Organized community sport participation for children and youth with physical disability: A scoping review protocol.

Children and youth living with physical disability have less opportunities to participate in organized meaningful physical activities in their communities than their typically developing peers. Equitable access to community sport programs that aim to support the health, social participation, and well-being of these children and youth is required. Frameworks for program implementation and evaluation offer practical tools for supporting quality participation. Limited research exists demonstrating the practical application of these conceptual model frameworks. The objective of this scoping review

A Social Justice Approach to Assistive Technology and Well-Being of People With Visual Disabilities in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Qualitative Narrative Study.

BACKGROUND: The United Nations' third Sustainable Development Goal emphasizes ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being (WB) for all, which requires effective assistive technology (AT) for persons with disabilities. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), however, AT remains largely inaccessible, and high abandonment rates indicate that many existing solutions fail to meet users' needs. To improve AT design and effectiveness, a deeper understanding of users' lived experiences and the ways AT influences WB is essential. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how technology creates o

Validity and reliability of a single-unit inertial measurement unit: a real-time adapted sports assessment tool for handcycling-based activities.

PURPOSE: Single-device wearable inertial measurement units (SWIMU) have been used to quantify able-bodied sports movement in real-time but have not been adequately validated for use in adapted sports. Access to the kinematic profile of adapted sport athletic movements may be important for understanding the effect of technique on performance, fatigue and injury risk. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of a SWIMU during upper-body sports movement in people with physical disabilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven people with disabilities completed three handcycl

"If You Don't Arrange Your Bets Well You Will Still Lose": Gambling Strategies of Visually Impaired Students.

Few studies have focused on people with hearing loss and intellectual disabilities engaging in gambling activities. However, people with visual impairments' energetic participation in sports betting activities is unexplored. This article highlights sports betting strategies of visually impaired students to understand how their motives affect their gambling behaviours as an alternative to their survival. Six male adults aged between 27 and 40 years participated using semi-structured interviews, which were conducted face-to-face, recorded, transcribed, and thematically analysed with the Braun an

Conceptual model of sport-specific classification for para-athletes with intellectual impairment.

The present paper describes the conceptual basis of evidence-based classification of para-athletes with intellectual impairment (II). An extensive description of the theoretical and conceptual foundation of the system as currently conceived is provided, as are examples of its applications in the three sports included in the Paralympic programme for II-athletes in 2020 (i.e., athletics, swimming and table tennis). Evidence-based classification for II-athletes is driven by two central questions: i. How can intellectual impairment be substantiated in a valid and reliable way, and ii. Does intelle

[Role of district and local self-government in disability prevention].

Prevention of common chronic diseases in the development of temporary and/or permanent working disability is not only a significant public health problem but also a serious economic and social issue. The epidemic of traffic-related injuries, work-related injuries and, unfortunately, injuries sustained during sports and recreational activities is pretty disturbing. Article 69 of the Croatian Constitution states that all residents of Croatia have a right to healthy life. The State provides special care for disabled persons and promotes their inclusion into the society (Article 57), and each Croa

Spontaneous facial expressions of emotion of congenitally and noncongenitally blind individuals.

The study of the spontaneous expressions of blind individuals offers a unique opportunity to understand basic processes concerning the emergence and source of facial expressions of emotion. In this study, the authors compared the expressions of congenitally and noncongenitally blind athletes in the 2004 Paralympic Games with each other and with those produced by sighted athletes in the 2004 Olympic Games. The authors also examined how expressions change from 1 context to another. There were no differences between congenitally blind, noncongenitally blind, and sighted athletes, either on the le

"Give Me the Opportunity": Mixed Ability Sports and Quality of Life in People with Intellectual Disabilities.

Over the past decade, a growing body of evidence has highlighted the positive impact of full and equal participation in sport on the quality of life (QoL) of people with intellectual disabilities (IDs). However, access to mainstream sports remains limited due to persistent barriers, which leads to low participation levels among people with IDs. In this context, the Mixed Ability (MA) model offers an innovative approach by promoting the inclusion of people with and without disabilities in the same mainstream teams, without classification processes or modifications to the rules of the sport. The
