Estrone degrading enzymes of Spirulina CPCC-695 and synthesis of bioplastic precursor as a by-product.

Estrone, a steroidal estrogen that is persistently contaminating the surface water has been classified as an endocrine disruptor and as Group-1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Long-term exposure to estrone-contaminated water disrupt physiology, behaviour and sexual development of living organisms that lead to many disorders. So, it has to be eliminated from our surrounding. Its biological degradation is a cost effective and eco-friendly approach. The present study targets to predict the degradation pathway and understand the role of cyanobacterial enzymes: oxidoreductases (laccase

A spirulina-enhanced diet provides neuroprotection in an α-synuclein model of Parkinson's disease.

Inflammation in the brain plays a major role in neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, microglial cell activation is believed to be associated with the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). An increase in microglia activation has been shown in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) of PD models when there has been a decrease in tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) positive cells. This may be a sign of neurotoxicity due to prolonged activation of microglia in both early and late stages of disease progression. Natural products, such as spirulina, derived fro

Effects of graded dietary levels of Spirulina maxima on vitamins A and E in male rats.

The effects of ingesting the alga Spirulina maxima on the storage and utilization of vitamins A and E were investigated by feeding diets containing 0, 2.7, 10.7, 18.7 and 26.7% S. maxima to male rats for 6 wk. All diets contained 18% protein, which was contributed by S. maxima or by casein or by a mixture of them. Growth results indicated that rats did not utilize the diets containing S. maxima as well as the casein control diet (0% S. maxima) when levels were 10.7% or more of the diet. The ingestion of S. maxima caused a significant increase in dry matter and chloroform-extractable crude fat

Vision restoration in degenerative blindness via a living optoelectroactive PEDOT-Spirulina subretinal prosthesis.

Electronic retinal prostheses represent a promising strategy for restoring vision in patients with degenerative retinal diseases. However, conventional retinal implants utilizing rigid electrodes encounter critical limitations, including mechanical mismatch with delicate retinal tissues and inflammation mediated by reactive oxygen species. To address these challenges, we introduce an innovative bio-hybrid retinal prosthesis composed of a living photosynthetic hydrogel scaffold synthesized from poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and Spirulina platensis (Sp). The scaffold is designed for i

Biochemical Characterization of Laccase from Spirulina CPCC-695 and Their Role in Estrone Degradation.

The addition of exogenous endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) like estrone, in the food chain through the aquatic system, disrupts steroid biosynthesis and metabolism by altering either the genomic or non-genomic pathway that eventually results in various diseases. Thus, bioremediation of these compounds is urgently required to prevent their addition and persistence in the environment. Enzymatic degradation has proven to be a knight in shining armour as it is safe and generates no toxic products. The multicopper oxidases (E.C. 1.10.3.2 benzenediol: oxygen oxidoreductase), laccase with the po
