A comparison of the intestinal helminth communities of Equidae in Southern Africa.

The intestinal helminth communities of 8 horses, 12 donkeys, 21 Hartmann's mountain zebras, and 44 Burchell's zebras were compared using the original data from 6 studies in South Africa and Namibia. Necropsy and worm recovery techniques were comparable between the studies. Sixty helminth species (58 nematode, 1 cestode, and 1 trematode species) were recorded. There were significant differences in the helminth community structures of the 4 Equus species. The helminth communities of the 2 closely related zebra subspecies were most similar, and they jointly shared 7 helminth species with donkeys

Survey of endoparasites in Chelonoidis carbonarius and Chelonoidis denticulatus kept at the zoo of the Jungle Warfare Training Center (CIGS), Central Amazon.

The genus Chelonoidis tortoises are terrestrial reptiles susceptible to gastrointestinal endoparasites, mainly due to improper management. The present study aims to analyze the frequency of gastrointestinal parasites detected in samples from Chelonoidis carbonarius and Chelonoidis denticulatus, and to identify and characterize taxonomically the main parasite types. Seven samples of fresh feces were collected from enclosures at the Jungle Warfare Training Center (CIGS) Zoo in Manaus, Amazonas, and evaluated. A high frequency of intestinal endoparasites was observed, with nematode eggs from the

Detecting Aelurostrongylus abstrusus-specific IgG antibody using an immunofluorescence assay.

Diagnosis of feline lungworm, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, is typically achieved by identifying larvae in feces following concentration through flotation or using the Baermann technique. This work presents observations on the usefulness of an indirect immunofluorescence antibody assay for detection of antibodies to this parasite in the sera of infected cats. Using first-stage larvae of A abstrusus and sera from both experimentally and naturally infected cats, it was determined that the test was fairly sensitive and did not cross-react with serum from an Ancylostoma braziliense (hookworm)-infect

The developmental lipidome of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis.

BACKGROUND: Nippostrongylus brasiliensis-a nematode of rodents-is commonly used as a model to study the immunobiology of parasitic nematodes. It is a member of the Strongylida-a large order of socioeconomically important parasitic nematodes of animals. Lipids are known to play essential roles in nematode biology, influencing cellular membranes, energy storage and/or signalling. METHODS: The present investigation provides a comprehensive, untargeted lipidomic analysis of four developmental stages/sexes (i.e. egg, L3, adult female and adult male stages) of N. brasiliensis utilising liquid chrom

Nematode serine protease inhibitor SPI-I8 negatively regulates host NF-κB signalling by hijacking MKRN1-mediated polyubiquitination of RACK1.

Parasitic roundworms are remarkable for their ability to manipulate host immune systems and ameliorate inflammatory diseases. Although much is known about the nature of nematode effectors in immune modulation, little is known about the action mode of these molecules. Here, we report that a serine protease inhibitor SPI-I8 in the extracellular vesicles of blood-feeding nematodes like Ancylostoma ceylanicum, Haemonchus contortus and Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, effectively halts excessive inflammatory responses in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrate that H. contortus SPI-I8 promotes the role of a

Eosinophilic meningitis.

Eosinophilic meningitis is defined by the presence of at least 10% eosinophils in the total cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leukocyte count. Although there are several possible causes of eosinophils in the CSF, parasitic infection is the main cause. The three common parasites causing eosinophilic meningitis include Angiostrongylus cantonensis, Gnathostoma spinigerum, and Taenia solium. Even though these parasites are endemic in tropical countries, they are now spreading globally due to extensive traveling, and physicians worldwide should pay more attention to this condition. This chapter will review

Dynamics of endoparasites in farmed fallow deer (Dama dama) from birth to puberty.

Rectal faecal samples from farmed fallow deer were examined for eggs, larvae and oocysts of gastro-intestinal and pulmonary parasites from July 1992, then the fawns were 6 weeks old, to September 1993 in four weekly intervals. The investigations showed a succession of species: Trichuris spp., Nematodirus roscidus and Capillaria bovis had their peaks in egg output in August 1992, September 1992 and February 1993, respectively. After reaching peaks the faecal output of Trichuris spp. and Nematodirus roscidus eggs showed a marked decline. The shedding of Dictyocaulus larvae had its highest peak i

Parasites and Parasite Eggs Detected in Laboratory Mice in Bursa.

OBJECTIVE: A mouse infected with parasites is not a suitable model for use in experiments, and therefore, it is necessary to know whether it is infected. In this study, the aim is to investigate the endo and exoparasites in BALB/c laboratory mice. METHODS: In this study, the presence of parasites in 250 mice obtained from Bursa Uludağ University Experimental Animal Centre was investigated by faecal flotation and cellophane tape methods. In addition, helminths recovered during necropsy of selected mice were examined to confirm species identification. RESULTS: According to the results of the r

Detection of Aelurostrongylus spp. Infection in the Neozoan American Mink (Neogale vison) in Southern Chile.

BACKGROUND: The American mink (Neogale vison) is an invasive mustelid in Chile that serves as a natural reservoir host for several pathogens. Cardiorespiratory nematodes of the superfamily Metastrongyloidea, including Aelurostrongylus spp., have been reported in carnivores worldwide but remain poorly documented in South American wildlife and invasive species. This study reports the first detection of Aelurostrongylus spp. infection in American minks in Southern Chile. METHODS: Between 2024 and 2025, 27 American mink carcasses were collected from the Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions, Southern Ch

Evidence of resistance to ivermectin in the gastrointestinal nematodes of horses from Mexican southeast.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are a major impediment to breeding and exploitation of horses. Traditional control of GIN has generated resistance to main anthelmintics, including ivermectin. An analysis of five ranches with a history of IVM use was done to determine the efficacy and resistance of GIN to IVM treatment in horses from the Mexican southeast. Predesigned questionnaires were applied to collect information on previous treatment protocols. The fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) was applied to determine resistance. Before IVM application, a McMaster test was used to diagnose GIN

Syngamiasis in juvenile American robins (Turdus migratorius), with a note on the prevalence of other fecal parasites.

Of 105 juvenile American robins (Turdus migratorius L.) examined for fecal parasites, 77.1% were infected with one or more species of endoparasite. Syngamus sp. was the most commonly encountered parasite, found in 57.1% of the birds. There was a significant association between the presence of Syngamus sp. eggs in feces and signs of respiratory-tract disease. A single oral dose of fenbendazole (100 mg/kg of body weight) eliminated Syngamus sp. infection from all of 18 birds treated, yet 10 of 16 untreated controls apparently were "self-cured" over the 12-day period of observation.

Scanning electron microscopy of Quilonia renniei from Asian elephants revealing variation in coronal leaflet number.

Although parasitic nematodes in the genera Murshidia and Quilonia (family Strongylidae) are recognized as major gastrointestinal parasites in Asian elephants, they have been poorly studied. Recently, light micrographs of these parasites in Myanmar have been presented, almost 100 years after the original drawings. However, the number of coronal leaflets, a key taxonomic feature of Quilonia species, has not been precisely determined based on light microscopy. The current study aimed to determine the exact number of coronal leaflets in Quilonia renniei specimens from Asian elephants in Myanmar. O

Determination of Enteric Parasites and Biosecurity Measures in Household Family Farming Systems in the Northwestern Nariño Region, Colombia.

Fresh vegetables cultivated in small-scale household systems may facilitate the transmission of foodborne parasitic structures due to environmental exposure and inconsistent hygienic conditions. This study identified the presence, prevalence, and distribution of enteric parasitic structures in vegetables and soils from family farming systems undergoing an agroecological transition process in the Colón-Génova subregion, Colombia, and characterized the biosecurity measures employed by producers. Standard parasitological methods were used to analyze vegetable samples (n = 216) from six horticultu

Divergent age-related changes in parasite infection occur independently of behaviour and demography in a wild ungulate.

As animals age, they exhibit a suite of phenotypic changes, often including reductions in movement and social behaviour ('behavioural ageing'). By altering an individual's exposure to parasites, behavioural ageing may influence infection status trajectories over the lifespan. However, these processes could be confounded by age-related changes in other phenotypic traits, or by selective disappearance of certain individuals owing to parasite-induced mortality. Here, we uncover contrasting age-related patterns of infection across three helminth parasites in wild adult female red deer (Cervus elap
