BACKGROUND: Pediatric basal ganglia abscesses are extremely rare, with only 2 other published cases in the literature. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of a primary bacterial abscess caused by Streptococcus intermedius in the basal ganglia of a pediatric patient.
OBSERVATIONS: This case coincides with a rise in neuroinvasive streptococcal infections among children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prompt MRI with diffusion and attenuation analyses allowed for abscess identification and treatment with neurosurgical drainage, leading to full recovery. Although intracranial abscesse

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare genetic disease characterized by epistaxis, telangiectasias, and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Clinical diagnosis of HHT is typically guided by fulfillment of the Curaçao criteria. HHT is a known risk factor for brain abscesses in the pediatric population, particularly in those with pulmonary AVMs, where intrapulmonary right-to-left shunting permits septic emboli to seed the brain. We report the case of a 9-year-old girl with asthma and chronic sinusitis who presented with 5 days of congestion, cough, and worsening headache in the set

BACKGROUND: Subacute bacterial endocarditis (SBE) is an infection of the heart involving damaged valves or endothelium. The most common organisms causing SBE are the viridans streptococci. Viridans streptococci differ in their propensity to cause SBE, which is related to the ability to adhere to damaged heart valves and endothelium, which is a function of extracellular matrix production. Streptococcus intermedius is a member of the S. anginosus group. S. intermedius is one of the many strains of viridans streptococci and a rare cause of SBE. SBE may result following a high-grade, sustained ver

UNLABELLED: The definition of the microbiology of pleural space infection has been challenging due to the poor yield of conventional culture. Here, the results of a 16S ribosomal RNA gene PCR/sequencing assay performed on pleural fluid in routine clinical practice between August 2020 and January 2023 were evaluated. Amplified 16S rRNA gene DNA was submitted to Sanger sequencing and/or next-generation sequencing or results were reported as negative, depending on PCR crossing threshold value. In all, 496 pleural fluids were tested at Mayo Clinic Laboratories, with 227 positive results, including

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG), also known as the Streptococcus milleri group, consists of Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus intermedius and Streptococcus constellatus. Skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, skeletal infections and ear-nose-throat (ENT) and cervical infections are the most common presentations. This study aimed to evaluate SAG infections in children.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on patients aged 0-18 years who had cultures positive for S. anginosus, S. intermedius, or S. constellatus between January 1, 2019, and Mar

Here, we present a case of a healthy young man with an initial presentation concerning for infectious encephalitis later found on neuroimaging to have extensive intracranial lesions. Pathological analysis of these lesions was consistent with a bacterial intraparenchymal abscess; however, cultures were negative for a causative organism. Results of gene sequencing from an abscess sample were consistent with Streptococcus intermedius infection. Streptococcus intermedius, a β-hemolytic gram-positive species of the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG), is known to possess several virulence factors t

The authors report a case of a subdural empyema (SDE) caused by a coinfection with Streptococcus intermedius and Streptococcus pneumoniae, initially considered a S. intermedius infection only. An otherwise healthy 11-year-old female was admitted to the hospital after 5 days of illness. Symptoms were consistent with classical SDE symptoms and progressed rapidly with finally somnolence before the first neurosurgical procedure despite relevant antibiotic treatment. Primary MRI showed an interhemispheric SDE and a postoperative control CT scan showed progression of the empyema infratentorially. Th

The prevalence and role of viridans group streptococci in the female genital tract have not been well described. In this study of 482 pregnant women, 147 (30%) were culture positive for viridans group streptococci. Of 392 women with predominant Lactobacillus morphotypes by Gram stain (normal), 110 (28%) were colonized with viridans group streptococci, compared with 37 (41%) of 90 women with bacterial vaginosis (BV) (P = 0.02). To determine whether any species were associated with BV, 177 consecutively isolated viridans group streptococci from the vagina were identified to the species level by

Streptococcus intermedius is a Gram-positive commensal of the oral cavity with tendency to cause brain and liver abscesses. Mediastinal involvement from S. intermedius is very rare. We present a case of 22-year-old male with newly detected mediastinal conglomerate nodal mass. On his way for bronchoscopy, he developed seizures and was found to have three brain lesions. The aspirate from brain biopsy grew S. intermedius whereas the aspirate from mediastinum showed only acute inflammation. Follow up imaging after antibiotic treatment showed interval resolution of brain abscesses and the mediastin

An optimized system of computerized image analysis was used to investigate variations in the adherence of Staphylococcus intermedius to canine corneocytes from four different breed groups and six different anatomical sites. S. intermedius showed significantly greater adherence to the head and neck compared with the dorsum, but adherence to the limb, axilla and groin did not differ from other sites. Furthermore, there was significantly greater adherence of S. intermedius to corneocytes from the dorsum, forelimb, axilla and groin of Boxers and Bull Terriers than Spaniels and Hounds. S. intermedi

Lancefield group F streptococci have been found almost exclusively as members of the 'Streptococcus milleri' group, although they have been reported very occasionally in some other streptococcal species. Among 302 patients with bacteraemia caused by viridans streptococci over a 6-year period, three cases were caused by Streptococcus sinensis (type strain HKU4T, HKU5 and HKU6). All three patients had infective endocarditis complicating their underlying chronic rheumatic heart diseases. Gene sequencing showed no base differences between the 16S rRNA gene sequences of HKU5 and HKU6 and that of HK

The production of mannosidase activity by all currently recognized species of human viridans group streptococci was determined using an assay in which bacterial growth was dependent on the degradation of the high-mannose-type glycans of RNase B and subsequent utilization of released mannose. RNase B is an excellent substrate for the demonstration of mannosidase activity since it is a glycoprotein with a single glycosylation site which is occupied by high-mannose-type glycoforms containing five to nine mannose residues. Mannosidase activity was produced only by some members of the mitis group (

Streptococcus anginosus was recently identified as a distinct species from the other members of Streptococcus milleri group (Streptococcus constellatus, Streptococcus intermedius). We report a rare case of nonclostridial gas gangrene caused by S. anginosus. A 62-year-old diabetic woman was admitted with gas gangrene of the perineal area. She had been taking her oral hypoglycemia medication regularly for 10 years, but the diabetes was inadequately controlled. She was treated with surgical debridement of the necrotic tissue, insulin injection, and antibiotic therapy, and had a satisfactory clini

Streptococcus intermedius is a Gram-positive cocci, normally found in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. It has been associated with deep-seated purulent abscesses commonly in the brain or liver in immunocompromised patients. Here, we discuss the case of a 21-year-old immunocompetent patient that presented with septic shock in the setting of multiple pyogenic liver abscesses with positive blood cultures for S. intermedius The patient had a dental cleaning 3 months prior to admission. The abscesses resolved with ultrasound guided drainage and antibiotic therapy.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported a mouse model of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC)-like chronic nonsuppurative destructive cholangitis (CNSDC), in which frequent injections of Streptococcus intermedius induced CNSDC and autoantibody production. The present study was performed to verify the model by examining 1) the reappearance of the PBC-like CNSDC after lymphocyte transfer from model to naïve mice, 2) the involvement of autophagy, and 3) the influence of the strain difference.
METHODS: Mice were inoculated with S. intermedius weekly for 8 weeks, then sacrificed to obtain samples. Spleen ce

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a leading cause of hospitalization and mortality, with Streptococcus pneumoniae as a leading cause. Chest radiography, the standard initial imaging modality, can miss early complications, which lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Computed tomography (CT) provides greater detail in identifying complications. We report a 67-year-old male with chest pain who was treated in an outpatient setting with oral antibiotics for suspected CAP; however, he experienced clinical deterioration, including fever, cough, weight loss, and worsening respiratory symptoms

Biliary dysbiosis is associated with gallbladder cancer (GBC). We aimed to look for biliary bacteria specifically detected in GBC patients. We used 16S rRNA-based metagenomic analysis to elucidate biliary microbiota in 30 GBC and 30 gallstones-associated chronic cholecystitis patients. Relative abundance of five genera, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Halomonas, Escherichia and Caulobacter was significantly associated with GBC. Of 15-species, 7 were detected significantly higher in GBC, Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus constellatus, Streptococcus intermedius, Actinomyces bowdenii, Actinomyc

Streptococcus constellatus (SC) is a species of Streptococcus belonging to the Streptococcus anginosus group, along with Streptococcus anginosus and Streptococcus intermedius. Despite its commensal nature, underlying risk factors and medical conditions might lead to various anatomic site infections caused by this opportunistic pathogen. Although SC infections have mostly been associated with bacteremia, some case reports of abscess and empyema formation have been documented. Herein, we report a case of a middle-aged female patient who initially presented with radiculopathy symptoms. Subsequent
