The prevalence of genotypes that determine resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, and streptogramins B compared with spiramycin susceptibility among erythromycin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci, particularly Staphylococcus epidermidis, can be regarded as potential reservoirs of resistance genes for pathogenic strains, e.g., Staphylococcus aureus. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of different resistance phenotypes to macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramins B (MLSB) antibiotics among erythromycin-resistant S. epidermidis, together with the evaluation of genes promoting the following different types of MLSB resistance:ermA, ermB, ermC,msrA, mphC, and linA/A'. Susceptibility to spiramycin was also examined. Among 75 erythromycin-resis

[Investigation of macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin B resistance in Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from clinical samples by phenotypical and genotypical methods].

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common cause of both community and healthcare-associated infections. As staphylococci have developed resistance to various antibiotics, initially to penicillins then to methicillin and glycopeptides and have the ability to cause epidemics, they continue to be a major problem from past to present. Methicillin resistance gave rise to the use of alternative antibiotics such as macrolides, however worldwide development of macrolide resistance limited the use of these antibiotics. Macrolide resistance occurs either through target site modification (MLS(B) ph

Distribution of genes encoding resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, and streptogramins among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from burn patients.

The increasing resistance to macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B agents among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a worldwide problem for the health community. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of ermA, ermB, ermC, and msrA in MRSA strains isolated from burn patients in Ahvaz, southwest of Iran. A total of 76 isolates of S. aureus were collected from January to May 2017 from Taleghani Burn Hospital in Ahvaz. Among 76 S. aureus strains collected, 60 (78.9%) isolates were MRSA. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing for MRSA showed extreme high resistance

Macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin resistance phenotypes and genotypes of coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates from bovine mastitis.

BACKGROUND: There are limited data available on macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin (MLS) resistance of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) from bovine milk in China. To address this knowledge gap, MLS resistance was determined in 121 S. aureus and 97 CoNS isolates. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of MLS antibiotics were determined by an agar dilution method, while differentiation of MLS phenotypes was performed by a double-disc diffusion test. MLS resistance genotypes were determined by PCR for corresponding resistance genes. RESULTS: Forty

Epidemiologic trends in nosocomial and community-acquired infections due to antibiotic-resistant gram-positive bacteria: the role of streptogramins and other newer compounds.

The Gram-positive cocci have clearly re-emerged as important pathogens world-wide in the past two decades. Staphylococci, including the coagulase-negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus, and the enterococci account for approximately one-third of all blood stream infections and as much as 50% of nosocomial blood stream infections. Although Streptococcus pneumoniae is often considered a community-acquired pathogen, it is also an important cause of nosocomial infection. The hallmark of these Gram-positive pathogens is increasing resistance to available antimicrobial agents. Of particular

Staphylococcus aureus with an erm-mediated constitutive macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B resistance phenotype has reduced susceptibility to the new ketolide, solithromycin.

BACKGROUND: Solithromycin, the fourth generation of ketolides, has been demonstrated potent antibacterial effect against commonly-isolated gram-positive strains. However, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) strains with a higher solithromycin MIC have already been emerged, the mechanism of which is unknown. METHODS: Antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed on 266 strains of S. aureus. The antibiotic resistance phenotype of erm-positive strain was determined by D-zone test. Spontaneous mutation frequency analysis was performed to compare the risk levels for solithromycin resistance among

Technical note: Occurrence in fecal microbiota of genes conferring resistance to both macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B and tetracyclines concomitant with feeding of beef cattle with tylosin.

Development of antimicrobial resistance in food animals receiving antimicrobials has been well documented among bacterial isolates, especially pathogens, but information on development of antimicrobial resistance at the microbial community level during long-term feeding of antimicrobials is lacking. The objective of this study was to examine the association between inclusion of tylosin in feed and occurrence of resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLS(B)) in the entire fecal microbial communities of beef cattle over a feeding study of 168 d. A completely randomized design inclu

D test: a simple test with big implication for Staphylococcus aureus macrolide-lincosamide-streptograminB resistance pattern.

D test is a simple disc diffusion test giving high throughput results. It is used to study the macrolide lincosamide streptogramin resistance (MLSB), both constitutive and inducible as well as macrolide streptogramin resistance (MSB) in Staphylococcus aureus. In this test, erythromycin (macrolide) and clindamycin (lincosamide derivative) discs are placed adjacent to each other over the Mueller Hinton agar medium inoculated with the test organism. The growth of the organism up to the edges of the disc, flattening of the clindamycin zone (D test positive) near the erythromycin disc (resistant) a

Evidence of a conjugal erythromycin resistance element in the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi.

We report the identification of isolates of Borrelia burgdorferi strain B31 that exhibit an unusual macrolide-lincosamide (ML) or macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin A (MLS(A)) antibiotic resistance pattern. Low-passage isolates were resistant to high levels (>100 microg/mL) of erythromycin, spiramycin and the lincosamides but were sensitive to dalfopristin, an analogue of streptogramin B. Interestingly, the high-passage erythromycin-resistant strain B31 was resistant to quinupristin, an analogue of streptogramin A (25 microg/mL). Biochemical analysis revealed that resistance was not due to an

Transfer of multiple antibiotic resistance between subspecies of Bacteroides fragilis.

Resistance to clindamycin, erythromycin, streptogramins, and tetracycline was shown to be transferable from a clinical isolate of Bacteroides fragilis subspecies distasonis to a sensitive strain of B. fragilis subspecies fragilis. Resistance to clindamycin, erythromycin, and streptogramins was transferable from a clinical isolate of B. fragilis subspecies fragilis to the sensitive strain of B. fragilis subspecies fragilis. Except for tetracycline, resistance to all of these antibiotics was spontaneously curable en bloc at a frequency of approximately 10(-2). These results suggest that resistan

[Antibiotic sensitivity of Mycoplasma pathogenic for man].

Human pathogen mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum) are intrinsically resistant to antibiotics which inhibit the cell wall biosynthesis (beta-lactams, vancomycin, bacitracin), to polymyxins, rifamycins, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, 5-nitroimidazoles, nitrofurans and to presently available quinolones. These three species are moderately susceptible to aminoglycosides, susceptible to chloramphenicol and highly susceptible to tetracyclines. M. pneumoniae is susceptible to macrolides, lincosamins and streptogramins. M. hominis is resistant to early macrolid

In vitro antimicrobial profile of Ureaplasma urealyticum from genital tract of childbearing-aged women in Northern and Southern Italy.

Ureaplasma urealyticum is an opportunistic pathogen during pregnancy and in newborns. Other clinical problems related to U. urealyticum infections are: no susceptibility to cell wall-active drugs, limits of antibiotic treatment in pregnancy, and spread of antimicrobial resistance. In addition, the results of antimicrobial susceptibility against U. urealyticum from various countries are few and controversial. The antimicrobial susceptibility of U. urealyticum, isolated from cervical swabs and collected from outpatient childbearing-aged women in Italy from 2009 to 2012, was performed against flu

Distribution of MecA and Erm Genes among Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus with Inducible Resistance to Clindamycin.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and its ability to confer cross-resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B has complicated the treatment against it. Gene-based studies among phenotypic methicillin-resistant isolates with inducible resistance to clindamycin are less available in Nepal. This work was undertaken to detect the mecA and erm genes among such phenotypes isolated from clinical samples. METHODS: S. aureus isolated from different clinical samples was identified by standard microbiological procedures (Gram-staining, colony morphology, an

Quantifying Human Health Risks from Virginiamycin Use in Food Animals in China.

Virginiamycin (VM), a streptogramin antibiotic, has been used to promote healthy growth and treat illnesses in farm animals in the United States and other countries. The combination streptogramin Quinupristin-Dalfopristin (QD) was approved in the United States in 1999 for treating patients with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREF) infections. Many chickens and swine test positive for QD-resistant E. faecium, raising concerns that using VM in food animals might select for streptogramin-resistant strains of E. faecium that could compromise QD effectiveness in treating human VREF infe

Antibiotic resistance and population structure of Staphylococcus epidermidis from prosthetic joint infections in Sweden and France.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Staphylococcus epidermidis is a major cause of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs). Multidrug resistant (MDR), hospital-adapted clones constitute most cases globally, though regional differences in lineage dissemination likely exist. The aim was to explore the population structure of S. epidermidis from PJIs in Sweden and France, with a focus on the presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). METHODS: This study included genome sequence data from 191 clinical S. epidermidis isolates collected from patients with PJI in central Sweden (2007-16; n = 138) and the Lyon re
