Role of the gut-microbiota-metabolite axis in the rotenone model of early-stage Parkinson's Disease.

Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in the early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD), but its potential pathogenesis remains unclear. Therefore, in the present study, we used the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to investigate the alterations of gut microbiome and serum amino acid levels in the early-stage PD mice model induced with rotenone. The results demonstrated that the microbial taxa at phylum, family and genus levels remarkably altered in rotenone-induced mice relative to vehicle-induced mice. The rotenone-induced mi

The Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) microbiome varies spatially and with Ascogregarine infection.

The mosquito microbiome alters the physiological traits of medically important mosquitoes, which can scale to impact how mosquito populations sustain disease transmission. The mosquito microbiome varies significantly within individual mosquitoes and among populations, however the ecological and environmental factors that contribute to this variation are poorly understood. To further understand the factors that influence variation and diversity of the mosquito microbiome, we conducted a survey of the bacterial microbiome in the medically important mosquito, Aedes albopictus, on the high Pacific

Variation in the early-life interdigital skin microbiota of lambs in a commercial sheep flock.

INTRODUCTION: The factors shaping early-life microbial colonisation of the ovine interdigital skin, and their potential relevance to foot health and footrot susceptibility, remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated variation in the interdigital skin microbiota among lambs in different age-location groups. METHODS: Interdigital skin swabs were collected from all four feet of 25 lambs aged 0-15 days on a commercial farm. Bacterial community composition was characterised using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and quantitative PCR was used to estimate total bacterial load and detect Diche

Tumor-linked microbiota in the breast: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Recent research suggests that the microbiota may contribute to tumorigenesis via immune, inflammatory, or metabolic mechanisms. This meta-analysis aimed to compare the relative abundance of bacteria among cancerous(C), adjacent normal (NAT) and non-cancerous(N) breast tissues to identify microbial profiles associated with cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus according to PRISMA guidelines. We have included twenty-nine studies published between 2014 and 2024, using 16S rRNA seq

Metagenomic surveillance in Jinan, China, reveals serum microbiome and biochemistry features in fever of unknown origin (FUO) patients.

Here we aim to build up a metagenomics-centered surveillance on the infectious microbiome showing in the fever of unknown origin (FUO) patients. We collected venous blood, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, tissue block, sputum, bone marrow biopsy, and purulent liquid samples from 123 patients. Metagenomic sequencing (mNGS) for both DNA and RNA sequences was performed to profile the total pathogenic microbiome in the samples. A large pool of infectious or conditional infectious bacteria was found, belonging to Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcaceae (10.55%), Burkholderiaceae (10

Methionine Restriction Regulates Cognitive Function in High-Fat Diet-Fed Mice: Roles of Diurnal Rhythms of SCFAs Producing- and Inflammation-Related Microbes.

SCOPE: Methionine restriction (MR) is known to potently alleviate inflammation and improve gut microbiome in obese mice. The gut microbiome exhibits diurnal rhythmicity in composition and function, and this, in turn, drives oscillations in host metabolism. High-fat diet (HFD) strongly altered microbiome diurnal rhythmicity, however, the role of microbiome diurnal rhythmicity in mediating the improvement effects of MR on obesity-related metabolic disorders remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: 10-week-old male C57BL/6J mice are fed a low-fat diet or HFD for 4 weeks, followed with a full diet (

Antimicrobial-resistant Staphylococcus spp. and Mammaliicoccus sciuri isolated from rehabilitating wild mammals in northeastern Brazil: implications for microbiological surveillance and biosafety in wildlife care facilities.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among Staphylococcus and Mammaliicoccus species is a growing concern in wildlife care settings, as rehabilitation centers may represent contact points among wild animals, captive environments, and human handlers. This study characterized antimicrobial resistance profiles, multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) indices, and biofilm formation in Staphylococcus spp. and Mammaliicoccus sciuri isolated from wild mammals housed at a wildlife screening and rehabilitation center in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Oropharyngeal and rectal swabs were collected from 84 indiv

The Changing Epidemiology of Pediatric Endocarditis.

The epidemiology of infective endocarditis (IE) appears to be related to changes in the management of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and the virtual disappearance of rheumatic heart disease. To better understand these changes, we divide the history into: I. The pre-surgical era, II. The early years of CHD surgical intervention, correlated with introduction of antibiotics, III. The modern era of cardiac interventions. Microbiologic changes include an early predominance of viridans streptococci and an overtaking by staphylococci. Additionally, there have been advances in imaging th

Airborne microbial load and diversity: impact of climatic conditions in loose cattle housing systems.

Airborne microbes from animal confinement facilities not only amplify the risk of disease spread among livestock but also pose substantial health threats to animals and farm workers. The objective of this study was to investigate the microbial counts in cattle sheds and their relationship with meteorological factors, including temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity, as well as microbial diversity. Sampling was carried out both indoors and outdoors of two cattle sheds throughout three seasons (summer, rainy, and winter), at fortnightly intervals. Results showed that bacterial and fung

Role of colonic microbiota in colorectal carcinogenesis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The human colonic mucosa is populated by a wide range of microorganisms, usually in a symbiotic relation with the host. Sometimes this balance is lost and a state of dysbiosis arises, exposing the colon to different metabolic and inflammatory stimuli (according to the microbiota's changing profile). Recent findings lead to hypothesize that this unbalance may create a subclinical pro-inflammatory state that increases DNA mutations and, therefore, colorectal carcinogenesis. In this article we aim to systematically review the scientific evidence regarding colonic microbiota an

Comparative analyses of the bacterial microbiota of the human nostril and oropharynx.

The nose and throat are important sites of pathogen colonization, yet the microbiota of both is relatively unexplored by culture-independent approaches. We examined the bacterial microbiota of the nostril and posterior wall of the oropharynx from seven healthy adults using two culture-independent methods, a 16S rRNA gene microarray (PhyloChip) and 16S rRNA gene clone libraries. While the bacterial microbiota of the oropharynx was richer than that of the nostril, the oropharyngeal microbiota varied less among participants than did nostril microbiota. A few phyla accounted for the majority of th

Distribution of Staphylococcus chromogenes and Mammaliicoccus sciuri across cows, farm environment, and workers in 3 Chinese dairy herds with distinct bedding systems.

Non-aureus staphylococci and mammaliicocci (NASM) are among the most frequently detected pathogens in bovine mastitis, yet their dominant species, distribution across the cow-human-environment interface, within-herd population structure, and potential epidemiologic links remain incompletely described in China. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in 3 commercial Chinese dairy herds using distinct bedding systems (manure solids [MNS], new sand [NS], and sawdust). Samples were collected from lactating cows and milk-fed calves (multiple body sites), mastitic milk (clinical and subclinical), the

The Porcine Nasal Microbiota with Particular Attention to Livestock-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Germany-A Culturomic Approach.

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) remains a serious public health threat. Porcine nasal cavities are predominant habitats of LA-MRSA. Hence, components of their microbiota might be of interest as putative antagonistically acting competitors. Here, an extensive culturomics approach has been applied including 27 healthy pigs from seven different farms; five were treated with antibiotics prior to sampling. Overall, 314 different species with standing in nomenclature and 51 isolates representing novel bacterial taxa were detected. Staphylococcus aureus was

Non-aureus staphylococci and mammaliicocci in bovine milk: Antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and associations with management practices in Brazil.

Non-aureus staphylococci and mammaliicocci (NASM) are frequently isolated from bovine milk in cases of mastitis and IMI, as well as from extramammary environments. Despite advances in species-level identification of NASM, it is not consistently performed across studies, which may limit a comprehensive understanding of their epidemiological relevance. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive characterization of NASM isolated from bovine milk across Brazil's 5 major dairy-producing regions. Using MALDI-TOF MS, 309 NASM isolates obtained from cows with low and high SCC and from clinical mastit

16S rRNA terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism for the characterization of the nasopharyngeal microbiota.

A novel non-culture based 16S rRNA Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) method using the restriction enzymes Tsp509I and Hpy166II was developed for the characterization of the nasopharyngeal microbiota and validated using recently published 454 pyrosequencing data. 16S rRNA gene T-RFLP for 153 clinical nasopharyngeal samples from infants with acute otitis media (AOM) revealed 5 Tsp509I and 6 Hpy166II terminal fragments (TFs) with a prevalence of >10%. Cloning and sequencing identified all TFs with a prevalence >6% allowing a sufficient description of bacterial community c
