Effects of bite raising and occlusal awareness on tongue thrust in untreated children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of conscious bite (occlusal awareness), with or without immediate bite raising, on tongue thrust during swallowing and speech. A total of 110 untreated children (age range, 7-12 years; mean, 9 years 8 months) were examined with various extraoral and intraoral observation tests. Subjects were divided according to sex and score on the labiolingual dysfunction index (LLDI) into high (LLDI-H) and weak (LLDI-W) dysfunction groups. A special, previously tested chocolate paste was used to map tongue and tooth contacts during task performance, i

Sensory recovery in transplanted toes.

This study reports the results of 30 patients who entered a program of sensory reeducation following toe-to-thumb transfer. Results were analyzed after subdividing the patients into those whose injury had produced severe scarring (fibrotic group, N = 15) and those with clean, more distal amputations (non-fibrotic group, N = 15). Patients who were unable to complete sensory reeducation were considered as "drop-out" controls. Although the follow-up time was less than 1 year, the group receiving sensory reeducation did improve to a greater degree and more quickly than the controls, with the level

Tactile pattern perception and its perturbations.

One of the problems encountered in conveying information to the skin by means of vibratory patterns is that presenting patterns, such as letters of the alphabet, in close spatial and temporal proximity, may result in considerable masking. Generally, there is more interference when the masking stimulus follows the target (backward masking) than when it precedes it (forward masking). Masking has also been demonstrated with vibrotactile patterns derived from speech signals. Masking may be reduced by increasing the temporal and spatial separation between patterns; however, other problems may arise

Specific spatial defect in a child with septo-optic dysplasia.

A blind girl with septo-optic dysplasia was compared with a blind, age-matched control on three spatial tests. Previous observations had suggested a specific spatial learning disorder. Results of the tests showed good verbal intelligence but severe impairment of topographical orientation, route-learning and kinaesthetic memory. It is argued that these dysfunctions were a direct consequence of the malformation syndrome, and could not be accounted for by factors such as sex or congenital blindness.

The right cerebral hemisphere: emotion, music, visual-spatial skills, body-image, dreams, and awareness.

Based on a review of numerous studies conducted on normal, neurosurgical and brain-injured individuals, the right cerebral hemisphere appears to be dominant in the perception and identification of environmental and nonverbal sounds; the analysis of geometric and visual space (e.g., depth perception, visual closure); somesthesis, stereognosis, the maintenance of the body image; the production of dreams during REM sleep; the perception of most aspects of musical stimuli; and the comprehension and expression of prosodic, melodic, visual, facial, and verbal emotion. When the right hemisphere is da…

Evaluation of the neuromotor ability of the tongue in pediatric patients using a stereognostic examination.

BACKGROUND: The term "stereognosis" comes from neurology and describes the capacity to distinguish objects solely by touch. AIM: The aim of this research study was to compare the neuromotor ability of the tongue in patients with malocclusion and tongue dysfunction with and without superficial anesthesia on the tip of the tongue and hard palate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 132 patients aged 6-13 years. Using a spatula for speech therapy and a visual evaluation while swallowing saliva, all individuals were identified as having swallowing dysfunctions and divided into three groups…

[Visual and tactile agnosia].

A patient presented with visual and tactile agnosia due to a spontaneous left occipito-temporal hematoma. Major memory and spatial orientation disorders were also noted, but language, gestures, auditory and olfactory perception, and interior visual imagerie were unaffected. A review of the literature since 1970 found 6 cases of an association of this type among 17 patients with visual agnosia. There appears to be no relationship between the presence of tactile agnosia and the global or partial character of the visual agnosia, the severity of memory disturbances, the presence of visuoverbal dis

Unraveling tactile and proprioceptive upper limb function in children with unilateral cerebral palsy: a combination of robotic and clinical assessments.

PURPOSE: To map somatosensory impairments in the more-impaired and less-impaired upper limb of children with unilateral cerebral palsy (uCP) compared to typically developing children (TDC), using clinical and robotic assessments. Additionally, we explored which subgroups of children with uCP are more likely to experience somatosensory impairments. Tactile registration (Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments), tactile perception (stereognosis, two…

The influence of viewpoint and object detail in blind people when matching pictures to complex objects.

We examined haptic viewpoint effects in blindfolded-sighted (BS) and visually impaired subjects: early blind (EB), late blind (LB), and very low vision (VLV). Participants felt complex objects and matched tangible pictures to them. In experiment 1, the EB and BS subjects had similar overall performance. Experiment 2 showed that the presence of a detail on the target object lowered performance in the BS subjects, and that matching accuracy was lower overall for top views for the blind subjects. In experiments 3-5, EB, LB, VLV, and BS subjects made judgments about perspective pictures of a model

Dissociation apraxia secondary to right premotor stroke.

Apraxia is usually associated with damage to the dominant parietal cortex, but several other areas, including the left dorsolateral frontal cortex and subcortical structures, have also been implicated, suggesting that the praxis system is mediated by an anatomically distributed network. The right premotor frontal cortex is commonly assumed to play a secondary role in this system. We describe a patient who developed left upper limb apraxia after a right premotor ischaemic stroke. The neuropsychological examination ruled out impairment of other cognitive functions, including those subserved by t

Astereognosis and amyotrophy of the hand with neurinoma of the second cervical nerve root.

A case of astereognosis and amyotrophy of the right hand is reported, which was caused by a large extradural neurinoma of the C2 nerve root. The quick and complete recovery which followed surgery suggested a vascular mechanism as the cause of the neurological deficits.

[A case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease presenting with arm levitation as an initial symptom].

A 74-year-old, right handed man, developed insidiously with levitation and clumsiness of the right upper limb. His right arm tended to levitate spontaneously, when he was examined. He could put the elevated arm down on command, while the arm resumed to antigravity posture when his attention was diverted. His right arm also exhibited unwilled elevation when performing complex finger movements on the right side. He had a feeling of strangeness of the elevated limb, especially with the eyes closed. In addition to asymmetric limb-kinetic apraxia, combined sensations such as stereognosis were distu…
