Partial Hand Amputations and Prosthetics: Maximizing Intuitive Control.

While partial hand amputations are life-altering events, advances in prosthetic technologies have allowed for great strides in optimizing function of the residual hand. The Starfish procedure has further enhanced the capabilities of myoelectric prosthetics by enabling independent digital manipulation. When coupled with thoughtful nerve and soft tissue management, patients can regain meaningful use in an otherwise devastating injury.

Structural characterization, in vitro anticoagulant, and antiplatelet activities of a Distolasterias nipon dermatan sulfate-like polymer with a distinctive sulfation pattern.

A novel dermatan sulfate-like polysaccharide (DNP) was isolated from the body walls of the starfish Distolasterias nipon. Its structure was elucidated using chemical methods and 2D NMR spectroscopy, revealing a backbone of →4)-α-L-IdopA-(1→3)-β-D-GalpNAc-(1→, with the α-L-iduronic acid residues predominantly 2,3-di-O-sulfated, alongside 2-O- and 3-O-monosulfated variants, and the β-D-GalpNAc residues 4-O-sulfated. Functional assays showed that DNP prolongs thrombin time (TT) comparable to heparin and more potently than enoxaparin (Clexane®), whereas its effect on activated partial thromboplast

First Report of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins in Marine Invertebrates and Fish in Spain.

A paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) episode developed in summer 2018 in the Rías Baixas (Galicia, NW Spain). The outbreak was associated with an unprecedentedly intense and long-lasting harmful algal bloom (HAB) (~one month) caused by the dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum. Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) were analyzed in extracts of 45 A. minutum strains isolated from the bloom by high-performance liquid chromatography with post-column oxidation and fluorescence detection (HPLC-PCOX-FLD). PSTs were also evaluated in tissues from marine fauna (invertebrates and fish) collected during the e

A reference genome for ecological restoration of the sunflower sea star, Pycnopodia helianthoides.

Wildlife diseases, such as the sea star wasting (SSW) epizootic that outbroke in the mid-2010s, appear to be associated with acute and/or chronic abiotic environmental change; dissociating the effects of different drivers can be difficult. The sunflower sea star, Pycnopodia helianthoides, was the species most severely impacted during the SSW outbreak, which overlapped with periods of anomalous atmospheric and oceanographic conditions, and there is not yet a consensus on the cause(s). Genomic data may reveal underlying molecular signatures that implicate a subset of factors and, thus, clarify p

Microbe Profile: Vibrio pectenicida: the deadly marine bacteria with strains impacting sea stars and scallops.

Vibrio pectenicida is a marine Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that exists in coastal waters. First described in 1998, these bacteria are associated with deadly disease outbreaks including sea star wasting disease (SSWD) and high mortality in larval scallops in hatcheries. Multiple strain types exist, and V. pectenicida A365 is associated with mortality in scallop larvae due to vibrio haemocyte-killer toxin. V. pectenicida strain FHCF-3 is associated with SSWD which causes sea stars to 'melt' to death. Current research efforts focus on isolating potential new strai

Transformer based breast cancer classification from histopathological images using sequential residual recurrent multiscale attention network.

Breast cancer is a leading cause of mortality among women globally, highlighting the need for accurate and robust diagnostic systems. This study presents a breast cancer classification based on transformer network (BrCTransNet), a novel deep learning-based framework for breast cancer classification from histopathological images. Initially, input images are preprocessed using an Adaptive Gaussian Bilateral (AGB) filter to reduce noise while preserving essential features. Feature extraction is performed using a Sequential Residual Recurrent Multiscale Attention Network (S2RMANet), which captures

Field experiments predict ecological response to a large-scale epidemic of an anti-keystone pathogen.

Knowledge of how pathogens, in the context of a changing environment, shape the structure of ecological communities remains limited, and little information exists on the ability of small-scale field experiments to predict the consequences of large-scale environmental impacts. We addressed these issues using the emergence of a widespread epidemic (sea star wasting disease, SSWD) on rocky intertidal shorelines. Prior experiments demonstrated strong reductions in sessile species diversity in response to the local experimental removal of the sea star Pisaster ochraceus [R. T. Paine, Am. Nat. 100,

Two decades of change in sea star abundance at a subtidal site in Puget Sound, Washington.

Long-term datasets can reveal otherwise undetectable ecological trends, illuminating the historical context of contemporary ecosystem states. We used two decades (1997-2019) of scientific trawling data from a subtidal, benthic site in Puget Sound, Washington, USA to test for gradual trends and sudden shifts in total sea star abundance across 11 species. We specifically assessed whether this community responded to the sea star wasting disease (SSWD) epizootic, which began in 2013. We sampled at depths of 10, 25, 50 and 70 m near Port Madison, WA, and obtained long-term water temperature data. T

Keystone predation and molecules of keystone significance.

Keystone species structure ecological communities and are major determinants of biodiversity. A synthesis of research on keystone species is nonetheless missing a critical component - the sensory mechanisms for behavioral interactions that determine population- and community-wide attributes. Here, we establish the chemosensory basis for keystone predation by sea stars (Pisaster ochraceus) on mussels. This consumer-resource interaction is prototypic of top-down driven trophic cascades. Each mussel species (Mytilus californianus and M. galloprovincialis) secretes a glycoprotein orthologue (29.6

Post traumatic response of coelomocytes in the common sea star Echinastersepositus.

Regenerative dynamics stem from the coordination of pathways shared with processes of reproduction, post-embryonic development and any tissue mechanisms triggered to reconstitute damaged or lost cells and tissues. In living organisms, following a wound, immune cells are recruited to the injured area to defend against pathogens and promote the structural and functional restoration of the damaged tissue. This repair process is thoroughly investigated in sea stars throughout their development, from the initial repair stages to the actual regenerative phase. In this context, circulating coelomocyt

Marine and synthetic glutamatergic neurotoxins accumulate in and immobilize intertidal sea stars.

Domoic acid (DA) is a naturally occurring amino acid structurally analogous to kainic acid (KA). DA, a neurotoxin commonly associated with toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia species, enters the food chain via filter feeders and poses a potential threat to predators such as sea stars. To assess the presence of DA, wild-collected sea stars (Pisaster ochraceus and Asterias spp.) were analyzed for DA. Although there were no signs of a recent Pseudo-nitzschia bloom prior to collection, both species had low levels of detectable DA, primarily concentrated in the pyloric caeca. DA concentrations in P. ochrace

The dopamine receptor antagonist haloperidol disrupts behavioral responses of sea urchins and sea stars.

Despite lacking a brain and having an apparent symmetrically pentaradial nervous system, echinoderms are capable of complex, coordinated directional behavioral responses to different sensory stimuli. However, very little is known about the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying these behaviors. In many animals, dopaminergic systems play key roles in motivating and coordinating behavior, and although the dopamine receptor antagonist haloperidol has been shown to inhibit the righting response of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, it is not known whether this is specific to this

Swimming sea anemones of Puget Sound: swimming of Actinostola new species in response to Stomphia coccinea.

Swimming as a response of the sea anemone Actinostola new species can be elicited as a result of contact with the submarginal surface of another swimming sea anemone Stomphia coccinea. However, Stomphia does not swim as a result of contact with Actinostola. In all other known respects, swimming is caused in both species by the same stimuli, including certain starfishes, a nudibranch, and electrical stimuli. No agent that causes Actinostola to swim has been detected in extracts, rubbings, or dried matter from Stomphia.

Identification of potential antiviral compounds from Egyptian sea stars against seasonal influenza A/H1N1 virus.

BACKGROUND: One of the most dangerous problems that the world faced recently is viral respiratory pathogens. Marine creatures, including Echinodermata, specially Asteroidea class (starfish) have been extensively studied due to their miscellaneous bioactivities, excellent pharmacological properties, and complex secondary metabolites, including steroids, steroidal glycosides, anthraquinones, alkaloids, phospholipids, peptides, and fatty acids. These chemical constituents show antiviral activities against a wide range of viruses, including respiratory viruses. RESULTS: The present study aimed at

Increased amounts of a high molecular weight insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) peptide and IGF-II messenger ribonucleic acid in pancreatic islets of diabetic Goto-Kakizaki rats.

Insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II), a member of the insulin family, regulates cell growth and differentiation. The IGF-II gene is localized close to the insulin gene in man and rat. IGF-II peptide binds weakly to the insulin receptor and exerts insulin-like effects on the blood glucose level. We studied IGF-II in endocrine pancreas in an animal model of noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, the Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat. At the age of 2 months, these rats have structural islet changes, with fibrosis and irregular configuration, so-called starfish-shaped islets. Immunohistochemical investiga

Identification and functional characterisation of the relaxin-like gonad-stimulating peptide receptor in sea cucumbers.

Relaxin-like gonad-stimulating peptide (RGP) regulates final gamete maturation and spawning in starfish through a specific gonadal receptor, the RGP receptor (RGPR). Homologous RGPs have since been identified in sea cucumbers and shown to induce spawning, supporting a conserved reproductive role across echinoderms. However, the molecular basis of RGP-RGPR signalling in sea cucumbers remained unknown, as the sea cucumber RGPR had not previously been identified. Therefore, we systematically searched for G protein-coupled receptors similar to starfish RGPRs using comparative sequence analysis and

Occurrence, dietary influence and risks of selected trace metals in different coastal predatory species.

The global issue of ongoing trace metal emissions and legacy accumulation from diverse sources is posing threats to coastal wildlife. This study characterized the distribution of five metals in relation to dietary ecology (carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes: δ15N and δ13C) in representative predatory species (starfish, fish, and seabird) collected from the coast of Qingdao, northeastern China. Zinc (Zn) was the most abundant metal across species, followed by copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), total and methylated mercury (THg and MeHg). Among the studied species, black-tailed gulls (La

Evolution of neurohormone function revealed by actions of kisspeptin-type peptides in an echinoderm.

BACKGROUND: The neurohormone kisspeptin regulates reproductive maturation and function in mammals by stimulating hypothalamic production and release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. However, little is known about kisspeptin-type neuropeptide function in invertebrates and the evolution of kisspeptin signalling as a regulator of physiological processes. Here, we address these issues in a deuterostome invertebrate - the starfish Asterias rubens (phylum Echinodermata). RESULTS: Unlike mammals that have one kisspeptin precursor protein, in A. rubens, two precursor proteins (ArKPP1, ArKPP2) give

Hidden genomic structure and widespread structural polymorphism across environmental gradients in the spiny sea star Marthasterias glacialis.

Genomic regions of reduced recombination can preserve linkage among co-adapted alleles, facilitating local adaptation despite high connectivity. Such regions-often generated by chromosomal inversions-may be especially important in highly dispersive marine taxa yet remain poorly documented in echinoderms. Here, we combined a chromosome-level reference genome with genome-wide ddRAD-seq from 296 Marthasterias glacialis individuals across 19 Atlantic-Mediterranean locations to quantify population structure and scan for recombination-suppressed haploblocks. Genome-wide neutral markers showed signif

Behavioural and physiological responses of limpet prey to a seastar predator and their transmission to basal trophic levels.

Besides the well-documented behavioural changes induced by predators on prey, predator-induced stress can also include a suite of biochemical, neurological and metabolic changes that may represent important energetic costs and have long-lasting effects on individuals and on the demography of prey populations. The rapid transmission of prey behavioural changes to lower trophic levels, usually associated with alteration of feeding rates, can substantially change and even reverse direction over the long term as prey cope with the energetic costs associated with predation-induced stress. It is the
