Two paradoxes in stuttering treatment.

UNLABELLED: The premise of this article is that effective communication should be a central, overarching goal in the treatment of stuttering. Not focusing on communication may have some unintended negative consequences on treatment. The negative consequences are the result of two paradoxes that confront clinicians and clients: the listener paradox and the communication paradox. The listener paradox concerns the different ways that typical listeners and clinicians respond to stuttering. The communication paradox concerns the use of treatment procedures that may have negative consequences on com

[Disfluency disorders other than stuttering].

Fluency disorders other than stuttering, which is the major and above all most known form, can be observed and require rehabilitation. Fluency is the quality which enables speech to flow effortlessly with a comfortable delivery, pace and simple transitions. Acquired over a period of several years during childhood, fluency can be altered by numerous neurological syndromes, such as Parkinson's disease, spasmodic dysphonia, or substitution phonations such as the esophageal or tracheoesophageal voice. Their severity is variable and judged above all by the efficacy of communication. Management of t

Beliefs and behavioural intentions towards pharmacotherapy for stuttering: A survey of adults who stutter.

PURPOSE: Although considerable efforts have been made to investigate the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments for stuttering, little is known about how the stuttering community perceives these treatments. This study aimed to assess and quantify beliefs regarding pharmacotherapy for adults who stutter and to establish whether behavioural intentions to undertake treatment were related to these beliefs. METHOD: An adapted version of the Beliefs about Medicine Questionnaire was completed by adults who stutter. Participants also reported perceptions of their stuttering including its overall

Self-perception of people who stutter regarding their experiences and results of stuttering treatments.

PURPOSE: To investigate the opinion about stuttering treatments in people who stutter, based on their answers to two open questions. METHODS: The participants were 40 adults of both genders, with self-reported stuttering. During the first phase of the research, we contacted two Brazilian nongovernmental organizations: the Brazilian Stuttering Association (ABRAGAGUEIRA) and the Brazilian Fluency Institute (IBF). These associations agreed to participate and were responsible for sending the research questions to their members via electronic mail. The first contact with the participants elucidate

Effects of stuttering severity and therapy involvement on attitudes towards people who stutter.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to explore whether stuttering severity or therapy involvement had an effect on the attitudes that individuals who do not stutter reported towards people who stutter (PWS). Two hundred and sixty (260) university students participated in this study. Direct survey procedures consisting of a 25-item semantic differential scale were utilized. Comparisons of the effects of stuttering severity, level of therapy involvement, and the interaction of these variables were completed. Results suggested that both stuttering severity and therapy involvement had signif

German Non-Stuttering Primary School Children's Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Stuttering: International Comparison and Influencing Factors.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering, as a visible and audible deviation from the norm, often provokes negative reactions and leads to social stigmatisation. Studies have shown that there is a negative stuttering stereotype, the origins of which can be traced back to early life. As environmental reactions have a significant impact on the success of therapeutic interventions, understanding public knowledge and attitudes towards stuttering is essential to mitigate these prejudices at an early stage. AIMS: The present study collects the first specific data on the knowledge of German non-stuttering primary sch

Exploring the nature of stuttering through a behavioral-neuro-modulation intervention program in bilinguals with stuttering.

PURPOSE: Investigations on identifying the nature of stuttering present varying views. The argument remains whether the stuttering dysfluencies have a motor or a linguistic foundation. Though stuttering is considered a speech-motor disorder, linguistic factors are increasingly reported to play a role in stuttering. Current literature points towards deficits in speech-related motor areas of the brain to abnormalities in linguistic planning and phonological memory playing a role in stuttering. Examining cross-linguistic generalization of treatment gains from treated to untreated language in bili

Contemporary clinical conversations about stuttering: Telling parents why their child began to stutter.

Parents of children who have begun to stutter need an explanation why this has occurred. For that explanation, clinicians have many research findings available to them from many disciplines. It may be challenging for junior clinicians and students of speech-language pathology to integrate and synthesise that knowledge for parents. The purpose of this clinical conversation is to provide guidance in that matter. The issue was discussed by speech-language pathologists and researchers. Written conversational turns in an exchange were limited to 100 words each. There was general agreement about cor

The Impact of Stuttering on Development of Self-Identity, Relationships, and Quality of Life in Women Who Stutter.

PURPOSE: The experiences of women who stutter have been underresearched. Clinicians have little guidance from the research literature on issues specific to women who stutter and are likely to have less clinical contact with this group than with men who stutter because of the higher prevalence of stuttering in men. This study explored the experiences of a small group of women who stutter with a particular focus on what the main current issues are and how gender may have influenced experiences with stuttering. METHOD: This qualitative study involved recruitment of 9 women who stutter (aged 35-8

Efficacy of the Modifying Phonation Intervals (MPI) Stuttering Treatment Program With Adults Who Stutter.

PURPOSE: This study compared a new adult stuttering treatment program (Modifying Phonation Intervals, or MPI) with the standard of care for reducing stuttered speech in adults (prolonged speech). METHOD: Twenty-seven adults who stutter were assigned to either MPI or prolonged speech treatment, both of which used similar infrastructures. Speech and related variables were assessed in 3 within-clinic and 3 beyond-clinic speaking situations for participants who successfully completed all treatment phases. RESULTS: At transfer, maintenance, and follow-up, the speech of 14 participants who success

Attitudes of a group of South African speech-language pathologists towards stutterers and stuttering therapy.

The present study aimed to examine the attitudes of a group of South African speech-language pathologists towards stuttering and stuttering therapy. Further aims were to investigate whether a stereotype of stutterers was found among these speech-language pathologists, and to determine whether there was any relationship between the attitudes held about stutterers, and the therapists' training and experience. A random probability sample of respondents was selected from the population of speech therapists registered with the Interim Medical and Dental Council of South Africa (I.M.D.C.S.A.). A sel

The Effects of Different Sources and Modalities of Stuttering Disclosure on Listeners' Perceptions of a Child Who Stutters.

INTRODUCTION: Research reveals the clinical efficacy of both verbal and written stuttering disclosure statements provided by a child who stutters (CWS) and his advocates (i.e., mother or teacher) [Lang Speech Hear Serv Sch. 2020 Jul;51(3):745-60 and Lang Speech Hear Serv Sch. 2021 Aug;52(4):1031-1048]. Although existing data reveal that both the source (i.e., self- vs. advocate disclosure) and modality (i.e., verbal or written) of stuttering disclosure yields significant improvements in the perceptions of speech skills and personality characteristics of CWS, there is a paucity of research dire

Comparison of social anxiety between Japanese adults who stutter and non-stuttering controls.

PURPOSE: Adults who stutter (AWS) often develop social anxiety disorder. This study was to provide comparative data on the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale-Japanese version (LSAS-J) from AWS and non-stuttering adult controls. METHODS: LSAS-J, a 24-item self-reported survey of social phobia and avoidance across various daily situations, was administered to 130 AWS (Mean Age = 41.5 years, SD = 15.8, 111 males) and 114 non-stuttering adults (Mean Age = 39.5, SD = 14.9, 53 males). The test-retest reliability and internal consistency of the LSAS-J were assessed. A between-subject multivariate analys

Adults who stutter lack the specialised pre-speech facilitation found in non-stutterers.

OBJECTIVES: Persistent developmental stuttering is a speech fluency disorder defined by its symptoms, where the underlying neurophysiological causes remain uncertain. This study examined the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms of the speech planning process, using facilitation in the motor cortex during speech preparation as an analogue. METHODS: transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) pulses induced motor evoked potentials (MEPs), which were recorded from the tongue. Eighteen adults who stutter (AWS) and 17 adults who do not stutter (ANS) completed three experiments, which involved read

Stuttering: neuropsychiatric features measured by content analysis of speech and the effect of risperidone on stuttering severity.

Positron-emission tomographic (PET) studies and genetic research of stuttering have recently revealed underlying cerebral neurobiologic contributing factors in this disorder. We aimed to assess whether cognitive impairment and other neuropsychiatric dimensions could be detected through computerized content analysis of short samples of speech from stutterers, and whether administration of risperidone in a double-blind placebo-controlled study could decrease the severity of stuttering, as well as any of the neuropsychiatric features of these stutterers. A group of 21 stutterers with the developm

Stuttering, language, and cognition: a review and a model of stuttering as suprasegmental sentence plan alignment (SPA).

Extant models of stuttering do not account for the emergence of stuttering at the onset of productive language use; the greater incidence of stuttering during spontaneous speech, on complex sentences, and at sentence-initial positions; the greater incidence of stuttering in bilinguals' 2nd language; the apparent deficiency of stutterers in expressive and receptive language skills; the prevalence of spontaneous recovery from stuttering; and the lack of chronic physiological or articulatory deficits in stuttering children's fluent speech. The author presents a model of stuttering as points of su

The relationship of stuttering severity and treatment length to temporal measures of stutterers' perceptually fluent speech.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between stuttering severity and treatment length to temporal measures of stutterers' perceptually fluent speech. Seventeen adult stutterers (4 mild, 8 moderate, and 5 severe) were divided into two treatment categories. One group with limited exposure to treatment (n = 7) consisted of stutterers who had completed 0-10 hr of treatment. Another group with an extensive period of treatment (n = 10) consisted of stutterers who had completed 47-212 hr of treatment. All subjects were asked to repeat a simple phrase and read a prose passage.
