Microbial drug resistance (Larchmont, N.Y.)2015eng
We investigated the prevalence of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCoNS) isolated from hospitalized patients and outpatients (OP). Out of 350 staphylococcal isolates collected from three hospitals, 190 were coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS). These isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility tests, detection of mecA, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) typing. Among the 190 isolated CoNS, Staphylococcus epidermidis (47.3%) and Staphylococcus haemolyticus (44.2%) were the most prevalent species. Other CoNS species that were isolated were Staphyl

Biofilms are highly resistant to external forces, especially chemicals. Hence, alternative control strategies, like antimicrobial substances, are forced. Antimicrobial surfaces can inhibit and reduce microbial adhesion to surfaces, preventing biofilm formation. Thus, this research aimed to investigate the bacterial attachment and biofilm formation on different sealants and stainless steel (SS) surfaces with or without antimicrobials on two Gram-positive biofilm forming bacterial strains. Antimicrobial surfaces were either incorporated or coated with anti-microbial, -fungal or/and bactericidal

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated inflammatory disorder, where the majority of the patients suffer from psoriasis capitis or scalp psoriasis. Current therapeutics remain ineffective to treat scalp lesions. In this study, we present a whole-metagenome characterization of the scalp microbiome in psoriasis capitis. We investigated how changes in the homeostatic cutaneous microbiome correlate with the condition and identified metagenomic biomarkers (taxonomic, functional, virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance genes) that could partly explain its emergence. Within this study, 83 top and back sc

Mycotic aneurysms are a dilatation of an artery due to infection of the arterial wall. These can develop in various locations. Common pathogens involved are Streptococcus species and Staphylococcus aureus. Yet, there are no documented cases attributed to Staphylococcus capitis. A 47-year-old woman presented with intermittent chest pain. A diagnosis of acute pericarditis with moderate pericardial effusion was made based on transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) findings. Evaluations for infection, vasculitis, and autoimmune conditions were negative, at which time the etiology of pericarditis was de

The skin constitutes with its microbiota the first line of body defense against exogenous stress including air pollution. Especially in urban or sub-urban areas, it is continuously exposed to many environmental pollutants including gaseous nitrogen dioxide (gNO2). Nowadays, it is well established that air pollution has major effects on the human skin, inducing various diseases often associated with microbial dysbiosis. However, very few is known about the impact of pollutants on skin microbiota. In this study, a new approach was adopted, by considering the alteration of the cutaneous microbiot

Two severe cases of pyoderma (staphylococcus aureus) of the scalp, resistant to appropriate antibiotic treatment, proved to be due to exotic dermatophytes (Trichophyton soudanense and Trichophyton violaceum) in two North African children living in France. Both cases exemplify the growing number of Tinea capitis due to anthropophilic species imported from Africa by immigrated populations, their sometimes atypical clinical presentation and their familial epidemiology. Fungal cultures and identification procedures are essential for the diagnosis and epidemiological investigation of such cases.

BACKGROUND: Listeriosis during pregnancy is a rare but life-threatening infection that often presents with nonspecific symptoms, making timely diagnosis difficult. This article reports a case in which the clinical presentation and immune profile were highly consistent with Listeria monocytogenes infection, leading to a presumptive clinical diagnosis. The patient was successfully treated following a diagnostic approach that integrated host immune profiling with AI-assisted decision-making, despite dual interference from Ureaplasma urealyticum detected by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (

A 44-year-old woman, who had undergone gold-weight implantation due to facial palsy and lagophthalmos, arrived at the ophthalmology ward with eyelid swelling and erythema, which rapidly deteriorated under intravenous antibiotics to a necrotic process involving the periocular tissues, the eye, and the anterior orbit. Despite prompt removal of the gold weight, the patient's ocular and systemic condition continued to deteriorate, necessitating evisceration and debridement of necrotic tissue. Cultures showed growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus capitis, Candida glabrata, and Candid

Staphylococcal food poisoning is considered to be one of the most common foodborne illnesses worldwide. Because milk is rich in nutrients and its neutral pH, it leads to the growth of various bacteria. To date, the correlation between enterotoxigenic potential in Staphylococcus species and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), using bioinformatics analysis in buffalo and cow raw milk and the possible health risks from these bacteria, has not been examined in Egypt. A total of 42 Staphylococcus isolates representing 12 coagulase-positive staphylococci (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus interme

Pyomyositis is a bacterial infection of striated muscle, usually located to muscles in the extremities or pelvis. We present a microbiologically unique case report of pyomyositis in the sternocleidomastoid muscle (the first of its kind in Denmark) caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. capitis and possibly Streptococcus pneumoniae. Pyomyositis is very rare but can lead to critical complications such as endocarditis and sepsis. It is therefore important to know the condition when evaluating an infected patient with muscle pain. Treatment consists of antibiotics and - if relevant - surgical ab

BACKGROUND: Pathogenesis of coagulase-negative staphylococcal bloodstream infections among preterm neonates is debated: central venous catheters (CVCs) are considered the major cause and the cornerstone of prevention measures. The role of other means of transmission is unknown.
METHODS: We developed a specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay targeting the dnaJ gene from Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus capitis to detect DNA from CVC used in preterms. Performance of the polymerase chain reaction was tested against 2 control groups of CVC yielding positive (n = 24) or

Coagulase-negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus colonize similar niches in mammals and conceivably compete for space and nutrients. Here, we report that a coagulase-negative staphylococcus, Staphylococcus chromogenes ATCC43764, synthesizes and secretes 6-thioguanine (6-TG), a purine analog that suppresses S. aureus growth by inhibiting de novo purine biosynthesis. We identify a 6-TG biosynthetic gene cluster in S. chromogenes and other coagulase-negative staphylococci including S. epidermidis, S. pseudintermedius and S. capitis. Recombinant S. aureus strains harbouring this operon p

Methicillin-resistant staphylococci have become growing threats to human health, and novel antimicrobials are urgently needed. Natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising alternatives to traditional antibiotics. Here, two novel cationic α-helical antimicrobial peptides, Lausporin-1 and Lausporin-2, were identified from the venom gland of the scorpion L. australasiae through a cDNA library screening strategy. Biochemical analyses demonstrated that Lausporin-1 and Lausporin-2 are cationic α-helical amphipathic molecules. Antimicrobial assays demonstrated that the two peptides possess ant

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have been identified as a major cause of nosocomial infections. Nasal carriage of CoNS in nurses and physicians is known to be an important risk factor for potential hospital infections. This study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of nasal carriage of uncommon coagulase-negative staphylococci among nurse and physician staffs of Tehran University Hospitals. A total of 116 CoNS were isolated from anterior nares of the study participants working in different wards of the hospitals. Thirteen uncommon CoNS were identified using phenotypic and bio

The indiscriminate use of antibiotics has contributed to the dissemination of multiresistant bacteria, which represents a public health concern. The aim of this work was to characterize 27 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from eight wild Northeast Atlantic hakes (Merluccius merluccius, L.) and taxonomically identified as Staphylococcus epidermidis (n = 16), Staphylococcus saprophyticus (n = 4), Staphylococcus hominis (n = 3), Staphylococcus pasteuri (n = 2), Staphylococcus edaphicus (n = 1), and Staphylococcus capitis (n = 1). Biofilm formation was evaluated with a microtiter a

The oral cavity is inhabited by over 500 different bacterial species that normally exist in ecological balance both with each other and with the host. When this equilibrium is disturbed, an overgrowth of individual organisms can occur, which, in turn, can lead to the onset of pathological processes, notably dental caries and periodontitis. Generally, bacteraemias occur more frequently in individuals with periodontal disease, and these bacteraemias have been implicated in the development of a range of systemic diseases, including atherothrombotic disorders. The mechanism underlying this relatio

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) are common symbiotic Gram-positive bacteria colonizing human skin and mucous membranes with lower virulence than Staphylococcus aureus. As crucial pathogens of neonatal infections, they often harbor multiple drug resistance genes and can induce neonatal pneumonia, sepsis, suppurative meningitis, and other clinical manifestations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A preterm neonate at 29+1 weeks' gestation complicated by respiratory distress syndrome and pneumonia received empirical ceftazidime and penicillin for 8 days. The condition initially improved but
