Spinal hydatid disease.

Vertebral hydatid cysts are rare and found in less than 1% of all the cases of hydatidosis. Neural compression is common in vertebral hydatidosis. The prognosis is generally regarded as very poor. This paper examines the natural history and complications which may arise during the treatment of vertebral hydatid cyst, and discusses their treatment. Thirteen cases of hydatid disease affecting the vertebrae are presented. The patients were admitted with symptoms of spinal cord compression. Twelve were treated by laminectomy and one by costotransversectomy. Low back pain radiating to the legs and

A plasma 3-marker microRNA biosignature distinguishes spinal tuberculosis from other spinal destructive diseases and pulmonary tuberculosis.

Accurate spinal tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis is of utmost importance for adequately treating and managing the disease. Given the need for additional diagnostic tools, this study aimed to investigate the utility of host serum miRNA biomarkers for diagnosing and distinguishing spinal tuberculosis (STB) from pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and other spinal diseases of different origins (SDD). For a case-controlled investigation, a total of 423 subjects were voluntarily recruited, with 157 cases of STB, 83 cases of SDD, 30 cases of active PTB, and 153 cases of healthy controls (CONT) in 4 clinical cen

Minimally Invasive Spinal Treatment (MIST)-A New Concept in the Treatment of Spinal Diseases: A Narrative Review.

In the past two decades, minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) techniques have been developed for spinal surgery. Historically, minimizing invasiveness in decompression surgery was initially reported as a MISS technique. In recent years, MISS techniques have also been applied for spinal stabilization techniques, which were defined as minimally invasive spine stabilization (MISt), including percutaneous pedicle screws (PPS) fixation, lateral lumbar interbody fusion, balloon kyphoplasty, percutaneous vertebroplasty, cortical bone trajectory, and cervical total disc replacement. These MISS tech

The Biological Enhancement of Spinal Fusion for Spinal Degenerative Disease.

In this era of aging societies, the number of elderly individuals who undergo spinal arthrodesis for various degenerative diseases is increasing. Poor bone quality and osteogenic ability in older patients, due to osteoporosis, often interfere with achieving bone fusion after spinal arthrodesis. Enhancement of bone fusion requires shifting bone homeostasis toward increased bone formation and reduced resorption. Several biological enhancement strategies of bone formation have been conducted in animal models of spinal arthrodesis and human clinical trials. Pharmacological agents for osteoporosis

[Effect of spinal exercises on spinal parameters in Scheuermann disease].

Changes in the parameters of the spine (grade of kyphosis, total mobility of dorsolumbal spine, lumbal Schober's sign, finger-ground distance) within one year were studied in 103 Scheuermann-patients. In patients doing regular exercises the kyphosis did not increase and their finger-ground distance improved significantly; whilst in patients not doing regular exercises the kyphosis increased slightly though significantly, and their finger-ground distance did not improve. These result prove the beneficial effect of regular exercises.

[Spinal cord compression in malignant plasmacytic diseases. Apropos of 6 cases].

Myeloma may be complicated or revealed by spinal cord compression. Out of 105 cases of myeloma admitted to this Department, 6 cases of spinal cord compression were observed, with a favourable outcome after treatment by laminectomy combined with radiotherapy. In 5 cases out of 6, spinal cord compression was either the presenting sign or occurred within the first months after diagnosis. Compression occurred in the thoracic cord in 5 cases, and in the lumbar cord in 1 case. The interval between the first symptom and diagnosis varied greatly (from a few hours to 1 year), as did the degree of parap

Use of spinal cord stimulation in treatment of intractable headache diseases.

Headache diseases remain one of the leading causes of disability in the world. With the development of neuromodulation strategies, high cervical spinal cord stimulation (hcSCS) targeting the trigeminocervical complex has been deployed to treat refractory headache diseases. In this article, we review the proposed mechanism behind hcSCS stimulation, and the various studies that have been described for the successful use of this treatment strategy in patients with chronic migraine, cluster headache, and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias.

Management of neuromuscular diseases and spinal muscular atrophy in Latin America.

Latin America (LA) has a population of ~645 million people distributed over 33 countries with marked political, cultural and economic differences. In LA, patients with inherited neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) often do not have access to specialized medical centers and many of them go undiagnosed. General management and care of spinal muscular dystrophy (SMA) patients in the region varies due to heterogeneous health care. An active generation of young clinical neurologists is being trained for the specialized care of SMA and other neuromuscular (NM) patients, both in the private and public secto
