BACKGROUND: Neonatal jaundice affects up to 60% of newborns, with pathological cases frequently associated with impaired bilirubin metabolism and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Although evidence implicates gut microbiota in bilirubin metabolism, the precise mechanisms remain incompletely characterized. This study investigated treatment-associated changes in gut microbiota composition, fecal metabolites, and liver function in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia.
METHODS: A total of forty-two neonates diagnosed with hyperbilirubinemia were recruited. Fecal samples were collected pre- and post-treatment

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are commonly used probiotics that improve human health in various aspects. We previously reported that yogurt starter strains, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus 2038 and Streptococcus thermophilus 1131, potentially enhance the intestinal epithelial barrier function by inducing the expression of antimicrobial peptides in the small intestine. However, their effects on physical barrier functions remain unknown. In this study, we found that both strains ameliorated the decreased trans-epithelial resistance and the increased permeability of fluorescein isothiocy

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus is a beneficial lactic acid bacterium and constitutes one of the most used, and thus consumed, dairy starters, worldwide. This homofermentative bacterium was the first lactobacillus described and is involved in the fermentation of yogurt and of diverse other fermented products, including cheeses. It has a long history of safe use, as well as documented probiotic lato sensu effects, including alleviation of lactose intolerance. Plant-based fermented products presently experience a considerable development, as a result of evolution of consumers' habits

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related hypertensive disorder affecting about 3%-5% of pregnancies worldwide. Recent traditional observational studies have suggested that the gut microbiota was related to preeclampsia. Some Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have examined the link between gut microbiota and preeclampsia using genetic variants as proxies. However, they were limited to a small number of microbial taxa and did not include microbial metabolic pathways.
METHODS: The latest large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data were utilized, which included 7738

Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and although Cytarabine (CYT) exhibits anticancer activity, its clinical application is often restricted by dose-dependent toxicity. In this study, we investigated the synergistic anticancer potential of the NCBI-registered probiotic Streptococcus thermophilus Ab.342 SH (GenBank accession no. PX426457) in combination with CYT against human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells. Following molecular identification of the probiotic isolate, A549 cells were treated with different concentrations of bacterial cell-free sup

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine and reproductive disorder affecting women of reproductive age. While the gut microbiota has been implicated in PCOS pathophysiology, the role of microbial-derived metabolites as mediators of host-microbe interactions remains poorly defined. Here, we integrated untargeted gut metabolomics with metagenomic profiling in patients with PCOS and identified a marked depletion of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DHPAA), a flavonoid-derived microbial catabolite. Oral administration of DHPAA ameliorated PCOS-like phenotypes in two mouse models by

CRISPR-Cas immunity depends on acquiring spacers that generate functional CRISPR RNA (crRNA) guides. For most RNA-targeting type III systems, this poses a paradox: spacers are captured from DNA but defense requires RNA interaction, thus the system must infer transcriptional relevance of DNA fragments. We compared spacer acquisition profiles for co-occurring type III (RNA-recognizing) and type II (DNA-recognizing) systems in Streptococcus thermophilus during lytic phage infection. Type III spacer acquisition was highly enriched for early phage genes whereas type II spacers were distributed geno

Heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have the ability to metabolize 6-carbon sugars, such as galactose, to produce carbon dioxide, which can cause late-stage gas formation defects in Cheddar cheese characterized by slits, cracks, and blown retail packaging. Slits and cracks make the cheese more difficult to shred and slice, and blown bags make the cheese less appealing to customers. Homofermentative LAB are often used as adjunct cultures to modify the flavor of Cheddar cheese and have the potential to act as bioprotective cultures and inhibit gas production by heterofermentative nonst

Bile acids (BAs) play a crucial role in the human body's defense against infections caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses. BAs counteract infections not only through interactions with intestinal bacteria exhibiting bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity but they also directly combat infections. Building upon our research group's previous discoveries highlighting the role of BAs in combating infections, we have initiated an in-depth investigation into the interactions between BAs and intestinal microbiota. Leveraging the existing literature, we offer a comprehensive analysis of the relationships b

Streptococcus pneumoniae, commonly referred to as pneumococci, can cause severe and invasive infections, which are major causes of communicable disease morbidity and mortality in Europe and globally. The differentiation of S. pneumoniae from other Streptococcus species, especially from other oral streptococci, has proved to be particularly difficult and tedious. In this work, we evaluate if Raman spectroscopy holds potential for a reliable differentiation of S. pneumoniae from other streptococci. Raman spectra of eight different S. pneumoniae strains and four other Streptococcus species (S. sa

Depression, a prevalent psychiatric disorder, exerts severe and debilitating impacts on an individual's mental and physical well-being, and it is considered a chronic mental illness. Chronic stress plays an important role in the pathophysiology of depression. Lactobacillus plantarum and Streptococcus thermophilus are psychobiotic bacteria and synthesize some neurotransmitters that play a role in the pathogenesis of depression. In this study, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of Bactolac (Lactobacillus plantarum NBIMCC 8767 + Streptococcus thermophilus NBIMCC 8258) on chronic str

Integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) are widespread chromosomal mobile genetic elements which can transfer autonomously by conjugation in bacteria. Thirteen ICEs with a conjugation module closely related to that of ICESt3 of Streptococcus thermophilus were characterized in Streptococcus salivarius by whole-genome sequencing. Sequence comparison highlighted ICE evolution by shuffling of 3 different integration/excision modules (for integration in the 3' end of the fda, rpsI, or rpmG gene) with the conjugation module of the ICESt3 subfamily. Sequence analyses also pointed out a recombinat

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk is a major public health concern. It is a hydroxylated metabolite of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), formed in the liver of animals after ingestion of contaminated feed and subsequently excreted into milk. Biological techniques could be used to combat this hepatotoxic and carcinogenic toxin. Therefore, this study evaluated the ability of eight lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains to reduce AFM1 levels in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), MRS broth, and Karish cheese using viable cells, while heat-inactivated cells, rendered non-viable by thermal treatment, were evaluated only in

An internal fragment of the recA gene from eight gram-positive organisms has been amplified by using degenerate primers in a polymerase chain reaction. The internal 348- or 360-bp recA DNA segments from Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium acetobutylicum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus helveticus, Leuconostoc mesanteroides, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus salivarus subsp. thermophilus were amplified, cloned, and sequenced. The G + C contents of the DNA from these species range from 28 to 52%. The sequences of the bacterial recA genes show strong relatedness.

Ice cream is a popular dairy food in the United States. Unfortunately, substantial loss of product occurs during production, despite it being of acceptable quality. There are many valuable components in waste ice cream (WIC) that can be utilized if separated. To investigate the potential of wastewater treatment techniques as a means of recovering fat from WIC, a variety of flocculants were tested on 5 ice cream varieties. The flocculation procedure was able to concentrate 89% to 100% of the total fat in 50% to 70% of the original volume. The amount of fat recovered was consistently superior to

A phage satellite (PS) typically resides within repeat regions (attL and attR sites) of a bacterial genome. Its genome ranges from 7 to 20-kb and includes genes encoding an integrase along with regulatory and DNA replication functions. However, it lacks genes associated with viral structural proteins. Streptococcus thermophilus (S.t.) is extensively used to produce yogurt and specialty cheeses. Intriguingly, the majority of S.t. strains harbor a PS while very few possess a complete prophage, suggesting that PSs may confer advantages to their hosts. In this study, we showed that PSs of S.t. can
