Evaluating Scoring Mechanisms for Measuring the Stroop Effect in Individuals With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The Cat/Dog Stroop task is a modification of the original Stroop task as a measure of cognitive inhibition frequently used in studies of individuals with Down syndrome (DS). There is great heterogeneity in scoring mechanisms for this task and similar Stroop tasks, potentially impacting convergence of and interpretation of study findings. We review scoring mechanisms used with the Stroop task in the general population and those that are used among individuals with DS to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these scoring mechanisms in this population. METHOD: We reviewed the lit

An emotional Stroop effect to malingering-related words.

This study was designed to elicit an emotional Stroop effect in simulators of malingering. Student participants (mostly women) either did or did not feign mild brain trauma. A modified Stroop test was administered, using neutral and "malingering" words. Controls showed no difference on malingering versus neutral words; simulators performed significantly worse on malingering words. Further research must specify the best method of administration to elicit a malingering Stroop effect and assess the additional discriminative power it may provide when combined with other malingering-detection strat

Acute Responses to Creatine Monohydrate and L-Arginine, Alone and Combined, on Repeated-Sprint Power, Countermovement Jump Height, and Stroop Reaction Time in Recreationally Active Men: A Randomized Double-Blind Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Creatine monohydrate (CR) and L-arginine (LA) are widely used ergogenic supplements, but whether acute co-ingestion provides additional performance or task-specific cognitive benefits beyond either supplement alone remains uncertain. This study compared placebo, CR, LA, and LA+CR on repeated-sprint power, countermovement jump (CMJ) height, and Stroop reaction time (RT). METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, four-period crossover trial, 18 recreationally active men completed placebo (CG), CR (0.3 g·kg-1), LA (6 g), and LA+CR conditions separated by at least 72 h (pr

Stroop performance in pathological gamblers.

Pathological gambling is a relatively prevalent psychiatric disorder that typically leads to severe family, social, legal, and occupational problems and is associated with a high rate of suicide attempts. Understanding the neurobiological basis of pathological gambling is a current focus of research, and emerging data have demonstrated that pathological gamblers may have impaired decision-making because of an inability to inhibit irrelevant information. In this study, we examined pathological gamblers by using the Stroop Color-Word Test, a neurocognitive task used to assess interference contro

Measuring deviant sexual interest in adolescents using the emotional Stroop task.

Adolescent sexual abusers are a heterogeneous group of offenders that often receive generic assessment and treatment services that are modeled on research findings from adult sex offender samples. The emotional Stroop task has been used to measure deviant sexual interest in adult samples. The purpose of the present study was to test whether the emotional Stroop task could also be used to assess deviant sexual interest in adolescent samples. Three groups of adolescents (a) sexual abusers (n = 24); (b) offending controls (n = 21); and (c) nonoffending controls (n = 21) completed two emotional St

Executive functions in dyslexia.

This study focused on executive functions in dyslexia. A group of 43 heavily-affected young dyslexics, divided into two groups based on the results of a receptive language test, and 20 non-dyslexic controls, were tested with a Dichotic Listening Test, the Stroop Color Word Test and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. The dyslexic subjects demonstrated significant impairment on all tasks, but with different patterns of impairment according to the subgrouping. The subgroups were equally impaired on the Dichotic Listening Test, but differed on the Stroop and the Wisconsin Tests. The data support a h

The role of tests of frontal executive function in the detection of mild dementia.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of patients with mild dementia (Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) >23), depression (Montgomery-Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS) >12) and controls on tests of frontal executive function (FEF), to see if simple tools could be an adjunct to early recognition of dementia in primary care. DESIGN: Subjects were required to score above 23 on the MMSE, and to be non-depressed unless in the depression group. Tests of FEF used were a letter based verbal fluency test, a cognitive estimates test, trail marking parts A and B, and a Stroop colour word test. Su

Automaticity of lexical access in deaf and hearing bilinguals: Cross-linguistic evidence from the color Stroop task across five languages.

The well-known Stroop interference effect has been instrumental in revealing the highly automated nature of lexical processing as well as providing new insights to the underlying lexical organization of first and second languages within proficient bilinguals. The present cross-linguistic study had two goals: 1) to examine Stroop interference for dynamic signs and printed words in deaf ASL-English bilinguals who report no reliance on speech or audiological aids; 2) to compare Stroop interference effects in several groups of bilinguals whose two languages range from very distinct to very similar

Poor readers but compelled to read: Stroop effects in developmental dyslexia.

We studied a group of 24 children with dyslexia in second to fifth primary school grades by using a discrete-trial computerized version of the Stroop Color-Word Test. Since the classic Stroop effect depends on the interference of reading with color naming, one would expect these children to show no interference or, at least, less interference than normal readers. Children with dyslexia showed, however, a Stroop effect larger than normal readers of the same age. This suggests that reading, although difficult and slow, is an inescapable step that precedes naming both in poor and in normal reader

Stroop performance is related to reading profiles in Hebrew-speaking individuals with dyslexia and typical readers.

There is a debate in the literature regarding the level of contribution of executive functions (EF) to reading comprehension (RC), in the context of the simple view of reading (SVR) model. The current study aims to create sub-profiles of reading and cognitive abilities based on a measure traditionally used for evaluating EF, that is, the Stroop task, and specifically, Stroop time. Ninety-seven adults with and without reading difficulties performed reading and cognitive tasks, including the Stroop tests. Four groups were created based on Stroop performance time and a reading profile was created

Ecological and Embodied Assessment of Inhibitory Control Using a VR Stroop Task in Cognitively Healthy Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: This study examined the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of the novel virtual reality-based Stroop test (VRST), developed based on the principles of embodied cognition. The VRST simulates a clothing-sorting task to assess inhibitory control using cognitive and behavioral (kinematic) measures. Methods: A total of 224 cognitively healthy older adults (mean age = 71.51 years) completed the VRST and a traditional Stroop test in randomized order. The VRST implemented a fixed-difficulty design consisting of 30 incongruent trials, where participants were required

Associations between physical performance and executive function in older adults with mild cognitive impairment: gait speed and the timed "up & go" test.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) are at higher risk for developing Alzheimer disease. Physical performance decline on gait and mobility tasks in conjunction with executive dysfunction has implications for accelerated functional decline, disability, and institutionalization in sedentary older adults with aMCI. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine whether performance on 2 tests commonly used by physical therapists (usual gait speed and Timed "Up & Go" Test [TUG]) are associated with performance on 2 neuropsychological tests of executive fun

The primed Stroop is not a Stroop task: Evidence from delta plots.

The Stroop interference effect - slower color naming on incongruent trials (e.g., GREEN printed in red) compared to neutral trials (e.g., PRESS printed in red) - is widely regarded as a hallmark of selective attention failure. We (Curtis et al., Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 32, 1328-1336, 2025) have previously argued that the integrated nature of the Stroop stimulus is a main factor contributing towards the robustness of this interference, which shows a characteristic positively sloped delta plot pattern. Here, we tested this claim by directly comparing the standard, integrated Stroop task w
