The Risk of Psychological Stress on Cancer Recurrence: A Systematic Review.

Cancer recurrence is a significant clinical issue in cancer treatment. Psychological stress has been known to contribute to the incidence and progression of cancer; however, its effect on cancer recurrence remains inconclusive. We conducted a systematic review to examine the current evidence from the Medline (PubMed), Embase and Cochrane Library up to May 2021. Among 35 relevant articles, a total of 6 studies (10 data points) were finally selected, which enrolled 26,329 patients (26,219 breast cancer patients except hepatocellular carcinoma patients in 1 study), 4 cohort studies (8 data points

Psychological Stress, Mast Cells, and Psoriasis-Is There Any Relationship?

Psoriasis vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin disease with still unknown pathogenesis. In recent years, genetic and environmental factors have been mentioned as the main causes. Among environmental factors, many researchers are trying to investigate the role of mental health and its importance in the development of many diseases. In the pathophysiology of psoriasis, the role of the interaction between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems are often emphasized. So far, no one has clearly indicated where the pathological process begins. One of the hypotheses is that chronic stress influe

The establishment of rat model in myocardial ischemia with psychological stress.

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress can provoke and aggravate myocardial ischemia, and this stress can even trigger acute coronary syndromes or sudden cardiac death. Therefore, for the first time, this study aimed to investigate the method for establishing a rat model of myocardial ischemia with psychological stress and its evaluation. METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into the sham (S, n=10), myocardial infarct (MI, n=10), psychological stress (MODEL, n=10), and myocardial infarct with psychological stress (MI + MODEL, n=10) groups. The rat model of psychological stress was

The Link between Psychological Stress and Autoimmune Response in Children.

Stress is defined as a state of threatened homeostasis or disharmony that is counteracted by a complex repertoire of physiological and behavioral adaptive responses in order to establish homeostasis. Confronted with a stressful condition, the nervous and immune systems initiate a coping process to maintain homeostasis in the body. Psychological stress, recognized as a public health issue in children and young adults, may be one mechanism to induce and maintain autoimmunity in children. It is necessary to increase our understanding of how psychological stress can affect the immune system at a y

Psychological stress and coeliac disease in childhood: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress has previously been associated with several immunological diseases, e.g. inflammatory bowel disease. Through questionnaire data from the ABIS study (All Babies In southeast Sweden) we examined the association between psychological stress in the family and biopsy-proven coeliac disease (CD) in the child. METHODS: We used serious life event, parenting stress, and parental worries as measures of psychological stress. Data were collected when the child was 1 and 2.5 years old in some 11,000 and 8,800 children, respectively. CD was confirmed through small intestina

The role of rumination, attentional biases and stress in psychological distress.

This experimental study examines the relationship between rumination and attentional bias. Additionally, the study aims to determine, within a diathesis-stress framework, whether rumination or attentional bias (or both) can prospectively predict psychological distress. Eighty-one participants completed selected measures of rumination and psychological distress at time one, in addition to experimental manipulations of rumination and mood, and measures of mood and attentional bias at time two. Seventy-three participants (90% follow-up) completed final measures of stress and psychological distres

The stress response in headache sufferers: physiological and psychological reactivity.

When examining headache sufferers' reactivity to stress, few studies attend to differing characteristics of the environment. In this study, we evaluated the influence of the clarity/ambiguity and positive/negative valence of an event on subjects' physiological and psychological reactivity. Migraine (n = 30), tension (n = 39), and control (n = 35) subjects participated in a laboratory experience in which they had to practice and then deliver a news story to a videocamera (similar to a newscaster on television). During this experience, they received performance feedback and were instructed to tr

Chronic Psychologic Stress in Mice Induces Kidney Inflammation.

KEY POINTS: Chronic stress elevates neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and cystatin C. Chronic stress increases T helper 17 and regulatory T-cell populations in the kidney. Chronic stress could increase susceptibility to kidney diseases. BACKGROUND: Chronic stress (CS) due to prolonged exposure to negative life events increases the risk of psychiatric illnesses and significantly affects physiologic processes. CS has also been linked to sustained systemic inflammation, resulting in dysregulated immune responses and organ function. We hypothesized that CS would lead to kidney inflammati

Psychosocial impacts of a mouse plague and ongoing psychological stress.

In 2020-21, parts of eastern Australia experienced a severe mouse plague, estimated to have caused up to AUD$1 billion worth of damage. Yet, the mental health impacts of such a pest plague are not empirically known. The present study sought to quantify and model the psychosocial impacts of the 2021 mouse plague and measure ongoing psychological stress two years post-plague, to provide insights into social impacts and mental wellbeing during a significant biosecurity incursion. An online survey (N = 1,691) measured key psychosocial impact metrics included psychological traits, emotional states

The Influence of Psychological Stress on HPV Infection Manifestations and Carcinogenesis.

Psychological stress is an important factor involved in disease manifestations of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and it can participate in HPV-associated carcinogenesis. The impact or effect which stress can have (exert) depends on a person's genetic pool, experiences and behaviors. Due to inconsistencies in some study results, this issue remains a subject of research. Concerning the course of HPV manifestations, it has been observed that a higher number of life stressors in at least the previous 6 months, the absence of social support and the types of personal coping mechanisms employe

Children staying in hospital: a research on psychological stress of caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Having a child hospitalized is a stressful event for parents. Previous studies have found increased stress in families with children affected by different kinds of pathologies, and analyzed disease related objective variables producing stress. However, most of these studies recruited caregivers of children with chronic or serious illnesses, and focused on evaluation of objective environmental stressors and did not consider subjective "perception" of stress. The aim of this study was to investigate perception of acute stress in caregivers taking care of children without serious phys

Prolactin, psychological stress and environment in humans: adaptation and maladaptation.

Non-puerperal lactation and/or hyperprolactinemia in humans have been related to psychological variables in a variety of ways: (1) Non-puerperal nursing; (2) Pseudopregnancy; (3) Rapid weight gain; (4) Psychogenic galactorrhea; (5) Acute prolactin responses to psychological stress; (6) High prolactin levels in persons who cope passively in real life stress situations; (7) Paternal deprivation in women with pathological hyperprolactinemia; (8) Clinical onset of prolactinomas following life-events. Publications on the above subjects are scattered in the literature as curiosities, anecdotal case-

Reactivity to stress and psychological adjustment in adults with pituitary insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Hypopituitary adults who were affected during childhood have a below-average rate of marriage, a rate of unemployment that exceeds national norms, and often indicate dissatisfaction with their life circumstances. We undertook the present study to determine the effects of short stature versus those of pituitary hormone deficiency. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: We compared hypopituitary adults (n = 25) with normal short adults (n = 25) who were matched for height, sex, age and socioeconomic status. MEASUREMENTS: In these two groups of subjects, we compared the physiological responses to a si

Response of pineal gland in clinical cases of psychological stress.

The present study includes 50 patients suffering from psychological stress disorders like thyrotoxicosis and anxiety neurosis. Biochemical estimation of melatonin was done in all these cases prior to treatment and 3 months after appropriate treatment. A significant increase in the level of melatonin was observed in thyrotoxic and anxiety neurotic cases. In all these cases, after therapy the level of melatonin was found to be within the normal limits. These observations confirm the finding that there is a pineal response to psychic stress.
