Influence of Helicobacter pylori Infection and Atrophic Gastritis on the Gut Microbiota in a Japanese Population.

BACKGROUND: Although infection with Helicobacter pylori and subsequent atrophic gastritis modulate the gastric conditions, their relationship with the gut microbiota in -Japanese population has not been clearly characterized. METHODS: A cohort of 1,123 subjects who participated in a health survey was studied. Infection of H. pylori was defined by both serum antibody and stool antigen test. The presence and severity of atrophic gastritis were defined by serum levels of pepsinogens. The relative abundance of each bacterial species in fecal samples was calculated by using 16S ribosomal RNA ampli

Genomic characterization and preclinical evaluation of the candidate probiotic strain Lactococcus cremoris FBMS_5810.

This study presents a comprehensive genomic and preclinical evaluation of Lactococcus cremoris FBMS_5810, establishing its taxonomic identity, genomic uniqueness, and safety profile. Genomic analyses identified strain-specific genes linked to adhesion, colonization, and pathogen exclusion, aligning with previously observed in vitro probiotic properties. In vivo studies in healthy mice demonstrated that Lactococcus cremoris FBMS_5810 modulates gut microbiota composition. Specifically, the relative abundance of Muribaculaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Streptococcaceae was significantly increased

Alteration of the airway microbiota is associated with the progression of post-COVID-19 chronic cough in adults: a prospective study.

Cough is one of the most common symptoms observed in patients presenting with COVID-19, persisting for an extended duration following SARS-CoV-2 infection. We aim to describe the distribution of airway microbiota and explore its role in patients with post-COVID-19 chronic cough. A total of 57 patients experiencing persistent cough after infection were recruited during the Omicron wave of SARS-CoV-2 in China. Airway microbiota profiling is assessed in nasopharyngeal swab, nasal lavage, and induced sputum samples at 4 and 8 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our findings reveal that bacterial fam

An in vitro analysis of how lactose modifies the gut microbiota structure and function of adults in a donor-independent manner.

INTRODUCTION: Following consumption of milk, lactose, a disaccharide of glucose and galactose, is hydrolyzed and absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract. However, hydrolysis and absorption are not always absolute, and some lactose will enter the colon where the gut microbiota is able to hydrolyze lactose and produce metabolic byproducts. METHODS: Here, the impact of lactose on the gut microbiota of healthy adults was examined, using a short-term, in vitro strategy where fecal samples harvested from 18 donors were cultured anaerobically with and without lactose. The data were compiled to

Associations among the genome, rumen metabolome, ruminal bacteria, and milk production in early-lactation Holsteins.

A multicenter observational study to evaluate genome-wide association was conducted in early-lactation Holstein cows (n = 293) from 36 herds in Canada, the USA, and Australia. Phenotypic observations included rumen metabolome, acidosis risk, ruminal bacterial taxa, and milk composition and yield measures. Diets ranged from pasture supplemented with concentrates to total mixed rations (nonfiber carbohydrates = 17 to 47, and neutral detergent fiber = 27 to 58% of dry matter). Rumen samples were collected <3 h after feeding and analyzed for pH, ammonia, d- and l-lactate, volatile fatty acid (VFA)

The contribution of intestinal Streptococcus to the pathogenesis of diabetic foot ulcers: An analysis based on 16S rRNA sequencing.

In this study, we intend to determine the microbial communities that are differentially expressed in diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) from the view of species abundance difference and compositions. The EMBL-EBI database and QIIME2 platform were used to obtain and process 16S rRNA sequencing data of normal healthy and DFU samples. The LEfSe software was utilised to retrieve key intestinal bacteria differentially expressed in DFUs. Additionally, PICRUSt2, FAPROTAX and BugBase functional analyses were performed to analyse the potential microbial functions and related metabolic pathways. The correlatio

Gastric microbiota composition in patients with corpus atrophic gastritis.

BACKGROUND: In corpus atrophic gastritis (CAG), hypochlorhydria makes plausible the overgrowth of intragastric bacteria, whose role in gastric carcinogenesis is under debate. AIMS: To characterize the antrum/corpus composition of the gastric bacterial microbiota in CAG patients compared to controls without CAG. METHODS: A cross-sectional monocentric study on consecutive patients with known histological diagnosis of CAG undergoing gastroscopy for gastric cancer surveillance and patients without CAG undergoing gastroscopy for dyspepsia or anemia (108 biopsies from 55 patients, median age 61.5)

A Multi-Omics Protocol for Swine Feces to Elucidate Longitudinal Dynamics in Microbiome Structure and Function.

Swine are regarded as promising biomedical models, but the dynamics of their gastrointestinal microbiome have been much less investigated than that of humans or mice. The aim of this study was to establish an integrated multi-omics protocol to investigate the fecal microbiome of healthy swine. To this end, a preparation and analysis protocol including integrated sample preparation for meta-omics analyses of deep-frozen feces was developed. Subsequent data integration linked microbiome composition with function, and metabolic activity with protein inventories, i.e., 16S rRNA data and expressed

Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola, two frequently misidentified uropathogens.

Species belonging to the Aerococcus genus are isolated from the urine and blood of elderly patients suffering from urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, the clinical significance, phenotypic features and antimicrobial susceptibilities of these underestimated and/or misidentified species remain unclear. From March 2006 to November 2008, among 350 non-enterococcal Streptococcaceae species isolated from urinary specimens, 30 (8.6%) Aerococcus spp. strains were recovered. All strains were characterized using a phenotypic approach (API 20 STREP, ID 32 STREP and VITEK 2 systems), 16S rRNA gene s

Alterations in gut microbiota and metabolites associated with altitude-induced cardiac hypertrophy in rats during hypobaric hypoxia challenge.

The gut microbiota is involved in host responses to high altitude. However, the dynamics of intestinal microecology and their association with altitude-related illness are poorly understood. Here, we used a rat model of hypobaric hypoxia challenge to mimic plateau exposure and monitored the gut microbiome, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and bile acids (BAs) over 28 d. We identified weight loss, polycythemia, and pathological cardiac hypertrophy in hypoxic rats, accompanied by a large compositional shift in the gut microbiota, which is mainly driven by the bacterial families of Prevotellaceae

Distribution patterns of antibiotic resistance genes and their bacterial hosts in pig farm wastewater treatment systems and soil fertilized with pig manure.

Vast reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) are discharged into the environment via pig manure. We used metagenomic analysis to follow the distribution and shifts of ARGs and their bacterial hosts along wastewater treatment in three large pig farms. The predominating ARGs potentially encoded resistance to tetracycline (28.13%), aminoglycosides (23.64%), macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin (MLS) (12.17%), sulfonamides (11.53%), multidrug (8.74%) and chloramphenicol (6.18%). The total relative ARG abundance increased along the treatment pathway prior to anaerobic digestion that had a si

[Some features of tonsillar microflora and microbial interaction (in normal and pathological states)].

The description of a new method for the determination of interaction between bacterial strains isolated from the mucous membrane of tonsils of healthy children and patients with chronic tonsillitis. In the analysis of mutual influence of symbionts on the hemolytic, lecitovitellase, lysozyme and antilysozyme activity of microbes isolated from healthy children no changes in the expression of these pathogenicity and persistence factors have been detected in the overwhelming majority of cases (70.8-89.9%). In the microflora of sick children interactions were synergic with respect to pathogenicity

Structure of the Gut and Ovary, with Associated Microbiota Across Life Stages in the Striped Stem Borer Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

The striped stem borer Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the most serious pests of water bamboo Zizania latifolia. Microbiota dynamics across the life cycle of C. suppressalis are a prerequisite for comprehending the symbiotic relationship between C. suppressalis and its microbiota. In this study, we characterized the structural features of the gut and ovary, as well as the associated microbiota of C. suppressalis. The gut is anatomically divided into the foregut, midgut and hindgut. Notable structural and ultrastructural differences were observed between adults and larvae,

Causal Relationship Between Gut Microbiota, Metabolites, and Sarcopenia: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota imbalance and sarcopenia are frequently observed in older adults. Gut microbiota and their metabolites are considered risk factors contributing to the heightened risk of sarcopenia, but whether these associations are causal remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted linkage disequilibrium score regression and 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) methods with single-nucleotide polymorphisms sourced from large-scale genome-wide association studies as instrumental variables to examine the causal associations linking gut microbiota with their metabolites to the sarcopenia.

Unveiling the Pathogenic Bacteria Causing Descending Necrotizing Mediastinitis.

The combination of maxillofacial infections (MI) with descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) is a complex disease characterized by rapid development and high mortality. Here, we performed metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) using samples from 21 patients with MI and eight patients with DNM. In this study, we found that the species richness of the DNM group was higher than that of the MI group, and the species diversity of the DNM group was higher than that of the MI group, with no statistically significant differences between groups (P > 0.05). LefSE analysis revealed that the ma
