Adrenergic and noradrenergic plasma levels in Lesch-Nyhan disease.

Noradrenergic dysfunction and abnormality in monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzyme activity have been reported previously in Lesch-Nyhan (LN) disease. This study examines peripheral indices of adrenergic, noradrenergic, and MAO function in children and young adults with LN disease (n = 11), and healthy subjects (n = 9). Blood samples, collected in identical conditions prior to a positron emission tomography (PET) study, were assayed for concentrations of epinephrine (EPI), norepinephrine (NE), and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (DHPG) (which results from the degradation of NE by monoamine oxidase ty

High Rates of Psychiatric Disorders and Below Normal Mental Capacity Associated With Spastic Peroneal Flatfoot: A New Relationship.

Spastic peroneal flatfoot (SPFF) is a rare hindfoot pathology usually seen in the adolescent age group that is characterized by painful spasms in the peroneal muscles. We have clinically observed that patients with SPFF also have some behavioral and emotional difficulties and problems in their academic achievements. Because of these observations, we investigated the prevalence and patterns of psychiatric disorders and intellectual disability among young subjects with SPFF. Our cohort consisted of 16 patients with SPFF. Their mean age at presentation was 21 (range 13 to 31) years. Only 6 patien

Asymptomatic ventriculomegaly in myelomeningocele: a matched cohort study of neuropsychological outcomes across institutions with varying shunt rates.

PURPOSE: Hydrocephalus management in myelomeningocele (MMC) patients remains controversial. While most institutions recommend surgical intervention for enlarged ventricles, recent studies suggest asymptomatic ventriculomegaly may not require treatment. This study compared cognitive outcomes in MMC patients from different institutions with different hydrocephalus intervention rates. METHODS: Participants with MMC were recruited from two sites: Site 1 (Chicago area; N = 41; selective shunting protocol) and Site 2 (Houston and Toronto; N = 342; historical approach to hydrocephalus management). Maternal Obesity and Excessive Gestational Weight Gain Are Associated with Components of Child Cognition.

BACKGROUND: Maternal overweight and obesity affect two-thirds of women of childbearing age and may increase the risk of impaired child cognition. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to test the hypothesis that high/low gestational weight gain (GWG) and high/low prepregnancy BMI were associated with offspring intelligence quotient (IQ) and executive function at age 10. METHODS: Mother-infant dyads (n = 763) enrolled in a birth cohort study were followed from early pregnancy to 10 y postpartum. IQ was assessed by trained examiners with the use of the Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale-4th edition. Exe

Visuospatial processing and fine motor function among 7-years old Guadeloupe children pre- and postnatally exposed to the organochlorine pesticide chlordecone.

BACKGROUND: Chlordecone is an organochlorine that was largely used as an insecticide to control a species of root borers, the Banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus), in the French West Indies, Guadeloupe and Martinique. Its molecules have been shown to be very persistent in the environment as pollution in soils leading to contamination of water sources and foodstuff will last for several decades. Our team previously reported associations between prenatal chlordecone exposure and poorer fine motor development at two points in time during infancy. OBJECTIVE: To document whether effects of prenat

Gestational age at term delivery and children's neurocognitive development.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is associated with lower neurocognitive performance. However, whether children's neurodevelopment improves with longer gestations within the full-term range (37-41 weeks) is unclear. Given the high rate of obstetric intervention in the USA, it is critical to determine whether long-term outcomes differ for children delivered at each week of term. METHODS: This secondary analysis included 39 199 live-born singleton children of women who were admitted to the hospital in spontaneous labour from the US Collaborative Perinatal Project (1959-76). At each week of term gestat

Vocabulary comprehension in adults with fragile X syndrome (FXS).

BACKGROUND: Receptive and expressive vocabulary in adult and adolescent males with fragile X syndrome (FXS) have been shown as significantly lower than their chronological age; however, receptive vocabulary has been considered a strength relative to mental age. This has not been formally examined, however, and data are needed to compare receptive vocabulary with other language skills and with mental age in individuals with FXS. This is especially important as vocabulary measures are sometimes used as a proxy to estimate language ability. METHODS: This preliminary study examined receptive voca

Assessment of Motor Performance in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Relationship Between Clinical Characteristics and Intelligence-An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Evidence on motor performance in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is scarce and inconsistent. The association of motor impairments with autism severity and intelligence remains insufficiently studied. We aimed to examine motor performance parameters in children with ASD compared with typically developing (TD) peers. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a convenience sample of 26 children with ASD, aged 4-10 years, was recruited from specialized centers in KSA, alongside 27 age- and sex-matched TD children. For the ASD group, severity (Chi

Association between FMR1 mRNA levels and clinical phenotypes in Fragile X syndrome.

Background Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is caused by a CGG repeat expansion in the FMR1 gene on chromosome X that leads to hypermethylation and reduces or completely silences the expression of FMR1 mRNA and its protein product, Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein (FMRP). Since the clinical manifestations of FXS can be variable, there is interest in identifying molecular markers that reflect phenotypic severity. The extent of CGG repeat expansion and resulting hypermethylation varies substantially between patients, suggesting that FMR1 gene silencing differs between individuals with FXS and could

Physical Activity, Symptoms, Quality of Life and Exercise Program Preferences in People With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia.

BackgroundChronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) has a heterogeneous lifelong course. While some patients never require treatment, most experience intermittent periods of active monitoring with other time points in active treatment. Most patients experience significant symptoms which negatively impact their quality of life (QoL). Although physical activity and exercise may help manage symptoms, it is unclear what disease-related factors drive the physical inactivity observed in people with CLL.MethodsThis study explored physical activity among people with CLL and assessed differences and relation
