Inoculation Pneumonia Caused by Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus.

RATIONALE: Although frequently retrieved in tracheal secretions of critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation, the existence of pneumonia caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Staphylococcus haemolyticus (S. haemolyticus) inoculated in mice's trachea can infect normal lung parenchyma, increasing concentrations of S. haemolyticus were intratracheally administered in 221 immunocompetent mice. METHODS: Each animal received intratracheally phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) (n = 43) or live (n = 141) or inactivated (n = 37) S. h

Susceptibility patterns of coagulase-negative staphylococci to several newer antimicrobial agents in comparison with vancomycin and oxacillin.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have emerged as important nosocomial pathogens. CoNS resistance to meticillin and other semisynthetic penicillins is now common. Elevated vancomycin minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) have been reported and are associated with worse treatment outcomes. Several newer antibiotics have recently become available for the treatment of Gram-positive infections. The purpose of this study was to assess the in vitro activity of telavancin, daptomycin, linezolid and tigecycline in comparison with oxacillin and vancomycin against 653 non-duplicate clinical iso

Differences of Microbiomes Found in Non-Inflammatory and Inflammatory Lesions of Acne Vulgaris.

PURPOSE: Bacterial activity and inflammation both influence acne vulgaris (AV) formation. Cutibacterium acnes is considered as an actor involved in inflammation of AV. Besides Cutibacterium acnes, other microbiomes found in AV may also play a role in the pathogenesis. This research was conducted to overview microbiomes found in non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions of AV. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An observational descriptive study with cross-sectional approach was designed. Sample collection was performed with 40 subjects with AV. In every patient, both non-inflammatory (closed comedone) and

[The antibacterial activity of diphenhydramine (author's transl)].

Diphenhydramine (N,N-dimethyl-2-diphenyl-methoxy-ethylamine) [N,N-dimethyl-2-(diphenylmethoxy)-ethylamin] (DPH) is a well-known local anaesthetic and an antagonist of both acetylcholine and histamine. We tested its antibacterial efficacy by means of three different investigation methods, i.e. microcalorimetry, continuous density measurement and the microdilution test to find out the MIC of this compound against various bacteria. DPH inhibits the growth of E. coli and Klebsiella strains at a concentration of 0.18% of Staphylococcus aureus haemolyticus at 0.37%, of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 0.75

Genetic relatedness of coagulase-negative Staphylococci from gastrointestinal tract and blood of preterm neonates with late-onset sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are the first colonizers of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and the commonest cause of late-onset sepsis (LOS) in preterm neonates. Intravascular catheters are considered a major source of CoNS bacteremia. However, several cases of LOS remain without an identified source. To elucidate whether GIT could be a potential source of invasive strains, we aimed to assess the molecular similarity between CoNS from blood and GIT in preterm neonates with LOS. METHODS: Altogether 22 blood and 53 GIT isolates collected from 22 neonates with LOS caused by Co

Molecular Differentiation and Detection of AMR Genes from Nosocomial Staphylococcus spp.

Staphylococcus spp. is a major nosocomial pathogen, particularly affecting immunocompromised patients and infants. It is associated with bacteremia, endocarditis, and co-infections. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococci (MRS) carry the mecA gene, encoding PBP2a, which confers resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. The aim of this study is to investigate resistance profiles and develop a molecular method to identify nosocomial Staphylococcus spp. strains. A total of 64 strains from public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro were analyzed using phenotypic and molecular methods, with 17 classified as MDR.

Staphylococcus hemolyticus: The Most Common and Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus Species Causing Bacteremia in North India.

INTRODUCTION: Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) species are normal skin commensals but may also cause bacteremia. Therefore, isolating a CoNS species on blood culture often leads to a diagnostic dilemma about whether to consider the isolate as a true pathogen or not. This study was done to understand the distribution of various CoNS species in bloodstream infections, determine their antibiotic resistance patterns, and identify possible risk factors and patient outcomes in hospital settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inpatients with confirmed bacteremia defined as isolation of the same CoN
