The Health Profile of Street Children in Africa: A Literature Review.

The United Nations Children's Fund has labeled street children as children in difficult circumstances, which represent a minority population that has been under-represented for too long in health research. This is a concern because street children are at risk of carrying a greater disease burden. Their homeless lifestyle makes them more vulnerable to health risks and problems than children who live at home; as they roam the streets begging for food and money to obtain basic needs and are found sleeping in half-destroyed houses, abandoned basements, under bridges and in the open air. This paper

Supersized America: help your patients regain control of their weight.

With 64-ounce sodas and "supersized" fast food on nearly every street corner, America has become the land of the obese. Despite disheartening statistics regarding the success of weight-loss plans, patients are more likely to take steps to lose weight if encouraged to do so by their primary care physician.

Bringing Medical Care to the Streets: Lessons Learned in Launching a Street Medicine Outreach.

BACKGROUND: Street Medicine, where healthcare is provided in non-traditional settings, provides care to people experiencing homelessness (PEH). Street medicine has been shown to improve patients' health and decrease Emergency Department visits, making it a cost effective way to provide medical care to PEH. METHODS: This paper is based on the SAEM25 didactic session as conducted in Philadelphia, where a panel of providers who are directly involved in street medicine clinics shared their experiences and perspectives on the various designs in practice. These topics included key logistical challe

Urban environment exposures, energy balance-related behaviors and their combination in preschoolers from three European countries.

BACKGROUND: Urban environments are characterized by many factors that may influence children's energy balance-related behaviors (EBRBs), but there is limited research on the impact of prospective exposure to multiple urban factors in preschoolers. We evaluated prospective associations between various urban exposures and EBRBs in preschoolers across Europe, with EBRBs considered both individually and combined into lifestyle patterns. METHODS: We used data from 4,073 preschoolers (aged 3-4 years) participating in three European cohorts from the EU Child Cohort Network: BiB (United Kingdom), EDE

Prevention of traveler's diarrhea.

Preventing traveler's diarrhea is usually a matter of common sense, good luck, and the host's ability to defend against enteric pathogens, particularly enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. Untreated tap water, ice cubes, unpasteurized milk products, salads, food from street vendors, and dining in unhygienic-appearing restaurants should be avoided. Well-cooked food that is served hot and carbonated, commercially bottled beverages are usually safe. Food and water precautions, however, are no guarantee of success in preventing traveler's diarrhea. Bismuth subsalicylate used prophylactically is somew

Nutritional needs, resources, and barriers among unhoused adults cared for by a street medicine organization in Chicago, Illinois: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Those experiencing houselessness rely on obtaining food from community organizers and donations. Simultaneously, the houseless face disproportionally high rates of medical conditions that may be affected by diet including diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. There is limited literature on the resources and barriers of the houseless community regarding optimal nutrition from an actionable perspective. Further, less data is available on how street medicine organizations may best impact the nutrition of the unhoused they serve. Elucidating this information will inform how organ

Persistent organic pollutants and metals in atmospheric depositions at an urban site in Rome, Italy: Deposition fluxes and dust-normalized concentrations.

Atmospheric deposition is one of the main routes by which persistent pollutants are transferred from the air to the soil and subsequently into the food chain, with potential impacts on human health. This study investigated atmospheric deposition of persistent pollutants at an urban site in Rome (ISS building), Italy, with particular attention to pollutant deposition fluxes (pg, ng or μg m-2 d-1) normalized to the collected sedimentable particulate matter (pg, ng or μg mg-1 SPM), and comparison between street and roof-level samples. Monthly samples were collected from 1/08/2023 to 31/08/2024 us

Understanding Food Insecurity in Westminster, UK: A Community-Informed Systems Thinking Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is increasing in the United Kingdom and is a growing public health concern. In Westminster, a highly diverse London borough, rates continue to rise in the most deprived areas, such as the Church Street ward, despite increasing food support and local policies. METHODS: This study used a community-informed systems thinking approach to understand the local dynamics. 26 stakeholders from 6 local services participated in group model-building (GMB) workshops and interviews to provide insight into how services and policies interact with the structural drivers of food in

Consumption of antioxidant-rich foods attenuates respiratory and cardiovascular health effects in a population highly exposed to air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Diet and nutrition have shown promise in attenuating air pollution health effects. However, to date, no study has been conducted in an occupationally exposed population who experience high levels of very complex air pollution mixtures on a daily basis. OBJECTIVES: We therefore evaluated the effectiveness of regular consumption of antioxidant-rich foods in attenuating respiratory and cardiovascular health effects among street vendors in Accra, Ghana. METHODS: We used a quasi-experimental design of 12-month duration, assigning 307 street vendors to either an intervention group (n =

Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from tilapia and utensils used in the commerciali- zation of tilapia in the street markets of a semi-arid Brazilian municipality.

BACKGROUND: The production and commercialization of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is fundamentally important to the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. In this region, one of the main forms of commercialization occurs in street markets (fairs). A high incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains was previously detected in different food-related environments in Brazil. However, limited data is available about the presence of MRSA in street markets commercializing tilapias. In this study, we identified Staphylococcus aureus from tilapia and utensils used in the

Exploring the Practices of Healthcare Practitioners During the Implementation of a Healthy Eating Policy.

Health promotion policy is an effective way to improve population health and reduce the burden of chronic disease, yet how implementation of health promotion at policy levels occurs within healthcare remains unclear. Healthcare organizations, on the one hand, aim to improve population health and 'upstream' health determinants through the Quintuple Aim, but, on the other, are complex and dynamic organizations, with a particular emphasis on downstream clinical care services. Many types of practitioners interpret health promotion policies within the healthcare setting and must implement them in t

Antibiotic Residues in Milk from Three Popular Kenyan Milk Vending Machines.

Milk vending machines (MVMs) are growing in popularity in Kenya and worldwide. Milk vending machines dispense varying quantities of locally sourced, pasteurized milk. The Kenya Dairy Board has a regulatory framework, but surveillance is weak because of several factors. Milk vending machines' milk is not routinely screened for antibiotics, thereby increasing potential for antibiotic misuse. To investigate, a total of 80 milk samples from four commercial providers (N = 25), street vendors (N = 21), and three MVMs (N = 34) were collected and screened in Eldoret, Kenya. Antibiotic residue surveill

Identification of the factors influencing speeding behaviour of food delivery e-bikers in China with the naturalistic cycling data.

With the rapid growth of the gig economy in China, millions of food delivery e-bikers are making their living by rushing on the street. Speeding is one of their most common risky riding behaviours, leading to severe traffic crashes. Based on 2-month naturalistic cycling data of 46 full-time food delivery e-bikers in Changsha, their speeding behaviour is deeply studied with the individual daily speeding proportion being taken as the speeding indicator. A beta regression model is built to identify the factors significantly influencing the indicator. The estimation results reveal that female ride

HIV prevention in street youth.

Homeless adolescents have remained an underserved population throughout the human immunodeficiency/acquired immune deficiency syndrome epidemic. This article reviews the recent literature investigating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk behavior among street youth. Prevalence rates of both adolescent homelessness and HIV seropositivity are unknown. However, data from a number of samples document a high prevalence of HIV risk behavior, sexually transmitted diseases, and alcohol/drug use among homeless adolescents. A number of individual and social factors, often associated with street surv
