Effects of Wearing Compression Stockings on the Physical Performance of T2DM Men with MetS.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are associated with macro- and microcirculatory complications that reduce physical performance. Wearing compression garments to potentially optimize hemodynamics has been discussed. This study investigates the effects of wearing compression stockings on physical performance-related variables in type 2 diabetic men with metabolic syndrome (n=9, 57±12 years, BMI: 36±4 kg/m(2)). Participants served as their own controls in a randomized 3*3 crossover study wearing below-knee stockings with either compression (24 or 30 mmHg ankle pressur

Using Compression Stockings to Prevent Recurrence of Vasovagal Syncope: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Vasovagal syncope (VVS) is a common yet challenging condition with limited effective treatments. Elastic compression stockings (ECS) have been proposed as a potential therapy, but their real-world effectiveness remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare the effectiveness of lower extremity compression with thigh-high ECS vs sham stockings for the prevention of VVS recurrence. METHODS: This multicenter, parallel, blinded, randomized sham-controlled trial enrolled adults 18 to 65 years of age with ≥2 VVS episodes in the past year. Participants were randomized 1:1 to

Compression Stockings for the Prevention of Venous Leg Ulcer Recurrence: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: People with chronic venous insufficiency who develop leg ulcers face a difficult condition to treat. Venous leg ulcers may persist for long periods of time and have a negative impact on quality of life. Treatment requires frequent health care provider visits, creating a substantial burden across health care settings. The objective of this health technology assessment was to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, cost-effectiveness, budget impact, and patient experiences of compression stockings for prevention of venous leg ulcer recurrence. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of

Graded compression stockings for prevention of deep-vein thrombosis after hip and knee replacement.

We performed a prospective, randomised controlled trial in 177 patients who were having either total hip or knee replacement, to evaluate the use of both above- and below-knee graded compression stockings in the prevention of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). With above-knee stockings, we found no significant reduction of the overall, proximal or major calf (> 5 cm) DVT rates. With below-knee stockings, the overall thrombosis rate was similar to that of the control group but the stockings appeared to have altered the pattern of thrombosis. Patients who had total hip replacement and wore below-knee s

Inelastic compression legging produces gradient compression and significantly higher skin surface pressures compared with an elastic compression stocking.

The purposes of this study were to (1) investigate compression levels beneath an inelastic legging equipped with a new pressure-adjustment system, (2) compare the inelastic compression levels with those provided by a well-known elastic stocking, and (3) evaluate each support's gradient compression production. Eighteen subjects without venous reflux and 12 patients with previously documented venous reflux received elastic and inelastic compression supports sized for the individual. Skin surface pressures under the elastic (Sigvaris 500, 30-40 mm Hg range, Sigvaris, Inc., Peachtree City, GA) and

Graded compression stockings in elective orthopaedic surgery. An assessment of the in vivo performance of commercially available stockings in patients having hip and knee arthroplasty.

We recruited 89 patients who had hip or knee replacements to assess the performance of below-knee graded compression stockings. The pressure gradients generated by the stockings were measured and all patients had venography of the ipsilateral leg. We found that 98% of stockings failed to produce the 'ideal' pressure gradient (+/- 20%) of 18, 14 and 8 mmHg from the ankle to the knee, while 54% produced a 'reversed gradient' on at least one occasion during the course of the study. The overall rate of deep-venous thrombosis was 16.7%. Stockings which produced reversed gradients were associated wi

Graduated compression stockings for the initial treatment of varicose veins in people without venous ulceration.

BACKGROUND: Compression hosiery or stockings are often the first line of treatment for varicose veins in people without either healed or active venous ulceration. Evidence is required to determine whether the use of compression stockings can effectively manage and treat varicose veins in the early stages. This is the second update of a review first published in 2011. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of compression stockings for the only and initial treatment of varicose veins in people without healed or active venous ulceration. SEARCH METHODS: For this update, the Cochrane Vascular I

The efficacy of pneumatic compression stockings in the prevention of pulmonary embolism after cardiac surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumatic compression stocking (PCS) devices have been introduced to decrease the incidence of postoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT). However, their role in the prophylaxis against pulmonary embolism (PE) remains unclear. This study was undertaken to compare the prophylactic effectiveness of subcutaneous heparin (SCH) alone vs the combined use of PCS and SCH in the prevention of PE following cardiac surgery. METHODS: We studied 2,551 consecutive patients who underwent cardiac surgery over a 10-year period. They were randomly allocated to two groups. Group A included 1,196 p

Economic evaluation of compression stockings for the prevention of venous leg ulcer recurrence in Ontario.

OBJECTIVE: Approximately between 1.5 and 3.0 per 1000 people are affected by venous leg ulcers (VLUs). The treatment and management of VLUs is costly and recurrence is a major concern. There is evidence that compression stockings can reduce the rate of re-ulceration compared with no compression. We present the first cost-effective analysis of compression stockings in preventing recurrence of VLUs from the perspective of the Ontario healthcare system. METHOD: A cost-utility analysis with a five-year time horizon was conducted. Use of compression stockings was compared with usual care (no compr

Compression stockings significantly improve hemodynamic performance in post-thrombotic syndrome irrespective of class or length.

BACKGROUND: Graduated elastic compression (GEC) stockings have been demonstrated to reduce the morbidity associated with post-thrombotic syndrome. The ideal length or compression strength required to achieve this is speculative and related to physician preference and patient compliance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hemodynamic performance of four different stockings and determine the patient's preference. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive patients (40 legs, 34 male) with post-thrombotic syndrome were tested with four different stockings (Mediven plus open toe, Bayreuth, Germany) o
