[Spinal cord injuries caused by suicide attempts].

During 1965-1987 45 patients were admitted to the Rehabilitation Hospital in Hornbaek, Denmark because of spinal cord injury (SCI) due to suicide attempts. The proportion of traumatic SCI due to this cause increased significantly during the period: 1965-1974: 3.5%, 1975-1984: 8%, 1985-1987: 13%. The median age at injury was 31 years, and the female to male ratio 1.6. In 38 instances (84%), SCI was caused by jumps from buildings. At the time of the SCI 62% were unemployed or receiving an early pension; 60% were living without a partner; 62% had previously been admitted to psychiatric hospitals,

Detrusor function in suprasacral spinal cord injuries.

A total of 21 patients with chronic, stable suprasacral spinal cord injuries underwent a comprehensive neurological evaluation. A second lumbosacral lesion was excluded. The urodynamic findings were relatively constant as 95% of the patients showed detrusor hyperreflexia with elevated pressures, sphincteric dyssynergia and a competent bladder neck during the filling phase. The urodynamic findings of unexpected detrusor function in high spinal cord injury, for example areflexia and hypocontractility, should raise the clinician's suspicion that there is a lesion or dysfunction involving the sacr

Bodysurfing accidents resulting in cervical spinal injuries.

During the summers of 1987 and 1988, 14 cervical spine injuries sustained during bodysurfing accidents at the beaches around Ocean City, Maryland presented to our Neurotrauma service. All the patients were men, predominantly in their middle years (mean age = 40), and otherwise healthy. Likely mechanisms of injury suggested by radiography and computed tomography-myelography included hyperflexion, hyperextension, and axial loading. Clinically, neurologic deficits were found in 10 patients (71%), of whom 2 were complete sensorimotor quadriplegics below the level of injury, and 8 were incomplete i

[Spinal injuries caused by the flexion mechanism].

The clinical documentation of 1,302 patients treated for spine injury from the flexing mechanism in 1965-1987 was analyzed. The relation between the degree of nervous system damage, the obtained neurological results and the character of injury (fracture or dislocation) as well as the level of spine injury was taken into account. It has been found that incidence of flexing injury of various parts of the spine oscillates slightly (39-44 per cent of all injuries). On the other hand, there is a significant predisposition to more frequent occurring of dislocations at flexing injury of the cervical

Detrusor areflexia in suprasacral spinal cord injuries.

Patients with high thoracic or cervical spinal cord injuries normally have a detrusor contraction during cystometry. Thirteen patients with detrusor areflexia and a high spinal cord lesion underwent neurophysiological evaluation with electromyography of the pelvic floor muscles, lumbosacral-evoked potential to tibial nerve stimulation, the bulbocavernosus reflex and water cystometry. Two groups of patients were identified. Of those patients with initial detrusor areflexia evidence was found for a subclinical second lesion involving the lumbosacral arc, which accounted for the acontractile blad

Contact dermatitis in a spinal injuries centre.

A routine patch testing survey carried out on 122 patients in the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital showed that 40.1% of the patients studied gave positive patch test results to medicaments and other topical applications. The incidence of positive results was higher in patients with a history of pressure sores (45.1%) than in those who had never had sores (33.3%). The significance of these results is discussed.

Incidence of spinal cord injuries in Germany.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to provide recent data on incidence of spinal cord injuries (SCI) in Germany. METHODS: The source of information was data collected via the mandatory submission of ICD-10 GM Codes by German public hospitals after patient discharge. Data from 2013 to 2020 were retrieved from the databases of the Federal Bureau of Statistics. ICD-10 Codes for acute SCI were identified. Statistical analysis was performed using Jamovi and Excel. RESULTS: A total of 10,360 patients were reported, of whom 58.7% suffered from a cervical, 30.8% a thoracic and 10.4% a lumbar lesion

Consequences of neglected traumatic spinal cord injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord injuries cause major disabilities and are devastating events for both patients and healthcare providers. Most traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCIs) are due to motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). Neglected injuries result in complications and poor outcomes. Here, we investigated the causes, consequences, and outcomes of neglected TSCIs. METHODS: This case series study was performed at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, KSA. Of the 750 patients treated between February 2016 and February 2021, 18 patients met our inclusion criterion of neglected high-energy TSCI with neuro

Spinal Fractures Incurred by Sports-Related Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Sports-related injuries are the third commonest cause of spine fractures. Spinal fractures incurred as a result of partaking in sport by their nature are different from those associated with frailty and road traffic accidents. The patient demographics and nature of fractures associated with sports activities are not well documented. We aim to describe the management and outcome of patients with a sports-related spine fracture in a single U.K. major trauma center in a 6-year time period. METHODS: Patients with sports-related spinal fractures were identified from the Trauma Audit an

[SPINAL CORD INJURIES DUE TO VIRAL INFECTIONS].

Spinal cord injury (SCI) etiology can be either traumatic or non-traumatic. Non-traumatic SCI is of growing importance, with studies indicating increased incidence, partly because of population aging. Approximately 9% of these injuries are secondary to an infectious cause. SCI has significant implications on the patient's quality of life. A successful rehabilitation process focuses on maximizing independence and setting achievable goals according to the patient's needs and desires. The medical staff should be familiar with the natural history of such injuries while taking into consideration th

Management of acute traumatic spinal cord injuries.

Acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating disease process affecting tens of thousands of people across the USA each year. Despite the increase in primary prevention measures, such as educational programs, motor vehicle speed limits, automobile running lights, and safety technology that includes automobile passive restraint systems and airbags, SCIs continue to carry substantial permanent morbidity and mortality. Medical measures implemented following the initial injury are designed to limit secondary insult to the spinal cord and to stabilize the spinal column in an attempt to

Anterior fixation of thoracolumbar traumatic spinal injuries.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic spinal fractures require surgical treatment to restore the anatomical curvatures of the spine and release the nervous structures. However, uniform management guidelines have not been established and thus the literature includes papers focussing only on the posterior techniques as well as those assessing the anterior or anteroposterior approaches. This paper presents the outcomes of the treatment of spinal fractures with anterior and anteroposterior fixation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study enrolled 48 patients. The age of the patients at the time of injury was 36.8 years

Spinal cord injuries in children and adolescents.

This chapter provides an overview of spinal cord injuries (SCI) in children and adolescents, including epidemiology, medical and musculoskeletal complications, rehabilitation and psychosocial aspects. Males are more commonly affected than females during adolescence; however, as the age at injury decreases, the preponderance of males becomes less marked, and by 3 years of age the number of females with SCIs equals that of males. The neurologic level and degree of completeness varies with age; among children injured prior to 12 years of age approximately two-thirds are paraplegic and approximate

Spinal cord injuries and orgasm: a review.

Definitions of orgasm remain varied, and physiologic markers have not been standardized or consistently applied. The occurrence of orgasm after spinal cord injury (SCI) has been documented for a number of years; however, in the recent past, the neurologic and autonomic correlates associated with orgasm after SCI have been investigated. In this article we review recent studies pertaining to the occurrence of orgasm after SCI. Laboratory-based assessments of orgasmic responsiveness of women and men with known levels and degrees of SCI have shown the effects of orgasm on peripheral autonomic resp
