicks in New Zealand for >10 yr. It was present in about 50% of 234 chicks examined since 2002 and is characterized by a thick serocellular exudate in the oral cavity of 1-4-wk-old chicks. The syndrome includes inanition, weight loss, and death in many affected birds. Microscopically, the lesions varied in severity. Most affected chicks had severe, locally extensive, ulcerative stomatitis with large amounts of exudate containing numerous bacteria; a smaller numb

Reproductive physiology of the female Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus): Insights from the study of a zoological colony.

Eight captive female Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) were monitored over a 10week period, commencing at 5weeks prior to egg lay (EL), to increase our understanding of the species' reproductive biology. Females in cordoned nest sites underwent cloacal artificial insemination (AI) every 4-7days with different semen donors for each insemination. The EL interval was 97.9±3.6h (range: 84-108h) and paternity analyses revealed that conceptive inseminations occurred from 11.5 to 4.5days before oviposition. A biphasic pattern of estradiol, testosterone, progesterone and the biochemical an

Hand-rearing, release and survival of African penguin chicks abandoned before independence by moulting parents.

The African penguin Spheniscus demersus has an 'Endangered' conservation status and a decreasing population. Following abandonment, 841 African penguin chicks in 2006 and 481 in 2007 were admitted to SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) for hand-rearing from colonies in the Western Cape, South Africa, after large numbers of breeding adults commenced moult with chicks still in the nest. Of those admitted, 91% and 73% respectively were released into the wild. There were veterinary concerns about avian malaria, airsacculitis and pneumonia, feather-loss and p

Reversed hatching order, body condition and corticosterone levels in chicks of southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome).

In altricial and semi-altricial species, asynchronous hatching gives the first chicks to hatch an initial advantage over other siblings and often leads to the elimination of the smallest chicks. Both baseline corticosterone and acute stress-induced corticosterone levels have been shown to be higher in food deprived chicks than in chicks fed ad libitum. However, first-hatched chicks have also been shown to exhibit higher corticosterone levels than last-hatched chicks, suggesting an influence of the initial differences between eggs on corticosterone levels. We subjected single-chicks of southern

RADIOGRAPHIC EVALUATION OF CARDIAC SILHOUETTE IN CLINICALLY HEALTHY HUMBOLDT PENGUINS ( SPHENISCUS HUMBOLDTI).

Wild populations of Humboldt penguins ( Spheniscus humboldti) on the coasts of Chile and Peru have been declining because of food scarcity caused by the El Niño Southern Oscillation and human interference. Part of conserving this vulnerable and threatened species is maintaining the health of penguins within zoo collections. A variety of cardiovascular diseases has been reported in individuals from the Spheniscidae family including ventricular septal defects, Dirofilaria immitis infection, pulmonary hypertension, and valvular dysplasia, ultimately resulting in congestive heart failure. An accur

The rise and fall of the CR1 subfamily in the lineage leading to penguins.

The evolution of penguins has been investigated extensively, although inconclusively, by morphologists, biogeographers and molecular phylogeneticists. We investigated this issue using retroposon analysis of insertions of CR1, which is a member of the LINE (long interspersed element) family, in the genomes of penguins and penguin relatives. The retroposon method is a powerful tool for identifying monophyletic groups. Because retroposons often show different relative frequencies of retroposition during evolution, it is first necessary to identify a certain subgroup that was specifically active d

EVALUATION OF THE OCULAR PARAMETERS AND LESIONS IN A FLOCK OF AQUARIUM-HOUSED AFRICAN BLACK-FOOTED PENGUINS (SPHENISCUS DEMERSUS).

African black-footed penguins (Spheniscus demersus) are one of the most common penguin species exhibited in zoos and aquariums. Ophthalmic literature published in this species is limited to intraocular pressure (IOP) and corneal thickness. The objective of this research was to evaluate IOP (rebound tonometry; dog setting), tear production, corneal fluorescein staining, and ocular lesions from 48 eyes of 24 penguins (aged 4.29-29.58 yr) at Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies. Statistical analysis revealed that tear production (12.68 ± 4.59 mm/min [mean ± SD], with a modified half strip in 25 eyes)

Multi-modal survey of Adélie penguin mega-colonies reveals the Danger Islands as a seabird hotspot.

Despite concerted international effort to track and interpret shifts in the abundance and distribution of Adélie penguins, large populations continue to be identified. Here we report on a major hotspot of Adélie penguin abundance identified in the Danger Islands off the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula (AP). We present the first complete census of Pygoscelis spp. penguins in the Danger Islands, estimated from a multi-modal survey consisting of direct ground counts and computer-automated counts of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery. Our survey reveals that the Danger Islands host 751,

Diagnosis of Retrobulbar Round Cell Neoplasia in a Macaroni Penguin ( Eudyptes chrysolophus ) Through Use of Computed Tomography.

A 25-year-old female macaroni penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) was diagnosed with exophthalmos secondary to retrobulbar neoplasia through use of computed tomography (CT). Histopathologic examination of the mass supported a diagnosis of malignant round cell neoplasia. Immunohistochemical (IHC) labeling was applied to determine cell origin; the neoplastic cells did not label with T-cell marker CD3 or B-cell marker BLA.36 and could not be further characterized. The scleral ossicles precluded evaluation of the retrobulbar space by ultrasonography; therefore, CT scanning is recommended for examinati

Ecological correlates of microfilariae prevalence in endangered Galápagos birds.

This study assesses the ecological factors associated with microfilariae prevalence in wild populations of endangered flightless cormorants (Phalacrocorax harrisi) and Galápagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus). Prevalence values were tested for correlation with a large number of environmental variables, as modeled from weather station data and measured by satellite-borne sensors. Predictions were made based on the expected effects of climatic and landscape variables on sustained populations of arthropod vectors required for transmission of microfilariae. In general, findings were consistent w

Identification of Plasmodium relictum causing mortality in penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) from São Paulo Zoo, Brazil.

This study reports avian malaria caused by Plasmodium relictum in Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) from São Paulo Zoo. The disease was highly infective among the birds and was clinically characterized by its acute course and high mortality. The penguins of São Paulo Zoo were housed for at least 2 years without malaria; however, they had always been maintained in an enclosure protected from mosquito exposure during the night period. When they presented pododermatitis, they were freed at night for a short period. São Paulo Zoo is located in one of the last forest remnants of the cit

Concurrent fibrinogen Aα-chain amyloidosis and AA amyloidosis in a Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti).

Amyloidosis is a disease characterized by the deposition of abnormally folded proteins as amyloid fibrils in tissues and occurs in various mammals and birds. In some cases, amyloids derived from two different precursor proteins may coexist in the same individual, a condition known as double amyloidosis. Amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis is known to occur frequently in birds; however, little is known about other types of amyloidosis. In the present study, we report a case of amyloidosis in a Humboldt penguin involving two distinct types of amyloids. Histopathological examination, transmission electron

Breeding phenology plasticity to climate revealed by automated monitoring of two Eudpytes penguin species across the sub-Antarctic.

The timing of breeding is a key component of a species' realised niche and has been shown to be flexible to environmental change. Using a network of time-lapse cameras around Patagonia and the sub-Antarctic, along with citizen science assisted AI data extraction, we demonstrate that semi-automated extraction of phenological parameters is feasible without extensive human presence at colonies. Our comparative analysis of two related penguin species across the Polar Front reveals shifts in breeding phenology linked to environmental variation. The Southern Rockhopper Penguin showed a potential con
