Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus; GBS) is an important human pathogen causing pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis in neonates, as well as infections in pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly. For the future control of GBS-inflicted disease, GBS surface exposed proteins are particularly relevant as they may act as antigens for vaccine development and/or as serosubtype markers in epidemiological settings. Even so, the genes encoding some of the surface proteins established as serosubtype markers by antibody-based methods, like the R3 surface protein, are still

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus agalactiae is the leading cause of bacterial sepsis and meningitis in newborns and results in pneumonia and bacteremia in adults. A number of S. agalactiae components are involved in colonization of target cells. Destruction of peptidoglycan and division of covalently linked daughter cells is mediated by autolysins. In this study, autolytic activity and plasma binding ability of AFb novel recombinant protein of S. agalactiae was investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The gbs1805 gene was cloned and expressed. E. coli strains DH5α and BL21 were used as cl

Streptococcus agalactiae is a contagious pathogen in bovine mastitis. It is also one of the leading causes to neonatal pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis in Europe and North America. Although extracellular bacterial proteins that interact with host structures are putative vaccine components, so far only a few receptins have been identified and characterised from this organism. The aim of the present study was to identify fibrinogen-binding receptins from a shotgun phage display library constructed from the bovine type strain CCUG 4208. A novel extracellular receptin was identified after selectin

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is an important pathogen of bacterial meningitis in neonates. We aimed to investigate the clinical and genetic characteristics of neonatal GBS meningitis. All neonates with GBS meningitis at a tertiary level medical center in Taiwan between 2003 and 2020 were analyzed. Capsule serotyping, multilocus sequence typing, antimicrobial resistance, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) were performed on the GBS isolates. We identified 48 neonates with GBS meningitis and 140 neonates with GBS sepsis. Neonates with GBS meningitis had significantly more

Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as group B Streptococcus, is a species of bacteria occasionally detected in the vagina and/or rectum of pregnant women. This report describes the case of a 33-year-old woman who developed infective endocarditis on puerperal day 17, owing to group B Streptococcus, and required lifesaving surgery. The patient was rushed to our hospital with chief complaints of fever and fatigue. After hospitalization, antibiotics were administered; however, the symptoms did not improve. Following a detailed examination, vegetation was found in the heart, suggestive of infecti

We herein describe the case of a 27-day-old male infant who was brought to the emergency room for intermittent crying, and swelling of the left scrotum. Based on the clinical findings, necrotizing fasciitis was suspected, and surgical intervention was successfully completed within a few hours of admission. Streptococcus agalactiae type Ia was cultured from the drained abscess, and was considered the causative pathogen. To our knowledge, this is the first report of neonatal necrotizing fasciitis caused by S. agalactiae. Prompt diagnosis and immediate surgical debridement are crucial in the init

Streptococcus agalactiae is a well-known pathogen during pregnancy and in neonates. Among non-pregnant adults, invasive infection, although rare, is showing increasing frequency, especially in chronically ill, immunosuppressed, or older patients. Although rare, the clinical features of meningeal infection caused by S. agalactiae are similar to other bacterial meningitis. The authors report the case of a middle-aged man previously diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and alcoholic liver cirrhosis, who was admitted at the emergency department with a Glasgow Coma Scale of 11/12, genera

Streptococcus agalactiae is the leading cause of bacterial sepsis and meningitis in neonates and is also the causative agent of several serious infections in immunocompromised adults. S. agalactiae encounters multiple niches during an infection, suggesting that regulatory mechanisms control the expression of specific virulence factors in this bacterium. The present study describes the functional characterization of a gene from S. agalactiae, designated rga, which encodes a protein with significant similarity to members of the RofA-like protein (RALP) family of transcriptional regulators. After

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of colonization by Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnant women at term.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study. Four hundred thirty three pregnant patients at term without data of cervicovaginitis were included. We processed vaginal and rectal swabs with hisopo placed in the Stuart middle of transport. They were inoculated on blood agar with nalidixic acid and gentamicine incubating itself by duplicate on Todd-Hewitt broth. The samples with suggestive result were reincubating to detect suspicious Streptococcus using the CAMP test, fo

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women colonized by Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococci [GBS]) may transfer this microorganism to their newborns. S. agalactiae is an important cause of pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis in newborns. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) is considered as a method of identification in the field of diagnostic microbiology. In this paper, we have designed a study to compare the DNA FISH after 7 h Lim broth enrichment and culturing for the identification of S. agalactiae and to determine the prevalence of vaginal colonization by S. agalactiae among pregnant women

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae can produce CAMP factor, which can promote the β-hemolysin activity of Staphylococcus aureus, forming an arrow-shaped hemolysis enhancement zone at the intersection of the two bacterial species on a blood agar plate. This characteristic feature of Streptococcus agalactiae has led to the widespread use of the CAMP test as an identification method.
METHODS: Vaginal/rectal swabs, collected from women at 35-37 weeks of pregnancy, were first inoculated into a selective enrichment broth media, then subcultured onto GBS chromogenic agar and 5% sheep blood agar s

Streptococcus agalactiae is well known to be a potential etiology of bacterial meningitis in neonates. Invasive S. agalactiae has been also reported in nonpregnant adults. Among adults, the incidence of invasive group B Streptococcus (GBS) has been increasing 2-4 times in the past 2 decades. Chronic medical disease was suspected to increase the susceptibility for invasive GBS, especially diabetes mellitus. There was only one case reported to have GBS meningitis from acute otitis media infection in otherwise healthy individual. Hereby, we are reporting the second invasive GBS meningitis from ac

Bacterial meningitis is a serious life threatening infection of the CNS. To cause meningitis, blood-borne bacteria need to interact with and penetrate brain endothelial cells (BECs) that comprise the blood-brain barrier. BECs help maintain brain homeostasis and they possess an array of efflux transporters, such as P-glycoprotein (P-gp), that function to efflux potentially harmful compounds from the CNS back into the circulation. Oftentimes, efflux also serves to limit the brain uptake of therapeutic drugs, representing a major hurdle for CNS drug delivery. During meningitis, BEC barrier integr

During 2006 through 2012, spontaneous group B Streptococcus infections were reported in 22 female KK-Ay mice, an animal model of type 2 diabetes. The affected mice were 5 to 27 wk old, and the cases involved various body sites, including cases of submandibular, caudal, and lumbar abscesses (n =18) or led to torticollis (n = 2), hydrocephalus (n = 1), or moribund clinical signs (n = 1). At necropsy, the mouse with hydrocephalus also demonstrated retained exudate in the uterus, and the moribund mouse showed renal inflammation. Streptococcus agalactiae was isolated in pure culture from all except

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae [group B streptococcus (GBS)] is a well-known cause of invasive infections leading to sepsis and meningitis in neonates. A comprehensive nationwide active surveillance study over 2 years was performed in Germany to describe the molecular epidemiology among 296 invasive neonatal GBS isolates.
METHODS: Isolates were typed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Typing results were compared with serotypes as well as to clinical data on disease onset, meningitic involvement, and outcome.
RESULTS: A remarkable clustering was found with about 60% of all typ

We report a case of severe recurrent erysipelas of the breast due to infection with Streptococcus agalactiae and demonstrate that strains isolated from the skin were closely related to strains isolated from the vagina, which is consistent with the claim that the vagina acts as a reservoir for S. agalactiae isolates that are responsible for erysipelas relapse. Hypervirulence of strains and persistence of a bacterial reservoir may explain why 5 months of prophylaxis with penicillin V (1 million U daily) was necessary to achieve permanent eradication of vaginal carriage and to prevent recurrence

Bacteremia can result very unusually in significant complications after esophageal dilation. Procedure-related mucosal trauma may be a determinant, whereas pathogenic bacteria primarily originate from the patient's oropharyngeal flora. We describe an unusual case of Streptococcus agalactiae bacteremia and shoulder girdle abscess complicating esophageal bougienage. Consideration of specific risk factors and use of scrupulous procedural technique are warranted and will likely reduce pyogenic sequelae.
