Representation of the ipsilateral visual field by neurons in the macaque lateral intraparietal cortex depends on the forebrain commissures.

Our eyes are constantly moving, allowing us to attend to different visual objects in the environment. With each eye movement, a given object activates an entirely new set of visual neurons, yet we perceive a stable scene. One neural mechanism that may contribute to visual stability is remapping. Neurons in several brain regions respond to visual stimuli presented outside the receptive field when an eye movement brings the stimulated location into the receptive field. The stored representation of a visual stimulus is remapped, or updated, in conjunction with the saccade. Remapping depends on ne

Effect of thin-split encephalomyosynangiosis on transient neurological events in revascularization surgery for pediatric patients with moyamoya disease.

OBJECTIVE: Transient neurological events (TNEs) are among the most important events after revascularization surgery in pediatric patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). Although hemodynamic changes and crying are representative factors of TNEs, brain compression by encephalomyosynangiosis (EMS) is another important cause of TNEs. Therefore, the authors assumed that making the EMS as thin as possible reduces the frequency of TNEs. However, thin-split EMS can lead to insufficient development of collateral vessels. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of thin-split EMS in combined revasculariza

Ex Situ Dual Hypothermic Oxygenated Machine Perfusion for Human Split Liver Transplantation.

UNLABELLED: Liver splitting allows the opportunity to share a deceased graft between 2 recipients but remains underutilized. We hypothesized that liver splitting during continuous dual hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (DHOPE) is feasible, with shortened total cold ischemia times and improved logistics. Here, we describe a left lateral segment (LLS) and extended right lobe (ERL) liver split procedure during continuous DHOPE preservation with subsequent transplantation at 2 different centers. METHODS: After transport using static cold storage, a 51-year-old brain death donor liver under

The processing of chimeric and dichotic emotional stimuli by connected and disconnected cerebral hemispheres.

Hemispheric asymmetries have been widely explored in both the visual and the auditory domain, but little is known about hemispheric asymmetries in audio-visual integration. We compared the performance of a partially callosotomized patient, a total split-brain patient and a control group during the evaluation of the emotional valence of chimeric faces and dichotic syllables (an emotional syllable in one ear and white noise in the other ear) presented unimodally (only faces or only syllables) or bimodally (faces and syllables presented simultaneously). Stimuli could convey happy and sad expressi

Effects of tensioning errors in split transfers of tibialis anterior and posterior tendons.

BACKGROUND: Split transfers of the tibialis anterior and posterior tendons are commonly performed to address hindfoot varus deformities in patients with cerebral palsy, stroke, or brain injury. Poor outcomes from these procedures are often attributed to a failure to tension the transferred tendon properly, but the mechanical effects of this aspect of the procedure have not been quantified, to our knowledge. The purpose of the present study was to use a cadaver model to examine changes in the actions of these muscles that occur when the tensions in the halves of the split tendon are intentional

Split hypoglossal facial anastomosis for facial nerve palsy due to skull base fractures: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The biomechanics of primary TBI involve a direct impact, practically extended to the base of the skull, and most of the skull base fractures (SBF) are identified in anterior and medial cranial fossa. Furthermore, those predicted in the medial area are related to fissures from temporal bones. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report two cases of right facial nerve palsy initiated by SBF's, which were diagnosed and treated at our institution. The 3D CT evaluation in our first case showed a longi

DALMATIAN: An Algorithm for Automatic Cell Detection and Counting in 3D.

Current 3D imaging methods, including optical projection tomography, light-sheet microscopy, block-face imaging, and serial two photon tomography enable visualization of large samples of biological tissue. Large volumes of data obtained at high resolution require development of automatic image processing techniques, such as algorithms for automatic cell detection or, more generally, point-like object detection. Current approaches to automated cell detection suffer from difficulties originating from detection of particular cell types, cell populations of different brightness, non-uniformly stai

Translingual approach of the basal surface of the diencephalon of the rat and retrograde labeling from the median eminence.

A unique surgical procedure is described by which the basal surface of the diencephalon can be exposed without cannulation of the trachea. The basal surface of the diencephalon is exposed through a midsagittal incision by splitting the oral diaphragm, tongue, and soft palate respectively. Then a small hole is drilled in the base of the skull. After manipulation on the base of the brain is completed, the hole in the skull is plugged with Histoacryl and the soft palate and tongue are sutured. Rats having such interventions survive in excellent condition for days without the need of intensive med

A retrospective study on outcomes following posterior fossa decompression with dural splitting surgery in patients with Chiari type I malformation.

BACKGROUND: Chiari type I malformation (CM I) is a congenital defect of the skull base and brain. Posterior fossa decompression alone or with duraplasty and partial resection of cerebellar tonsils is a standard approach. The effectiveness of other approaches such as the dural splitting technique is still under the study. OBJECTIVE: To study and compare the outcome following a dural splitting surgery with the duraplasty group. METHOD: 184 patients that received dural splitting surgery and 39 patients that received duraplasty surgery were identified. The outcome of the individual procedure in

The contribution of language to the right-hemisphere conceptual representations: a selective survey.

Although levels of verbal and pictorial performance are known to depend on the degree of left versus right atrophy in the early stages of semantic dementia, the nature of these differences remains controversial. It has been proposed that there is a unitary, bilaterally represented, abstract semantic system and that differential task performance reflects the impact of greater connectivity between the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and the left dominant language systems. This interpretation explains the greater involvement of the left ATL in verbally coded semantic knowledge, but not the prev

Centro-median stimulation yields additional seizure frequency and attention improvement in patients previously submitted to callosotomy.

RATIONALE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been increasingly used in the treatment of refractory epilepsy over the last decade. We report on the outcome after thalamic centro-median (CM) DBS in patients with generalized epilepsy who had been previously treated with extended callosal section. METHODS: Four consecutive patients with generalized epilepsy who were previously submitted to callosal section and had at least 1 year of follow-up after deep brain implantation were studied. Age ranged from 19 to 44 years. All patients were submitted to bilateral CM thalamic DBS. Post-operative CT scans

[Clinical and experimental use of Cogimir].

This paper introduces 3 applications of a computer-based methodology for the assessment of cognitive abilities which has been developed during the Cogimir space project: an experimental study comparing gender-related lexical decision abilities, an investigation of hemisphere-specific reading in a subject with a partial split-brain syndrome, and a follow-up study measuring the effect of rehabilitation in a patient with frontal brain damage. Computerized tasks have several advantages over conventional neurobehavioral measurement procedures, among them exact stimulus and response control, the abi

Successful liver transplantation of two brothers with crigler-najjar syndrome type 1 using a single cadaveric organ.

Crigler-Najjar type 1 disease (CNS1) is the result of a genetic defect, leading to complete functional loss of an enzyme which glucuronidates bilirubin. As a consequence, unconjugated bilirubin accumulates and may cause kernicterus, the most serious complication in adolescents. Phototherapy effectively adjusts bilirubin levels less than critical concentrations over many years but become less effective in elder children. Therefore, liver transplantation must be performed as definite therapy in these patients to avoid irreversible neurological deficits. Two brothers with CNS1, one without neurol

Near Infra-Red Technology to Evaluate Segment IV in Split Liver Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Indocyanine green injected intravenously has been employed in many fields of hepatobiliary surgery such as liver and biliary tree mapping, tumor detection, and graft evaluation in liver transplant. This latter application has, in our opinion, particular potentials when a split liver transplantation is performed 1-3. METHODS: In this study, we used infrared technology to evaluate in real-time the segment 4 region in a recipient of extended right lobe transplantation. Donor data: 50 years old male, brain death, height, 1.70 mt, weight 69 kg; surgical technique employed was in situ s

The plated bayonet forceps: technical note and illustrative video clips.

INTRODUCTION: Plated bayonet forceps (PBF) are bayonet forceps with plated tips. PBF have the advantage for longitudinal dissection and tissue spreading with reduced local pressure. The use of PBF has rarely been described. METHODS: We describe the use of PBF in neurosurgical procedures, including representative surgical video clips showing their use. RESULTS: Overall, the main indications we have used PBF include spinal cord splitting during intramedullary tumor resection or syrinx drainage, and intraparenchymal brainstem tumors. PBF may also be applied for any small field tissue spreading,

Speech-independent production of communicative gestures: evidence from patients with complete callosal disconnection.

Recent neuropsychological, psycholinguistic, and evolutionary theories on language and gesture associate communicative gesture production exclusively with left hemisphere language production. An argument for this approach is the finding that right-handers with left hemisphere language dominance prefer the right hand for communicative gestures. However, several studies have reported distinct patterns of hand preferences for different gesture types, such as deictics, batons, or physiographs, and this calls for an alternative hypothesis. We investigated hand preference and gesture types in sponta

Magnetocephalography: a noninvasive alternative to the Wada procedure.

OBJECT: In this study the authors evaluated the sensitivity and selectivity of a noninvasive language mapping procedure based on magnetoencephalography (MEG), for determining hemispheric dominance for language functions. METHODS: Magnetic activation profiles of the brain were obtained from 100 surgical candidates (age range 8-56 years) with medically intractable seizure disorder by using a whole-head MEG system within the context of a word recognition task. The degree of language-specific activity was indexed according to the number of consecutive sources (modeled as single, moving current di

Fixation techniques for split anterior tibialis transfer in spastic equinovarus feet.

Equinovarus of the foot is the most common lower extremity deformity following traumatic brain injury. We evaluated outcomes of the split anterior tibialis tendon transfer (SPLATT) for correction of equinovarus in 47 patients with hemiplegic traumatic brain injury and specifically studied differences in outcomes with two tendon fixation techniques. Seventeen patients constituting Group I underwent fixation with one technique and 30 constituting Group II had another technique. Patients in both groups had appropriate procedures based on dynamic electromyography and gait analyses. Both groups wer
