Changes in peripheral blood leukocyte populations in pigs with naturally occurring exudative epidermitis.

The objective of the study was to analyze changes in peripheral blood leukocyte subsets in cases of naturally occurring exudative epidermitis (EE) in pigs. Five of ten piglets developed the chronic clinical form of EE 2-5 days after weaning (PW). Blood samples were obtained at 7, 14 and 21 days from both normal and clinically affected piglets for routine haematology and for the determination of CD45, CD21, CD4, CD8 and gammadeltaTCR cell markers by flow cytometry. When compared with clinically normal piglets EE affected pigs showed significantly decreased values of monocytes at 14 and 21 days

Identification of staphylococci from bovine mastitis and an examination of their susceptibility to antibiotics and beta-lactamase production.

Strains of Staphylococcus species isolated from bovine mastitic milk at 66 dairy farms in Japan during the period from November 1988 to May 1989 were identified, and examined for their drug susceptibility and beta-lactamase production in order to clarify an epidemiological aspect of bovine mastitis caused by staphylococci. The results of bacteriological identification showed that the most predominant species was S. xylosus. Other major species isolated were S. aureus, S. sciuri and S. hyicus. Thirty-eight (71.7%) isolates of S. xylosus, 21 (45.7%) of S. aureus and 5 (71.4%) of S. epidermidis w

Isolation and Identification of Staphylococcus Species From Mastitic Dairy Cows and Associated Risk Factors in and Around Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Bovine mastitis remains one of the most frequent and costly diseases affecting dairy cattle, with significant impacts on health, welfare, and productivity. Staphylococcus species are among the major pathogens responsible for bovine mastitis, leading to reduced milk yield and posing a potential risk to public health. However, there has been limited research on the specific mastitis-causing pathogens and the risk factors associated with the condition in the study area. Therefore, the objective of this study was to isolate and identify Staphylococcus species associated with bovine mas

Characterization of prevalent bacterial pathogens associated with pododermatitis in table egg layers.

Pododermatitis has been observed in several layer flocks in Denmark during 2015. The aetiology is complex, including litter quality, nutrition and management. Bacterial pathogens associated with pododermatitis, however, have not received much attention. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to identify 106 bacterial isolates obtained from pododermatitis in table egg layers in addition to five isolates from spleen/bursa presternalis. Isolates were obtained from layers from six affected flocks. All isolates were identified by standard bacterial methods, species-specific PCRs, 16S rRNA seq

Dermatoses affecting desmosomes in animals: a mechanistic review of acantholytic blistering skin diseases.

Failure of desmosomal adhesion with ensuing keratinocyte separation - a phenomenon called acantholysis - can result from genetic, autoimmune or infectious proteolytic causes. Rare hereditary disorders of desmosomal formation have been identified in animals. Familial acantholysis of Angus calves and hereditary suprabasal acantholytic mechanobullous dermatosis of buffaloes appear to be similar to acantholytic epidermolysis bullosa of human beings. A genetic acantholytic dermatosis resembling human Darier disease has been rarely recognized in dogs. In autoimmune blistering dermatoses, circulating

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns of Staphylococcus spp. Isolates from Mastitic Cases in Romanian Buffaloes from Western Romania.

Mastitis is defined as mammary gland inflammation and is one of the most common and economically significant diseases affecting dairy cows. Bacteria are the most frequently reported agents responsible for mastitis, while other pathogens are often overlooked due to insufficient routine investigation. Incomplete diagnoses can result in inappropriate antimicrobial treatments, treatment failures, antimicrobial resistance, the spread of pathogens, and the recurrence of mastitis. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the presence of Staphylococcus spp. associated with Romanian buffa

Exudative epidermitis and porcine circovirus-2 infection in a Swedish SPF-herd.

An outbreak of exudative epidermitis (EE) among piglets in a Swedish SPF-herd initiated a survey for indications as to the cause of disease. The herd was established by caesarean section and has been closed to all new animal material, with the exception of semen for artificial insemination (AI). The study comprised serum samples from the SPF-herd over a 10-year period (n=109) and a close monitoring of animals in the herd during the period after the EE outbreak. Serum samples from conventional boars at the AI-station servicing the herd were also included (n=9). All serum samples were tested for

Gram-Positive Bacteria Responses to Antibiotics When Incubated in Fecal in Vitro Microcosms from Swine Supplemented with Chlorophyllin.

Standardized antimicrobial susceptibility assays use defined culture media and may therefore not fully account for gastrointestinal constituents that influence bacterial responses to antibiotics. This study evaluated whether swine fecal extracts, including extracts associated with dietary chlorophyllin supplementation, altered the antimicrobial susceptibility of multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria. Fecal material collected from pigs fed either a non-chlorophyllin or chlorophyllin-supplemented diet was pooled by dietary group, processed to produce clarified fecal extracts, and incorporat

[Diseases of the locomotor apparatus in pigs on commercial farm complexes].

This type of affections concern mainly pigs in the first several days following birth, and rarely pigs up to the age of 15 to 20 days. Their manifestation has a stationary character. They are encountered more frequently and on a mass scale in the winter and spring months. The carpus joints are chiefly affected, whereas the distal joints of the hind legs are much more rarely involved. Detailed epizootiologic, bacteriologic, clinical, haematological, biochemical, and X-ray investigations have been carried out with normal and diseased pigs and the respective sows. The disease process has been fou

Staphylococcal epidermolysins.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Staphylococcal epidermolysins are the major causative toxins of bullous impetigo and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. This disease is characterized by the splitting of the epidermis between two cell layers resulting in exfoliation. It predominantly affects newborn babies and exposes them to secondary infections. This leads to the risk of epidemics, especially in nurseries. With only an experimental model which consists of skin injections in newborn mice and the recent determination of three-dimensional structures, the essential function of these toxins remained controve

Genomic safety, bacteriocinogenic potential, and probiotic-associated traits of Enterococcus lactis LBM-M3D isolated from the swine gastrointestinal tract.

Swine production is vital for global food security; however, its sustainability is threatened by the overuse of antibiotics, which contributes to the emergence and dissemination of multidrug-resistant pathogens. Probiotics and bacteriocin-producing bacteria are promising strategies to support animal health and reduce antibiotic dependence. In this study, Enterococcus lactis LBM-M3D, isolated from the porcine gastrointestinal tract, was evaluated for in vitro antimicrobial activity, tolerance to simulated gastrointestinal conditions, genomic safety features, and bacteriocinogenic potential. Antimicrobial Use, Residues, Resistance and Governance in the Food and Agriculture Sectors, Tanzania.

All infections are potentially curable as long as the etiological agents are susceptible to antimicrobials. The increased rate at which antimicrobials are becoming ineffective is a global health risk of increasing concern that threatens withdrawal of beneficial antimicrobials for disease control. The increased demand for food of animal origin, in particular eggs, meat and milk has led to intensification and commercial production systems where excessive use and misuse of antimicrobials may prevail. Antimicrobials, handled and used by farmers and animal attendants with no formal education, may b

Biofilm formation in Streptococcus suis: in vitro impact of serovars and assessment of coinfections with other porcine respiratory disease complex bacterial pathogens.

Streptococcus suis is a worldwide pathogen that impacts the swine industry, causing severe clinical signs, including meningitis and arthritis, in postweaning piglets. A key virulence mechanism of S. suis is biofilm formation, which improves its persistence and resistance to external factors. Here, we assessed the in vitro biofilm formation of 240 S. suis isolates from Spanish swine farms and evaluated the effects of serovars (SVs) and coinfections with other porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) pathogens. Our study revealed significant heterogeneity in biofilm formation among S. suis SVs
