The authors present two cases of extradural spinal lipomas causing spinal cord compression, not associated with spinal dysraphism. Sixty-nine cases of such tumours have been reported in the literature. It is important to distinguish between two histological types of these neoplasms: angiolipoma and true lipoma. They have a different distribution in relation to age and site of occurrence. The outcome can be quite variable considering the greater surgical problems that true lipomas can cause.

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2024eng
Extradural neoplasms are the most common spinal tumors in small animals. A bilobed appearance of ventral extradural spinal lesions ("gullwing sign") on MRI has been described with various conditions. The objective of this retrospective study was to determine if a "gullwing sign" is more common with certain types of extradural tumors. MRI studies of dogs and cats with extradural spinal neoplasms were reviewed for the presence of a "gullwing sign". Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate a possible relationship between tumor class and the presence of a "gullwing sign". Sixty-six cases wer

Radiation myelopathy is a well-known complication of irradiation therapy of neoplasms in the vicinity of the spinal cord. In the case presented myelopathy developed after therapeutic Co 60 irradiation of lingual carcinoma on the background of spinal vasculo-dysraphic malformation. The pathogenetic mechanism of necrotic myelopathy in this case is discussed.

MR imaging has evolved as the primary modality for imaging spinal neoplasms; however, neoplasms must be distinguished from unusual appearances of degenerative lesions. This article reviews MR imaging findings of a variety of neoplastic lesions of the lumbar spine. For example, extradural, metastatic tumors are the most common; nerve sheath tumors are the most common intradural extramedullary tumors; and ependymoma accounts for most of the tumors arising from the filum terminale.

Neoplastic disorders of the spinal cord are uncommon but clinically significant causes of myelopathy. MR imaging is central to diagnosis, staging, surgical planning, and follow-up. This article provides a compartment-based imaging approach to spinal cord neoplasms, emphasizing distinct MR imaging features of common intramedullary tumors, conus and filum lesions, and modern tumor molecular classification.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of fibroblastic origin. They commonly arise from visceral pleura, but also arise from nonserosal sites such as meninges, central nervous system parenchyma, and spinal cord. In the spinal cord, SFTs commonly arise from the thoracic spinal cord, followed by cervical spinal cord, lumbar spinal cord, and sacrum. Histologically, SFTs can be similar to hemangiopericytoma, schwannoma, fibrous meningioma, fibroma, gliofibroma, and ependymoma. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) plays an important role in differentiating SFTs from other identical tum

Intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMSCT) are a rare subset of neoplasms classified based on anatomical location. The most common presenting symptom is pain; however, the high prevalence of back pain in the general public secondary to common causes including degenerative disc disease or osteoarthritis, makes diagnosing spinal cord tumors a challenge. We present a case of a 43-year-old male with a cervical intramedullary ependymoma to discuss the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of these spinal tumors.

Intramedullary tumours (IMTs) are the least common neoplasms of the spinal canal. The majority of them are ependymomas and astrocytomas, the third commonest is haemangioblastoma, while other tumours of the spinal cord are relatively rare. This review presents on update on the imaging of spinal cord tumours. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging method of choice in diagnosing IMTs, with other modalities playing a supplementary role. The authors discuss the MRI protocol in IMTs including advanced techniques and present the imaging features of particular tumours. The differentiation of

The technique, diagnostic results and significance as well as limitations of selective spinal angiography differential diagnosis of vertebro-spinal tumors and vascular malformations are described. By this angiographic examination, important preoperative information of exact size, extent and localisation of the neoplasms, the vascular supply and their topographical relation to the anterior spinal artery can be obtained. In spinal vascular malformations is the best method. Arterial embolisation of vascularised tumors or haemangiomas can be indicated to reduce the risk of intraoperative bleeding.

Hemangioblastomas are rare tumors which account for 0.9-2.1% of central nervous system neoplasms. The most common site of hemangioblastomas is the cerebellum, while they are rarely located in spinal cord, cerebrum and brain stem. Hemangioblastomas occur as a sporadic entity, and as a manifestation of von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. A 33-year old patient with isolated cervical spinal cord hemangioblastoma is presented.

In general tumours of lipoid origin are benign. A high proportion of cases are mesenchymal neoplasms localised in subcutaneous tissue. Neurological signs related to compression of neural structures by fat within the vertebral canal were first presented in 1975. The lipogenic neoplasms represent 1-4% of spinal tumours, and generally are associated with congenital disorders of the spine. These fatty swellings are usually benign, but penetrating deeply into the spine, and connecting with spinal cord, cauda equina or filium terminale, they produce deficits. The deficits may be present at birth but

OBJECTIVES: Discuss intramedullary, intradural/extramedullary, and extradural spinal tumors including imaging characteristics with emphasis on MR and advances in treatment.
METHODS: Literature and institutional review.
RESULTS: Spinal tumors: intramedullary, intradural/extramedullary, and extradural, comprise a wide range of histological tumors with an even wider range of clinical symptoms and prognostic features. They are relatively rare and if left untreated, can cause serious neurological deficits and disability. An accurate diagnosis is therefore crucial in determining prognosis and dire

Acute onset of neurological signs and symptoms referable to the spine including difficulty walking, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and paresthesias in the extremities may be manifestations of pediatric spine emergency. Trauma is the most common etiology for a pediatric spinal emergency. Because a history of trauma is often available, the role of imaging involves detection of spinal injuries. Other pathologies such as infection, inflammation, vascular, and neoplasms may lead to pediatric spinal emergencies that also require imaging for assistance in determining the etiology and appropriate mana

Myopericytomas are perivascular myoid neoplasms that rarely exhibit malignant characteristics. They usually arise in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue and exceptionally involve deep soft tissues, with spinal localization being rare. We report the case of a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman who presented with pain in the interscapular region and progressive loss of lower limb strength. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid neoplastic mass at the T3 level, with spinal canal invasion and spinal cord signal abnormalities. The pregnancy was terminated, followed by lesion embolizat

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord hemangioblastomas are benign, highly vascular neoplasms that affect the brain and, rarely, the spinal cord. They can be solitary or as part of von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. Radiosurgery is not a suitable treatment option. Endovascular embolization can only be adjunct to surgery.
METHOD: We present a detailed approach to resection of a spinal cord hemangioblastoma. A video demonstrates the microsurgical technique and discusses complication avoidance.
CONCLUSION: The pitfalls to consider are preservation of normal spinal cord vessels, protection of the pia-arachnoid cleav

Metastatic bone disease in 322 patients was analyzed to assess the frequency and behavior of disseminated carcinoma to the vertebral column. Breast, lung, and prostate neoplasms were the most frequent tumors of origin in the 55% of patients who had vertebral lesions. The lumbar spine was the site of the greatest number of metastases. Back pain did not occur in 36% of the 179 patients with spinal disease. Cord compression occurred in 20% of the patients with vertebral involvement, and prostate tumors were the most frequent neoplasm to cause epidural spinal cord impingement. Hypernephroma was th

A typical case of pseudoclaudication syndrome (neurogenic intermittent claudication), where the cause of the lumbar spinal canal narrowing was an intraspinal neoplasm, is reported. A neoplasm as the cause of this syndrome seems to be very rare, possibly because of the progressive nature of the space-occupying lesion and hence the rapid development of other predominant symptoms.
