Three cases of destructive native valve endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

Described here are three cases of acute native valve endocarditis due to the coagulase-negative pathogen Staphylococcus lugdunensis with serious complications. Two of the three patients died despite optimal antibiotic therapy and cardiovascular surgery. These cases demonstrate the aggressive nature of S. lugdunensis and emphasize the importance of identifying coagulase-negative staphylococci to the species level and not considering the isolation of S. lugdunensis from normally sterile body fluids as contamination. On the contrary, when this organism is found in patients with endocarditis, earl

Staphylococcus lugdunensis infective endocarditis with perforation of the sinus of Valsalva: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis is a rare but fulminant disease. CASE SUMMARY: A 74-year-old female with a history of asymptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis and permanent atrial fibrillation presented with acute onset of fever (39.0°C). Electrocardiogram showed diffuse ST-segment elevation. She was hospitalized for further analysis. All blood cultures were positive for Staphylococcus lugdunensis and antibiotic treatment was started. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) showed known aortic valve stenosis without clear signs of endocarditis. The following day, a transoeso

May Staphylococcus lugdunensis Be an Etiological Factor of Chronic Maxillary Sinuses Infection?

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an opportunistic pathogen found in the healthy human skin microbiome bacterial community that is able to cause infections of diverse localization, manifestation, and course, including laryngological infections, such as necrotizing sinusitis. Chronic maxillary sinusitis is a disease present in up to one third of European and American populations, and its etiology is not fully described. Within this study, we aimed to characterize 18 S. lugdunensis strains recovered from maxillary sinuses and evaluate them as etiological agents of chronic disease. We performed MLST

Recurrent Staphylococcus lugdunensis Osteomyelitis of the Lumbar Spine in a Patient on Chronic Hemodialysis.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an emerging coagulase-negative Staphylococcus regarded as a formidable pathogen capable of causing significant infections at various body sites including bone and joints. We report the case of a Caucasian elderly male with recurrent lumbar osteomyelitis due to S. lugdunensis. He had a history of chronic low back pain. Besides chronic kidney failure and need for hemodialysis, he had no other history of immunosuppression. He did not have fever or leukocytosis; however, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate was elevated, and repeated blood cultures from the periphery an

Right-sided endocarditis from Staphylococcus lugdunensis in a patient with tetralogy of Fallot.

Infective endocarditis is often caused by bacterial pathogens and can affect native and prosthetic tissue. Common pathogens in pediatric patients include Staphylococcus aureus, viridans group streptococci, enterococcal species and coagulase-negative staphylococci, though culture-negative cases are not uncommon. Coagulase-negative staphylococci present a conundrum to clinicians due to the potential of culture contamination. While Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus, it is an emerging cardiotropic pathogen that presents similarly to Staphylococcus aureus. Here we re

Isolated tricuspid valve Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis in patient with a KBG syndrome.

Both KBG syndrome (approximately 50 patients worldwide) and isolated tricuspid valve Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis are very rare entities. The KBG syndrome is a multiple congenital anomaly characterized by short stature, distinctive craniofacial features, and neurologic/developmental/cognitive delay and is only associated to congenital heart defects in 9% of patients. Staphylococcus lugdunesis is an aggressive cause of infective endocarditis. Herein is described a case of a patient presenting both diseases, despite the absence of any known infection, congenital heart defect, heart de

Staphylococcus lugdunensis Infections of the Skin and Soft Tissue: A Case Series and Review.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis) is a coagulase-negative, Gram-positive bacterium that can be isolated as a component of normal skin flora in humans. However, more recently, it has also been documented as a culprit in skin and soft tissue infections. We describe the clinical features of five individuals with S. lugdunensis-associated skin infections. We review the characteristics of other patients that were previously described with this organism as the causative agent of skin infection. METHODS: Staphylococcus lugdunensis was correlated with the development of signif

Fatal myocardial necrosis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis and cytomegalovirus in a patient with scleroderma.

A 42-year-old woman developed a rapidly progressing fatal heart failure. At the autopsy extensive necrosis of the myocardium was seen, with an almost complete absence of inflammatory cells and the presence of bacterial structures identified as Staphylococcus lugdunensis by PCR. In addition, the cytomegalovirus genome was found to be located inside the cardiomyocytes.

Case report of Staphylococcus lugdunensis native valve endocarditis and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Coagulase-negative staphylococci, commonly Staphylococcus epidermidis, cause 5% of native valve endocarditis. We describe a case due to Staphylococcus lugdunensis, a coagulase-negative staphylococcus identified in 1988, as a first report in Southeast Asia. It was previously misidentified as S. aureus because it is sometimes slide coagulase positive, but always tube coagulase negative, resulting in its delayed recognition as a pathogen. We also reviewed 36 other cases reported in the English literature from 1988 to 1999. CLINICAL PICTURE: Our patient was admitted 3 times over 4 m

Destructive endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis. Case report and review of the literature.

A case of highly invasive native valve endocarditis, occurring in a young man with a preexisting cardiac anomaly, and caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis is described. Despite treatment with antibiotics the disease progressed with further growth of the bacterial vegetations and invasion of the myocard. The patient was successfully treated by surgery. Twenty three cases of endocarditis by S. lugdunensis have now been described. This organism is a major cause of destructive endocarditis accompanied by high mortality. As the outcome usually is more favourable in patients who underwent valve repl

Clinical presentation, treatment, and antimicrobial susceptibility of 155 sequential Staphylococcus lugdunensis infections.

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus lugdunensis is known to be virulent, but there are few large-scale epidemiologic studies of this species to define types of infection, susceptibility patterns, and severity. S. lugdunensis isolates from any culture at four U.S. tertiary care hospitals between 1 April 2021 and 1 April 2022 were identified. For the first isolate from each subject, clinical, demographic, and outcome data were recorded. Of 291 isolates, 223 were obtained from a clinically significant infection. Of these 223 isolates, 86 (38.6%) were from monomicrobial cultures; additionally, S. lugdunens

Case-control study of Staphylococcus lugdunensis infection isolates from small companion animals.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus lugdunensis has recently been shown to cause invasive infections of people, which are similar in pathogenic effect to those caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Little is known about the pathogenicity of S. lugdunensis in companion animals. OBJECTIVES: To compare potential risk factors for infection, body sites affected, and whether cases and controls had been treated with antimicrobial drugs based upon susceptibility test results. ANIMALS: Thirty-three cases of S. lugdunensis infection (25 dogs, six cats and two small mammals) were identified betwee

Septic arthritis with Staphylococcus lugdunensis following arthroscopic ACL revision with BPTB allograft.

Septic arthritis following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is an uncommon but a serious complication resulting in six times greater hospital costs than that of uncomplicated ACL surgery and an inferior postoperative activity level. Promptly initiating a specific antibiotic therapy is the most critical treatment, followed by open or arthroscopic joint decompression, debridement and lavage. Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus predominantly infecting the skin and soft tissue. The few reported cases of bone and joint infections by S. lugdunensis indicate tha

Lugdunin production and activity in Staphylococcus lugdunensis isolates are associated with its genotypes.

Lugdunin is active against both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant enterococci by dissipating their membrane potential. However, the association of lugdunin activity with the genotypes of Staphylococcus lugdunensis has not been addressed. Here, we show the high prevalence of lugdunin-producing strains among ST1 (83.3%), ST2 (66.7%), and ST3 (53.3%) S. lugdunensis. Moreover, we identified the antibacterial activity of lugdunin-producing strains against VISA and hVISA. These results shed light on the potential application of lugdunin for the treatment of drug-re

Septic arthritis of native hip joint by Staphylococcus lugdunensis: a case report.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a rare virulent coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS) that behaves similarly to Staphylococcus aureus in causing deep abscesses, skin and soft tissue infections, and central nervous system infections. Additionally, there can be certain blood stream infections including sepsis, septic shock, toxic shock syndrome, and endocarditis complicated by embolic events. Reports of septic arthritis of a native joint associated with this organism have been infrequent, justifying the presentation and discussion of this case.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis with destruction of the ventricular septum and multiple native valves.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis) is a coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS) that can cause destructive infective endocarditis. S. lugdunensis, unlike other CoNS, should be considered to be a pathogen. We report the first case of S. lugdunensis endocarditis causing ventricular septal defect and destruction of the aortic and mitral valves. A 53-year-old male with morbid obesity and COPD presented with intermittent fever and progressive shortness of breath for 2 weeks. Chest examination showed bilateral basal crepitations, and a grade 2 systolic murmur along the right sternal border

[A case of bacterial meningitis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis after surgery].

An 51-year-old man had undergone surgery for Rathke's cleft cyst by transsphenoidal approach on October 2015. After the surgery, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea arose. Surgical treatment of CSF rhinorrhea was performed by the same approach. Ten days after reoperation, he suffered from severe headache, high fever, and nuchal rigidity. CSF findings indicated bacterial meningitis. CSF culture showed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis. He received vancomycin intravenously for 19 days and recovered from the bacterial meningitis with no serious complication.
