Rapid and constant detection of HIV antibody response in saliva of HIV-infected patients; selective distribution of anti-HIV activity in the IgG isotype.

Anti-HIV antibodies can be specifically detected with a sensitivity and a specificity of 100% in the saliva of all HIV-infected patients. A saliva collection device facilitates the sampling procedure, and if a rapid test is used, the diagnosis of infection can be established in as little as 10 min. The analysis of a group of CDC stage IV AIDS patients showed a decrease in lactoferrin (produced by the oral mucosa) in comparison with HIV-negative controls, associated with an increase in albumin (filtering from plasma), indicating an alteration of the mucosal barrier. The salivary anti-HIV-gp160

Composition and flow rate of saliva and caries development in young rats following administration of lithium.

Lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), an antipsychotic medication, was investigated to determine the effects on the stimulated flow and composition of saliva and on caries development in rats. Lithium carbonate was delivered via osmotic pumps at 10, 15 and 60 mg/kg/day. All animals were infected with Streptococcus sobrinus 6715 and fed a cariogenic diet. Lithium administration exerted a caries-protective effect on sulcal surfaces, though the reduction in caries scores was statistically significant only for the groups receiving Li2CO3 at 10 and 60 mg/kg/day compared to control animals (p +/- 0.05, ANOVA)

Synergistic inhibition of Streptococcal biofilm by ribose and xylitol.

Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus are the major causative agents of human dental caries. Therefore, the removal or inhibition of these streptococcal biofilms is essential for dental caries prevention. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of ribose treatment alone or in combination with xylitol on streptococcal biofilm formation for both species. Furthermore, we examined the expression of genes responsible for dextran-dependent aggregation (DDAG). In addition, we investigated whether ribose affects the biofilm formation of xylitol-insensitive streptococci, which results

Tea tree oil in inhibiting oral cariogenic bacterial growth an in vivo study for managing dental caries.

Dental caries is considered a major health burden, and preventive strategies are needed to improve oral health. It is suggested that natural essential oils possess anti-plaque formation properties and exhibit strong antimicrobial activity; however, in vivo studies to support these concepts are scarce. We evaluated the effects of tea tree oil (TTO) on caries initiation and progression in vivo to generate supportive data for clinical studies in patients at high risk of caries. We first assessed TTO in vitro against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, two of the most common oral bact

Effect of sodium fluoride on oral biofilm microbiota and enamel demineralization.

OBJECTIVE: Fluoride is widely used as an anti-caries agent, e.g. in toothpastes and mouth rinses. However, the nature of the anti-caries action is not entirely clear. Mechanisms suspected to explain the cariostatic effect include inhibitory effects on acid formation by bacteria, inhibition of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) production, inhibition of enamel demineralization and enhancement of remineralizaton or combination thereof. The aim of this study was to examine with the supragingival Zurich in vitro biofilm model the effect of fluoride in NaF formulation, on the microbiota and on demi

Mutans streptococci: acquisition and transmission.

Dental caries is an infectious and transmissible disease. The mutans streptococci (MS) are infectious agents most strongly associated with dental caries. Earlier studies demonstrated that infants acquire MS from their mothers and only after the eruption of primary teeth. More recent studies indicate that MS can colonize the mouths of predentate infants and that horizontal as well as vertical transmission does occur. The purpose of this paper was to demonstrate that these findings will likely facilitate the development of strategies to prevent or delay infant infection by these microbes, thereb

Antibacterial activity of dental gels containing combinations of amine fluoride, stannous fluoride, and chlorhexidine against cariogenic bacteria.

The in vitro susceptibility of Streptococcus mutans, S. sobrinus and Lactobacillus casei to dental gels containing various combinations of amine fluoride (AmF 297), stannous fluoride (SnF2), and chlorhexidine (CHX) was studied. The combination of AmF-SnF2 with a total fluoride content of 1.2% was the most effective against mutans streptococci but not against L. casei. At notably lower total fluoride concentration (0.4%), AmF as such or combined with SnF2, was significantly less effective against mutans streptococci than CHX or CHX-AmF-SnF2 combinations. CHX-AmF combination was a slightly more

Fluorescence Spectroscopy Shows Porphyrins Produced by Cultured Oral Bacteria Differ Depending on Composition of Growth Media.

Red fluorophores synthesized by oral bacteria are important for fluorescence-based diagnosis and treatment because they are used as markers for bacterially infected tissue, mature plaque, or calculus. A range of porphyrins have been identified as the source of this fluorescence in carious tissue. It is not clear which of these porphyrins are produced by individual oral bacteria or whether this ability depends on other factors. This study examined and compared the fluorescence spectra produced by selected cultured oral bacteria when grown on agars containing different nutrients with spectra for

Role of sucrose in the fitness of Streptococcus mutans.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries has been closely linked to fermentable carbohydrates as key environmental factors. Sucrose has been identified as the most cariogenic carbohydrate. Streptococcus mutans, considered to be the primary pathogen causing dental caries, is able to utilize sucrose as a nutrient source, partially for the production of intracellular storage components and for the production of extracellular glucans via the glucosyltransferases GtfB, GtfC, and GtfD. The following study explores the competitiveness and fitness of S. mutans when grown with different concentrations of sucrose.
