[A case report of gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the small intestine presenting with liver abscesses caused by Streptococcus constellatus].

A 49-year-old woman visited a local hospital in October 2007 with complaint of fever and melena. Abdominal ultrasonography and abdominal computed tomography revealed an irregular mass in the lower abdomen, together with multiple masses in the liver. She was admitted because of anemia, and the high fever was determined to be an inflammatory response. Blood tests revealed elevated biliary enzyme levels. Percutaneous biopsy of the liver mass was performed, which revealed liver abscesses caused by Streptococcus constellatus. On abdominal angiography, the mass was suspected to be a tumor of the sma

Polymicrobial Pyogenic Liver Abscess Without Classical Risk Factors: A Case Report of Streptococcus constellatus and Fusobacterium nucleatum Infection.

Pyogenic liver abscesses are uncommon, often polymicrobial, and can be fatal if left untreated, with a mortality rate of 5-15%. Established risk factors include diabetes mellitus, hepatobiliary disease, malignancy, recent abdominal surgery, and immunosuppression. This case report describes a 69-year-old female who developed a large hepatic abscess despite lacking traditional predisposing risk factors. The patient is a 69-year-old female, generally healthy with only a history of osteopenia and hyperlipidemia, who presented with progressive fevers, chills, fatigue, myalgias, nasal congestion, mi

Successful Interventional Treatment of Pyopneumothorax Caused by Streptococcus constellatus Associated with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus constellatus rarely causes pyopneumothorax, which is a serious state and requires a surgery. However, not every patient can tolerate surgery and individualized solutions are needed. Furthermore, many known situations are risk factors of S. constellatus infection, but S. constellatus pyopneumothorax associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis has not been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 74-year-old male with multiple encapsulated pyopneumothorax caused by S. constellatus. Given his respiratory failure, we provided two-stage percutaneous right empyema

Rare Purulent Cardiac Tamponade Caused by Streptococcus Constellatus in a Young Immunocompetent Patient: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND Purulent pericardial tamponade is a very rare occurrence in the current era of widespread antibiotic use. It is even rarer when caused by Streptococcus constellatus: a microorganism usually classified among the normal flora of the human body. It is occasionally diagnosed with certain predisposing factors. CASE REPORT We present the third case of Streptococcus constellatus cardiac tamponade reported in the current medical literature, occurring in a previously healthy young man who was initially admitted and treated for possible community-acquired pneumonia. The patient required immed

A case of aortitis and saccular aortic aneurysm caused by rare aetiological organisms, Streptococcus constellatus and parvovirus B19, and atherosclerosis.

Aortitis and mycotic aneurysm are vascular conditions characterized by inflammation of the aortic wall or the presence of an aneurysm resulting from microbial infection. This is a rare case of aortic aneurysm caused by atherosclerosis, with Streptococcus constellatus and Parvovirus B19 infection, in a 60-year-old male. The patient presented with rigors and pleuritic chest pain, and was found to have a saccular aneurysm of the ascending aorta and pericardial effusion. The patient underwent urgent replacement of the ascending aorta and completed 6 weeks of antibiotics with good recovery. This ca

Acute Spinal Epidural Abscess of the Cervical Spine Caused by Streptococcus constellatus Leads to Paraplegia in an Adult: A Case Report.

The incidence of a spinal epidural abscess (SEA), which can cause serious neurological complications, is low; however, the incidence of SEA caused by Streptococcus is even lower, most of which are reported in the thoracolumbar spine and lumbosacral segment. We reported a case of cervical SEA caused by Streptococcus constellatus infection, resulting in paralysis of the patient. The acute onset of SEA in a 44-year-old male led to decreased upper limb muscle strength, lower limb paralysis, and loss of bowel and bladder function, and imaging and blood tests suggested pyogenic spondylitis. Emergenc

Subdural empyema in a 14-year-old female initially diagnosed as meningitis: a case report of a rare Streptococcus constellatus infection.

BACKGROUND: Subdural empyema (SDE) is an uncommon, potentially life-threatening intracranial infection that can present with meningitis-like features, causing a diagnostic challenge. Streptococcus constellatus, a member of the Streptococcus anginosus group, is an unusual cause of central nervous system infections in adolescents, but is well known for its propensity to form abscesses. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a previously healthy 14-year-old female who presented with acute severe headache, neck stiffness, photophobia, and vomiting following an upper respiratory illness with foul-smelling n

[Prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Streptococcus constellatus infection complicated with perivalvular abscess: serial observation by transesophageal echocardiography: a case report].

A 61-year-old man was admitted to an associated hospital because of fever. He had undergone aortic valve and mitral valve replacement 6 years ago, because of rheumatic aortic valve stenosis, and mitral valve stenosis and regurgitation. He had prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by a rare Streptococcus constellatus infection complicated by multiple organ failure and systemic embolism. We considered that surgical treatment was difficult, and continued antibiotic treatment. The inflammatory reaction and fever improved. Prosthetic valve endocarditis is often difficult to identify and treat. Strep

Surgical management of refractory massive hemoptysis from pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm due to Streptococcus constellatus: a rare case report and literature review.

Pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm (PAP) is a rare but potentially fatal vascular lesion resulting from focal disruption of the pulmonary arterial wall. Although hemoptysis from the pulmonary arterial system is uncommon, PAP carries a high risk of rupture, with reported mortality rates up to 50%. PAP is most often caused by trauma or infection, with pyogenic bacteria and fungi as typical pathogens, while Streptococcus constellatus is an exceptionally rare cause. A 60-year-old woman with well-controlled type 2 diabetes presented with recurrent massive hemoptysis, fever, and right-sided pleuritic c

Rapid and precise identification of cervicothoracic necrotizing fasciitis caused by Prevotella and Streptococcus constellatus by using Nanopore sequencing technology: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cervicothoracic necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is one form of necrotizing soft-tissue infections, which could lead to patient demise during short course. Therefore, early recognition and immediate treatment contribute to promising prognosis of patients. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old diabetic patient presented with a sore throat and progressive irritation of the neck and chest for 4 days. The initial diagnosis was considered to be soft-tissue infection and the clinician gave empirical anti-infectious medication for expectant treatment. During the course of disease, surgical incis

Aortic valve replacement with sutureless Perceval S valve: A case report of aortic root homograft failure in the setting of Streptococcus constellatus endocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Surgery for failed homograft aortic root replacement with extensive calcification in the setting of endocarditis alone is very challenging. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of redo aortic valve replacement and mitral valve replacement, in a 39 years old presenting with a rare Streptococcus constellatus endocarditis of a previously implanted homograft root and native mitral valve, where conventional valve replacement proved nonfeasible. S. constellatus had caused severe tissue destruction and the extensive calcification in the homograft prevented conventional valve replacement with

Recurrent vertebral osteomyelitis and psoas abscess caused by Streptococcus constellatus and Fusobacterium nucleatum in a patient with atrial septal defect and an occult dental infection.

We describe a case in which recurrent vertebral osteomyelitis and psoas abscess due to Streptococcus constellatus and Fusobacterium nucleatum developed in a patient with a previously unrecognized atrial septal defect with bidirectional shunts. Disease recurrence was ascribed to the presence of dental disease, which served as the source of infection. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in which vertebral osteomyelitis and psoas abscess have been associated with atrial septal defect.

Bilateral Empyema With Beta Hemolytic Group C Streptococcus and Streptococcus constellatus Co-infection Resulting From an Esophageal Perforation and Associated With Septic Shock, Diffuse ST Elevation, and New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation.

Empyema is the collection of pus in the pleural cavity and most times, it occurs unilaterally. It is often associated with underlying pneumonia, but other causes have been identified as well. When it occurs after an esophageal perforation, which in itself is also rare, morbidity and mortality are even higher. Esophageal perforation can cause life-threatening complications due to its close proximity to the vital organs of the mediastinum, necessitating its timely diagnosis and aggressive management. Bacteria forming part of the normal esophageal and oral flora are the most common causative path

Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection Secondary to Streptococcus constellatus, Actinomyces odontolyticus, and Gemella morbillorum in an Intravenous Drug User: A Case Report and Literature Review.

A 53-year-old male with active IV heroin use presented with left upper extremity pain, erythema, swelling, and purulent foul-smelling drainage. Rapid diagnosis of necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) was made based on clinical and radiologic findings. He was taken to the operating room for wound washouts and surgical debridements. The early microbiologic diagnosis was made based on intraoperative cultures. Successful treatment of NSTI in the setting of rare pathogens was achieved. The wound was ultimately treated with wound vac therapy, followed by primary delayed closure of the upper extr

Periocular necrotizing fasciitis causing blindness.

IMPORTANCE: Periocular necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but potentially devastating disease, accompanied by high rates of morbidity and mortality. OBSERVATIONS: We report 5 cases of periocular necrotizing fasciitis resulting in severe vision loss, 3 of which required exenteration to contain the disease and only 1 of which recovered vision. Three cases were caused by group A streptococcus; 1, by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; and 1, by Streptococcus anginosus constellatus. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Providers should maintain a high clinical suspicion for necrotizing fasciitis and
