Anterior spinal fusion was carried out in 29 adult mongrel dogs in order to evaluate: (a) the degree to which intervertebral discs and endplates should be removed; (b) the optimum source of bone graft material and the best technique for implantation; (c) the effect of a previous posterior spinal fusion on the outcome of anterior spinal surgery; and (d) possible deleterious effects on the spinal canal. A total of 54 disc spaces were fused. In those fusions where none of the disc was resected, a 38% rate of successful fusion was achieved; this compares with 70% when one-half of the disc and endp

Experience with the use of the Kiel bone graft in anterior cervical interbody fusion in cervical spondylosis is reported. The survey reviews the results of operations on 73 disc spaces in 65 consecutive patients, from 2 to 5 years after the operation. We have failed to confirm that any bony fusion in the true sense occurs with Kiel bone in anterior cervical interbody fusion. However, the aims of the operations are achieved, namely removal of the disc and osteophyte, fixation of the spine to prevent compression of the neural tissues, distraction of the adjacent vertebral bodies providing increa

BACKGROUND: Although the gold standard for the surgical treatment of thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis has been posterior spinal fusion, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery recently has become a viable alternative. In the treatment of structural thoracic curves, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has demonstrated outcomes equivalent to those of posterior spinal fusion with use of an all-hook or hybrid pedicle screw-hook construct. No study to date, however, has compared this technique with posterior spinal fusion with thoracic pedicle screws, which has become the current standard of

Spinal fusions are performed to treat congenital skeletal malformations, spondylosis, degenerative disk diseases, and other pathologies of the vertebrae that can be resolved by reducing motion between neighboring vertebrae. Unfortunately, up to 100,000 fusion procedures fail per year in the United States, suggesting that efforts to develop new approaches to improve spinal fusions are justified. We have explored whether the use of an osteotropic oligopeptide to target an attached bone anabolic agent to the fusion site might be exploited to both accelerate the mineralization process and improve

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies reported that teriparatide (recombinant human parathyroid hormone) accelerated spinal fusion following posterior lumbar inter-body fusion surgery, and combination therapy using teriparatide and denosumab increased bone marrow density more than teriparatide alone. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of combination therapy with teriparaide and denosumab on spinal fusion after posterior lumbar interbody fusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen osteoporotic patients with lumbar canal stenosis were randomly divided into two treatment groups, a teripa

Five patients with classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome developed severe spinal deformities. Two were shown to have type-VI collagen abnormalities. Three had a double structural scoliosis of the thoracic and lumbar regions, one had a single thoracic scoliosis and one had a thoracic kyphosis. The curves first developed before the age of four years, and were not controlled by bracing. Major corrective surgery with posterior fusion was performed at a mean age of 11 years 8 months. Excessive blood loss could be controlled and although wound haematoma and dehiscence were common, they did not provide ma

UNLABELLED: Nowadays, vertebral stenosis is the most common indication for surgical treatment in patients over 65 years old in spine surgery. According to the literature, there are conflicting data on the incidence and indications for revision surgery after previous spinal decompression and fusion for lumbar spinal stenosis.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence and indications for revision surgery after previous spinal decompression and fusion for lumbar spinal stenosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective single-center study enrolled 1233 patients with lumbar spine stenosis who underwent

The aim of the current study was to examine the correlation between lumbar lordosis, spinal fusion, and functional outcome in patients suffering from severe low back pain, treated by posterolateral spinal fusion with or without pedicle screw instrumentation. One hundred thirty patients were randomly allocated to posterolateral lumbar fusion with or without Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation. Functional outcome was assessed preoperatively, and 1 and 2 years postoperatively. Lordosis angles of the lumbar spine and fusion rates were assessed at the 1- and 2-year follow-up. No difference in lordosis

BACKGROUND: Severe scoliosis in children can cause cardiovascular, respiratory, and functional impairments. Treatment options include anterior, posterior, and combined surgical approaches, often using traction methods like Halo-gravity traction (HGT). This study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of single-stage posterior-only (PO) correction for scoliosis curves over 90°. It compares it with other methods involving anterior or posterior release and HGT followed by posterior spinal fusion (PSF). METHODS: The study involved 52 pediatric scoliosis patients with Cobb angles ≥ 90°, treated bet

BACKGROUND: Lumbar fusion corrects spinal deformities and improves spinal complications. Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is strongly correlated with spinal mobility, and joint space narrowing of the hip after spinal fusion has gained attention. This study aimed to elucidate the effect of spinal fusion on hip joint space narrowing.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively examined 530 hips of 270 patients who underwent spinal surgery. All the patients underwent whole-spine radiography before and at the final follow-up. Patients were divided into three groups (N group: non-spinal fusion, S group: up t

Posterior spinal instrumented fusion (PSIF) is a treatment option for adolescent spinal deformity. PSIF leads to loss of spinal segment motion. It is unclear the extent to which spinal stiffness is perceived by adolescent patients after fusion. Focus groups of adolescents between ages 11 and 21 years who underwent PSIF for spinal deformity were performed. Focus groups were evaluated for common themes, and a 36-question survey was designed. Survey responses were analyzed relative to last instrumented vertebra (LIV) and Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) scores. Five focus groups were held w

BACKGROUND: Postoperative follow-up visits (PFUs) allow providers to track patient recovery but can be costly to patients. With the advent of the novel coronavirus pandemic, virtual/phone visits have been utilized as an alternative to in-person PFUs. Patients were surveyed to elucidate patient satisfaction with postoperative care in the setting of increased virtual follow-up visits. A prospective survey with retrospective cohort analysis of chart data was conducted to better understand the factors influencing patient satisfaction related to their PFUs after spine fusion with the goal of improv

Post-operative wound complications are some of the most common acute complications following spine surgery. These surgical site infections (SSI) contribute to increased healthcare related costs. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has long been used for treatment of soft tissue injury or defects. NPWT may reduce the incident of SSI following spinal fusion procedures; however, its potential applications need further clarification. Thus, we conducted a retrospective analysis of two cohorts to compare NPWT to traditional sterile dressings following spinal fusions in regards to post-operative o

Over the past several decades, there has been an upward trend in the total number of spinal fusion procedures worldwide. Advanced spinal fusion techniques with or without internal fixation, additional innovations in surgical approaches, innovative implants including a wide variety of interbody devices, and new alternatives in bone grafting materials are some reasons for the increasing number of spine fusion procedures. Moreover, the indications for spinal fusion have broadened over time. Initially developed for the treatment of instability and deformity due to tuberculosis, scoliosis, and trau
