The effect of garlic and stevia extract with aerobic exercise on hypothalamic leptin and ghrelin receptor mRNA expression and insulin resistance in obese rats.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has recently become the most prevalent diet-related disease worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise, stevia, and garlic extract on leptin and ghrelin receptor mRNA, as well as the interactions between insulin and glucose in relation to these genes. METHODS: A total of 50 male Wistar rats were split into two groups: one group was fed regular rodent food, while the other was fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks to induce obesity. The obese rats were then divided into six groups of five (N = 5) based on Lee's index: an obese control group (OC),

Greenhouse evaluation of branching, leaf yield and biochemical compositions of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni to decapitation and foliar application of abscisic acid and fluridone.

Stevia is a herbaceous plant containing non-sugar sweeteners that could be regarded as a successor to sugar for diabetics. However, there are some problems with the cultivation of stevia, especially in the greenhouse, including unbranching and low sweetening agents. To overcome this issue, an experiment was designed to increase not only the branching and leaf production but also the sweetness. Therefore, a novel strategy using abscisic acid (0, 50, 100, 150 μM), its inhibitor, i.e. fluridone (0, 50, 100, 150 μM) and decapitation of plant apical meristems was applied. Results showed that when s

Stevia rebaudiana tea prevents experimental cirrhosis via regulation of NF-κB, Nrf2, transforming growth factor beta, Smad7, and hepatic stellate cell activation.

Stevia has been shown to prevent oxidative stress and inflammation in carbon tetrachloride‐induced cirrhosis models. This study aimed to investigate the ability of an aqueous extract of stevia (AES) to prevent thioacetamide (TAA)‐induced cirrhosis in rats and to explore its mechanism of action. Liver cirrhosis was established by administering TAA (200 mg/kg by i.p. injections three times a week for 10 weeks); AES was administered (100 mg/kg by gavage daily) during the TAA treatment. Liver damage and fibrosis were evaluated, and the profibrotic pathways were analyzed by western blotting and imm

Stevia Extract Improves Skeletal Muscle Metabolism and Mitochondrial Function While Attenuating Muscle Atrophy in Palmitate-Treated C2C12 Myotubes and db/db Mice.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) causes insulin resistance, fat accumulation, and mitochondrial dysfunction in skeletal muscle, leading to muscle atrophy and sarcopenia. This study investigated the effects of stevia extract (SE) on lipid metabolism, mitochondrial activity, and muscle atrophy in both cell and animal models of T2DM. C2C12 cells were treated with palmitic acid to induce insulin resistance, then exposed to different doses of SE (12.5-100 µg/mL). In addition, db/db mice were subjected to skeletal muscle analysis after administration of oral SE (200 or 500 mg/kg/day) for 35 days. SE treatment

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Analysis of the Heavy-Metal ATPase (HMA) Gene Family Reveal Their Correlation with Copper and Cadmium Stress Adaptation in Stevia rebaudiana.

Heavy-metal ATPase (HMA) is widely involved in the absorption and transport of metal elements, including copper, zinc, and cadmium in plants. Although the characterization of HMA has been conducted in several plants, the research on the HMA gene in Stevia rebaudiana remains limited. In this study, twelve SrHMA genes were identified, encoding stable proteins mostly localized to the plasma membrane and possessing conserved E1-E2_ATPase and hydrolase domains, with one to three N-terminal HMA domains. Phylogenetic analysis classified them into two subfamilies (Zn/Co/Cd/Pb and Cu/Ag P1B-ATPases). T

Improving the antiprotozoal effect of saponins in the rumen by combination with glycosidase inhibiting iminosugars or by modification of their chemical structure.

The antiprotozoal effect of saponins is transitory, as when saponins are deglycosylated to sapogenins by rumen microorganisms they become inactive. We hypothesised that the combination of saponins with glycosidase-inhibiting iminosugars might potentially increase the effectiveness of saponins over time by preventing their deglycosylation in the rumen. Alternatively, modifying the structure of the saponins by substituting the sugar moiety with other small polar residues might maintain their activity as the sugar substitute would not be enzymatically cleaved. The aim of this in vitro study was t

Effect of different sweeteners on the quality, fatty acid and volatile flavor compounds of braised pork.

This study aimed to assess how several sweeteners (white sugar, Siraitia grosvenorii fruit, mogrosides, and stevia glycoside) affected the flavor, fatty acid composition, and quality of braised pork. The findings indicated that braised meat prepared with sweeteners differed from typical braised pork. When simmered for 60 min, the typical braised pork with white granulated sugar exhibited a significant cooking loss (CL) and little water content. Significantly more than in the group containing Siraitia grosvenorii, mogroside, and stevia glycoside, the Thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) value increased
