Withdrawal phenomena and dependence syndrome after the consumption of "spice gold".

BACKGROUND: "Spice" and other herbal blends were marketed in Germany until January 2009 as substances purportedly exerting similar effects to cannabis, yet containing no cannabinoids. These products were recently forbidden in Germany under the provisions of the German Narcotics Law after they were found to contain undeclared, synthetic cannabinomimetic substances. The authors describe physical withdrawal phenomena and a dependence syndrome that developed after the consumption of "Spice." CASE PRESENTATION AND COURSE: A 20-year old patient reported that he had smoked "Spice Gold" daily for 8 m

Identification of natural spices based on high-resolution mass spectrometry using omics methods.

In this study, 25 spices were identified and analyzed by E-nose, GC-MS and UPLC-MS. 12 spices had similar E-nose response profiles, but different response intensities. The characteristic volatiles were detected in 21 spices by GC-MS. Some spices have the same characteristic volatiles, but there are significant differences in content. For example, estragole was detected in fennel and star anise; cinnamaldehyde was detected in cassia and cinnamon; elemene was detected in white pepper and black pepper. A repertoire of 924 small-molecule compounds were identified in 25 spices by non-targeted metab

Antioxidation Performance of Essential Oils of Herbs and Spices in White Mineral Oils.

White mineral oil (paraffin oil) is a colorless, tasteless and hydrophobic oil used in many different industries. The oil is prone to oxidation, which negatively affects its properties and performance. In this study, six different essential oils obtained from herbs and spices (Sage, Laurel, Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano) were added to pharmaceutical and technical grade white mineral oils at 0.1 - 0.8 % (w/w) concentrations. Light, heat and air were applied to induce and accelerate oxidation. The total acid number, viscosity, and DPPH radical scavenging activity of the oils were measured in a

SPICES: Disclosure Practices to Help Caregivers Digest a Diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Recent studies of the experiences of caregivers of children with language disorders have suggested that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are not clearly and effectively providing caregivers with a comprehensible diagnostic term for their child's difficulties. Since the work of the CATALISE consortium, there has been a mounting consensus around the use of the term developmental language disorder (DLD) to identify primary, persistent language problems beginning in childhood. Thanks to the increasing unification of SLPs around the term DLD, the time is ripe to directly address clinica

Anti-carcinogenic and Anti-bacterial Properties of Selected Spices: Implications in Oral Health.

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food", as said by the father of medicine, Hippocrates in 431 B.C. Nature has provided us with a variety of treatment modalities in the form of food. For the first 5,000 years of civilization, humans relied on herbs and foods for medicine. Only in the past 60 years have we forgotten our medicinal "roots" in favor of patented medicines. While pharmaceutical ingredients have their value, we should not overlook the well-documented, non-toxic and inexpensive healing properties of food. As an individual we consume food several times a day without a compl

Tripping with Synthetic Cannabinoids ("Spice"): Anecdotal and Experimental Observations in Animals and Man.

The phenomenon of consuming synthetic cannabinoids ("Spice") for recreational purposes is a fairly recent trend. However, consumption of cannabis dates back millennia, with numerous accounts written on the experience of its consumption, and thousands of scientific reports published on the effects of its constituents in laboratory animals and humans. Here, we focus on consolidating the scientific literature on the effects of "Spice" compounds in various behavioral assays, including assessing abuse liability, tolerance, dependence, withdrawal, and potential toxicity. In most cases, the behaviora

Adding Spice to the Porridge: The development of a synthetic cannabinoid market in an English prison.

BACKGROUND: In 2014, the annual report of the Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons (HMIP) for England and Wales raised concerns regarding New Psychoactive Substance (NPS) use in custody, specifically the consumption of synthetic cannabinoids. To date, however, the use of these substances in prison populations, and the markets that have emerged to facilitate it, have been under-researched. METHODS: Our research was conducted in an English adult male prison using multi-method techniques. These included: in-depth interviews and focus groups with prison staff and prisoners; observations of pr

[Food allergy: the celery-mugwort-spice syndrome. Association with mango allergy?].

Celery allergies are commonly observed in mugwort pollen-allergic patients. This situation is frequently associated with an allergy to spices of the umbelliferous family. Thus a "celery-mugwort-spice syndrome" has been established. In 31 patients (27 females, 4 males) allergy to celery was diagnosed between 1978 and 1982. They were followed up in 1983 and complementary tests (skin and RAST) with various raw vegetables, spices and mugwort pollen were done. For specific diagnosis of allergy to celery skin testing (scratch or prick) with fresh celery bulb was reliable. In contrast, RAST was not s

Antimicrobial Effect of Spices and Their Phytochemicals: A Novel Approach to Overcoming Antibiotic Resistance.

Antibiotic resistance is a significant global health challenge that demands innovative strategies to combat resistant pathogens. Spices, known for their culinary and medicinal qualities, have emerged as promising sources of antimicrobial agents due to their rich content of potent bioactive phytochemicals. Compounds such as flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, and terpenoids exhibit strong antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activities. These phytochemicals target microbial cell walls, membranes, and metabolic processes, effectively inhibiting pathogen growth and survival. Additionally, their

Cumin anaphylaxis and allergy to spices in pediatrics: a case report and literature review.

While spice allergies are rarely documented in children, spices are becoming an increasingly common allergen in pre-packaged foods. Current literature reports contradictory findings regarding the risk of severe reactions in pediatric patients, with some evidence suggesting that small amounts of spices usually used in home-cooked meals may be safe for children. However, allergens, such as spices, are increasingly used in the food industry, coupled with diverse culinary habits and customs, necessitates a re-evaluation of this risk. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of cumin

Intake of Dietary Salicylates from Herbs and Spices among Adult Polish Omnivores and Vegans.

There is a growing body of evidence that a diet rich in bioactive compounds from herbs and spices has the ability to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The consumption of herbs and spices is often overlooked in the studies on food intake. However, measurement of dietary intake of these products, as a source of bioactive compounds, including salicylates, has recently gained much significance. The aims of the study were (i) to assess the intake of herbs and spices at the individual level and (ii) to calculate the dietary salicylates intake from herbs and spices among adult omnivores and vegans

Quantification of Ochratoxin A in 90 spice and herb samples using the ELISA method.

This study addressed the challenge of accurately detecting mycotoxins in herbs and spices, which have gained popularity as alternative medicines but pose health risks due to potential contamination. We used a competitive direct ELISA kit (Art No. 8610), Veratox for Ochratoxin, to quantify Ochratoxin A in the herb and spice samples. The samples were first prepared using solid-liquid extraction with 70% methanol. The resulting filtrate was then subjected to ELISA analysis. The results of the analysis were then further analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA). In this study, PCA was used

Antifungal Efficacy of Spice Extracts against Candida albicans: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Candida species are normal commensals and are isolated intra-orally in 17%-75% of healthy individuals and all debilitated people. Eradication of candidiasis is complicated by the emergence of Candida strains that are resistant to the currently used antifungal agents. Plants as remedies are gaining popularity in developed countries. Although many plants have already been investigated against Candida albicans, the search is still to find a long-term prevention or cure for oral candidiasis. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was (1) to evaluate the antifungal activity of black p
