Morphology and genetic characterization of Physaloptera sibirica Petrow & Gorbunov, 1931 (Spirurida: Physalopteridae), from the hog-badger Arctonyx collaris Cuvier (Carnivora: Mustelidae), with molecular phylogeny of Physalopteridae.

BACKGROUND: Nematodes of the family Physalopteridae (Spirurida: Physalopteroidea) commonly parasitize the alimentary canal of all major vertebrate groups. However, many physalopterid species are not adequately described, especially regarding the detailed morphology of the cephalic end. The current genetic database for Physaloptera species is still very limited, which seriously hampers molecular-based species identification. Additionally, the systematic status of some genera and the evolutionary relationships of the subfamilies in the Physalopteridae remain under debate. METHODS: New morpholog

Relative abundance of tree hole-breeding mosquitoes in Boone County, Missouri, USA, with emphasis on the vector potential of Aedes triseriatus for canine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis (Spirurida: Filariidae).

Aedes (Protomacleaya) triseriatus currently shares its habitat in the USA with the introduced species Aedes (Finlaya) japonicus and Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus. In the late 1980s, before the introduction of these 2 species, Ae. triseriatus was the dominant tree hole- and artificial container-breeding mosquito in central Missouri. Aedes triseriatus represented 89% of the mosquito immatures collected from water-filled tree holes and artificial containers at 3 forested field sites in central Missouri, from May to October, 1986 to 1988. Laboratory-reared female Ae. triseriatus were able to suppor

Status of Onchocerca volvulus (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) Transmission and Effect of Climatic Variables on the Vector Population Dynamics After Two Decades of Ivermectin-based Preventive Chemotherapy in the Mbam Valley (Centre Region, Cameroon).

Entomological indicators of onchocerciasis transmission and the effect of climatic variables on the vector population dynamics were investigated in two first-line villages after more than two decades of mass drug administration with ivermectin. Female blackflies were collected in two villages (Bayomen and Biatsota) using human landing method for a period of 12 months. Blackflies were dissected and entomological indices were computed. Monthly temperature, precipitation, and humidity were collected and the Spearman correlation rank test was used to assess the relationship between biting rates an

Evolutionary patterns in life histories of Oxyurida.

The Oxyurida comprises some 850 known species that occur in the intestine of arthropods and vertebrates (one species in annelids). Important arthropod hosts include Diplopoda, Blattodea, Gryllotalpoidea, Passalidae, Scarabaeida and Hydrophilidae. The major vertebrate hosts are lizards, tortoises, primates, rodents and lagomorphs. An underlying characteristic of the group is haplodiploid reproduction and like many haplodiploid groups, pinworms tend to have life histories that involve high levels of inbreeding. Unlike Strongylida, Ascaridida and Spirurida, which have diversified in tissue site a

Demonstrated laboratory effectiveness of an anthelmintic medicated feed for the treatment of Oxyspirura petrowi infections in northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus).

In May 2024, a medicated anthelmintic feed was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat parasitic infection in wild quail following evidence linking parasites to northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) population impacts. During the approval process, it was confirmed that the feed significantly reduced parasite burdens in wild bobwhite populations after 3 weeks of treatment. However, no studies were conducted on the drug's efficacy in individual bobwhite in a controlled laboratory setting. In this study, we infected pen-reared bobwhite with Oxyspirura petrowi, an eyeworm comm

Pre-existing Microfilarial Infections of American Robins (Passeriformes: Turdidae) and Common Grackles (Passeriformes: Icteridae) Have Limited Impact on Enhancing Dissemination of West Nile Virus in Culex pipiens Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae).

Microfilariae (MF) are the immature stages of filarial nematode parasites and inhabit the blood and dermis of all classes of vertebrates, except fish. Concurrent ingestion of MF and arboviruses by mosquitoes can enhance mosquito transmission of virus compared to when virus is ingested alone. Shortly after being ingested, MF penetrate the mosquito's midgut and may introduce virus into the mosquito's hemocoel, creating a disseminated viral infection much sooner than normal. This phenomenon is known as microfilarial enhancement. Both American Robins and Common Grackles harbor MF-that is, Eufilari

Ultrastructure of the body wall of Cystidicoloides ephemeridarum (Nematoda, Cystidicolidae) in relation to the histopathology of this nematode in salmonids.

Light, scanning and transmission electron microscope examinations of adult Cystidicoloides ephemeridarum nematodes, parasitic in the stomach of brown trout (Salmo trutta fario L.), revealed that the body wall is composed of a cuticle, a hypodermis and longitudinally oriented somatic musculature. The body cuticle is composed of a trilaminated epicuticle, an outer and inner cortical zone, a median zone with globular bodies and a basal zone consisting of three subzones. Massive cuticle in the three zones and an osmiophilic lining is present in the buccal capsule. Armament is absent both from the

HOST-SHARING DYNAMICS AT PLAY: FIRST RECORD OF SPIROXYS CONTORTUS IN KINOSTERNON SCORPIOIDES FROM BRAZILIAN AMAZON.

The genus Spiroxys Schneider, 1866 comprises species that commonly parasitize chelonians of the suborder Cryptodira found in the Holarctic and Asian regions. Spiroxys contortus (Rudolphi, 1819) was described as parasitizing a freshwater turtle of the suborder Cryptodira in the Palearctic region and is 1 of the most widely recorded species of the genus worldwide, with records even extending to Brazil. Thus, this study aims to report the first record of S. contortus in Kinosternon scorpioides (Linnaeus, 1766), a cryptodiran freshwater turtle of the family Kinosternidae, from 3 municipalities in

Differential Evolutionary Selection and Natural Evolvability Observed in ALT Proteins of Human Filarial Parasites.

The abundant larval transcript (ALT-2) protein is present in all members of the Filarioidea, and has been reported as a potential candidate antigen for a subunit vaccine against lymphatic filariasis. To assess the potential for vaccine escape or heterologous protection, we examined the evolutionary selection acting on ALT-2. The ratios of nonsynonymous (K(a)) to synonymous (K(s)) mutation frequencies (ω) were calculated for the alt-2 genes of the lymphatic filariasis agents Brugia malayi and Wuchereria bancrofti and the agents of river blindness and African eyeworm disease Onchocerca volvulus
