Fat implantation into Reinke's space: a histologic and stroboscopic study in the canine.

The scarred vocal fold is a cause of persistent dysphonia after laryngeal trauma, microsurgery, and tumor resection. The loss of Reinke's space with scar and stiffness is the primary cause. This study explores the technical aspects of endoscopic implantation of fat as an autologous implant for restoring the bulk and pliability of the vocal folds. Fat from the buccal area was harvested and prepared in 6 dogs. A mucosal flap submucosal pocket was prepared by means of microlaryngoscopy instrumentation. The fat implant was placed into the submucosal pocket. The mucosal flap was sutured endoscopica

[The investigation of different types of vocal disorder by statistical frequency analysis (author's transl)].

Common disorders of the vocal cords were assessed by indirect and direct laryngoscopy and by stroboscopy, and they were compared over the frequency range of "a". Amplitude and frequency variations from the normal are illustrated in recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, intubation granuloma, chronic oedema, the hyperkeratosis of chronic laryngitis, hypokinesia and hypokinetic dysphonia. In several cases, the effects of exercise or previous surgery are demonstrated. The described technique gives a useful aid to the management of vocal cord disease.

Beyond Nodules-Diagnostic and Treatment Options in Pediatric Voice Disorders.

Pediatric dysphonia is common; however, not all vocal fold pathology in children is due to nodules. Laryngeal stroboscopy (transoral or transnasal) often is essential for the diagnosis of other not-nodule lesions. As in adults, multidisciplinary care with a speech language pathologist helps with patient buy-in for therapy. Breathy dysphonia due to glottic incompetence may be related to vocal fold movement impairment (VFMI) or posterior glottic insufficiency. There are several medialization procedures available for children with VFMI due to recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

Scale for the assessment of mucosal wave dynamics of the free edges during stroboscopic examination: clinical validation study and analysis of results.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying the mucosal wave (MW) is essential when studying the voice; however, its characterization and perceived measurement during laryngeal stroboscopy (LS) are not well defined or standardized because of the subjectivity of its interpretation. This article proposed and validated a scale that characterized and approximated MW measurement during LS, applied it to participants divided into a healthy group and groups with free edge conditions, and identified differences between them. METHODS: This is a descriptive and clinical validation study of the "VASQ (Vertical axis, Ante

[Medication-induced vocal cord paralysis as an uncommon cause of cord paralysis].

A case is reported of a 57-year-old man who was found to have a right vocal cord paralysis that most likely followed prolonged treatment with the anti-arrythmic medication Amiodaron-HCl (Cordarex). Phoniatric treatment was given for 5 1/2 months, during which time microlaryngoscopy and stroboscopy were performed. With the help of speech therapy, mobility of the paralyzed cord was seen to begin to return 3 1/2 months after discontinuing the Amiodaron-HCl. Full cord mobility has not returned to date.

Eclectic Voice Therapy Program in Hyperfunctional Voice Disorders: Evidence from Multidimensional Vocal Profiling.

PURPOSE: Hyperfunctional voice disorder (HFVD) is a disorder of multifactorial origin. It can be speculated that an eclectic voice therapy program that uses combinatory approaches could bring about better efficiency of voice in these individuals. Nevertheless, very less attempts have been made to examine the efficacy of eclectic voice therapy using multidimensional voice outcome measures in the treatment of HFVD. METHOD: Ten individuals with HFVD in the age range of 20-55years attended Comprehensive Voice Habilitation Program (CVHP), an eclectic voice therapy approach for 15 sessions spread a

Evaluation of the Dysphonic Patient (in: Function Preservation in Laryngeal Cancer).

The evaluation of the dysphonic patient begins with a complete understanding of the laryngeal anatomy and physiology of voice production. A thorough history must be taken regarding the dysphonia qualities, alarming symptoms, and confounding factors. The complete head and neck examination culminates in a detailed visualization of the vocal folds using image-capturing laryngoscopy as well as stroboscopy or high-speed digital imaging to fully evaluate the viscoelastic properties of the vocal fold cover-body structure and function. Finally, the evaluation leads to the biopsy of any concerning lesi

[Function and dysfunction of the superior laryngeal nerve].

BACKGROUND: Diseases of the superior laryngeal nerve occur more often than thought. Paresis of the superior laryngeal nerve is one of the most frequent causes of dysfunction of this nerve, mainly occurring in the context of thyroid surgery. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: To avoid iatrogenic damage of the superior laryngeal nerve, knowledge of the exact topography of the course of this nerve is necessary. A lesion of the superior laryngeal nerve may be associated with changes in the voice as well as with swallowing disorders with aspiration. Diagnosis of this disease is clinically challenging because

Epidermoid cysts of the vocal cords.

Fifty-three cases of intracordal epidermoid cysts diagnosed, treated and followed from 1972 to 1981 are presented. In the clinical evaluation, special attention must be paid to the type of dysphonia and morphology of the vocal cords at indirect laryngoscopy. The epidermoid cyst is not easily visualized and the examiner must take into account signs like "monochorditis," slight bulging, unilateral nodule and diminished or abolished vibrations of one of the cords at stroboscopy. Microsurgical excision followed by voice therapy is the recommended treatment. The pathogenesis of these cysts is still
