Prevalence of canine methicillin resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Italy.

The overall prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) was 2% (10/590) among 590 canine specimens submitted to an Italian veterinary diagnostic laboratory during a two-month period, and 21% (10/48) among Staphylococcus intermedius group (SIG) isolates. All methicillin-resistant strains exhibited additional resistance to fluoroquinolones, gentamicin, lincosamides, tetracyclines, and potentiated sulfonamides, belonged predominantly to spa type t02 and harboured SCCmec type II-III cassette.

Comparative study of the microbial profile from bilateral canine otitis externa.

Fifty dogs with bilateral otitis externa were studied over a 10-month period. The exudates of both external ears were obtained, using sterile swabs, and microorganisms were isolated according to standard microbiological techniques. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Staphylococcus intermedius was done by the agar diffusion method. There was bacterial and/or fungal growth in all of the samples. These were all polymicrobial infections. Anaerobic bacteria were not isolated in any sample. The most common pathogens isolated were S. intermedius and Malassezia pachydermatis. A statistically sign

Aspects of nasal, oropharyngeal and anal carriage of in normal dogs and dogs with pyoderma.

Aspects of carriage of Staphylococcus intermedius were studied in three groups of dogs. In 150 normal dogs presenting for annual booster inoculations, carriage rates for S. intermedius in the anterior nares (36%) and on the anal ring (36%) were recorded. In 44 dogs presented for routine elective surgery, carriage of S. intermedius was higher on the caudal nares (41%) than on the anterior nares (34%), oropharynx (25%) or anal ring (30%) allowing an assessment of the accuracy of basing nasal carriage rates on swabbing the anterior nares alone. A new finding was that animals from multidog househo

Pathogens in dog bite wounds in dogs in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Over a year swabs were taken from 87 untreated bite wounds in dogs seen by veterinary practitioners in Harare, Zimbabwe. Swabs were also taken from normal skin adjacent to the wound site, and gingival swabs were collected from normal dogs coming to the same clinics. The swabs were cultured aerobically for pathogens, particularly Staphylococcus intermedius, and the antibiotic sensitivities of the pathogens were determined by disc diffusion assay. The most common pathogens isolated from the wounds were S intermedius (23 per cent), Escherichia coli (18 per cent) and non-lactose-fermenting colifor

Reduced in vitro adherence of Staphylococcus species to feline corneocytes compared to canine and human corneocytes.

It is apparent that in-contact humans and animals exchange commensal staphylococci. Previous in vitro studies, however, indicate that staphylococci preferentially adhere to corneocytes from host species. This study compared adherence of meticillin-sensitive and -resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA/MRSA), S. intermedius, S. felis and S. hominis to feline, canine and human corneocytes acquired from 10 healthy subjects using adhesive tape discs. Adherent bacteria were counted using an image processing and analysis programme. Mean adherence of MSSA (P = 0.0009), MRSA (P = 0.0162) and S. intermed

Microbiological features of Staphylococcus schleiferi subsp. coagulans, isolated from dogs and possible misidentification with other canine coagulase-positive staphylococci.

Staphylococcus schleiferi subsp. coagulans has only rarely been isolated and identified from the external auditory meatus of dogs suffering from external otitis. Its morphological and basic biochemical characteristics are of relatively little value for identification, as it phenotypically resembles another coagulase-positive staphylococci (CPS) and, consequently, may be easily misidentified as S. intermedius or even as S. aureus. In the present work, differentiation of S. schleiferi ssp. coagulans was therefore based on specific biochemical and genetic methods. All the strains were evaluated w

Colonization of the canine skin with bacteria.

Abstract  Aspects of colonization of the canine skin with bacteria are reviewed. Owing to variability in sampling techniques, anatomical sites involved and lack of temporal studies, there is still controversy as to which bacteria are residents or transients on the canine skin. The establishment of the cutaneous flora is determined by the ability of bacteria to adhere to canine corneocytes, to use available nutrients from skin secretions and to resist challenge from competing bacteria. Variations in humidity and temperature due to environment, skin folds or differences in the haircoat are also

Investigation of eye flora in cats infected with Herpesvirus and Calicivirus.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The ocular surface is perpetually exposed to the external environment, rendering it susceptible to microbial contamination. The ocular surface microbiota consists of non-pathogenic microorganisms that inhabit the conjunctiva and cornea. This study's objective was to extensively review the prevalence of bacterial and fungal organisms in the conjunctiva of healthy and diseased cats. (Herpes- and Calici-infected groups). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study was performed on 240 cats that had visited veterinary health centers (Tehran, Iran) for examination. Sterile

How Restrictive Legislation Influences Antimicrobial Susceptibility in Selected Bacterial Isolates from the Canine Vagina.

Antimicrobial stewardship is one of the cornerstones in the battle against antimicrobial resistance. Restrictive legislation aims to foster antimicrobial stewardship. Prophylactic prescription of antimicrobials is still a widespread practice in canine breeding management to prevent suspected infectious infertility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of restrictive legislation in Germany (Veterinary Home Pharmacy Ordinance, TÄHAV) based on resistance profiles of common bacterial isolates from the vaginal tract by comparing the resistance situation before (time frame (TF1)) and a

Pathogenesis and management of wound infections in domestic animals.

Abstract  The pathogenesis of wound infections is largely dependent on adherence mechanisms and toxins. Studies of Staphylococcus intermedins indicate that pyoderma isolates can bind to extracellular matrix proteins exposed in wounds but interpretation of adherence studies is complicated as some organisms possess multiple mechanisms. Studies of blocking and promotion of adherence by antibiotics also show variability. Epidermolytic toxins are recognized in S. aureus and S. hyicus but not in S. intermedins, although a synergohymenotropic toxin has been described and canine syndromes occur where

Reduced antimicrobial prescribing during autogenous staphylococcal bacterin therapy: a retrospective study in dogs with pyoderma.

Autogenous staphylococcal bacterins are commonly mentioned as treatment for canine recurrent pyoderma but little is known about their efficacy. This retrospective study describes use and assesses efficacy of an autogenous Staphylococcus (pseud)intermedius bacterin in dogs with pyoderma. Frequency and duration of systemic antimicrobial therapy were compared 12 months before and after starting bacterin (Wilcoxon signed-rank test) with data extracted from general practice medical histories.

Methicillin resistance of staphylococci isolated from the skin of dogs with pyoderma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the methicillin-resistant profile of staphylococcal isolates from the skin of dogs with pyoderma. ANIMALS: 90 dogs with pyoderma. PROCEDURE: Staphylococci isolated from dogs with pyoderma were tested for susceptibility to methicillin by use of a standard disk diffusion test with oxacillin disks. The DNA extracted from the isolates was tested for the mecA gene that encodes the penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a) by use of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. The expression of PBP2a was determined with a commercial latex agglutination assay. Species of staphylococ

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of staphylococci isolated from the skin surface of clinically normal cats.

Samples were collected from 148 adult cats, processed for isolation of Staphylococcus species and tested for susceptibility to penicillin G, gentamicin, oxacillin, amoxycillin, ampicillin, cephalexin and rifampin. Methicillin resistance was also determined. Ninety-eight isolates were obtained (66% of samples). Coagulase-negative species were most common, and the most frequently isolated species (37 samples) was Staph. felis. Other coagulase-negative species, such as Staph. simulans, Staph. epidermidis and Staph. saprophyticus were also isolated. Coagulase-positive species were obtained from 40

Cephalosporins - pharmacological basis of clinical use in veterinary dermatology.

Cephalosporins form a large group of β-lactam antibiotics which are used extensively in human medicine and to a lesser extent in domestic animals. In veterinary dermatology, the principle use for the cephalosporins is the clinical management of canine pyoderma associated with Staphylococcus intermedius. In practice, the use of orally administered first generation cephalosporin drugs to affected dogs is well tolerated and highly efficacious. Bacterial drug resistance appears to occur rarely.
