Haptoglobin administration into the subarachnoid space prevents hemoglobin-induced cerebral vasospasm.

Delayed ischemic neurological deficit (DIND) is a major driver of adverse outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), defining an unmet need for therapeutic development. Cell-free hemoglobin that is released from erythrocytes into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is suggested to cause vasoconstriction and neuronal toxicity, and correlates with the occurrence of DIND. Cell-free hemoglobin in the CSF of patients with aSAH disrupted dilatory NO signaling ex vivo in cerebral arteries, which shifted vascular tone balance from dilation to constriction. We found that selective r

Persistent Visibility of the Dorsal Subarachnoid Space in Dogs With Compressive Cervical Myelopathy Can Be Explained by the Interarcuate Space.

Like with conventional myelography, circumferential attenuation of the subarachnoid space on magnetic resonance (MR) myelography may aid in the diagnosis of an acute compressive disc extrusion. Hydrated nucleus pulposus extrusion (HNPE) is characterized by the presence of extradural material above the intervertebral disc space that is isointense to CSF and may mask the attenuation of the ventral subarachnoid space. Concurrent failure of the dorsal subarachnoid space to attenuate may result in failure to recognize HNPE or underestimate its severity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of d

Trehalose decreases blood clotting in the cerebral space after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) frequently results in several serious complications, such as cerebral vasospasm. We previously reported the effect of trehalose on vasospasm, inflammatory responses, and lipid peroxidation induced by blood exposure. Herein, to further elucidate the mechanism of action of trehalose, we investigated whether or not post-administration of trehalose can directly influence blood clotting in the cistern. As a result of trehalose injection after the onset of experimental SAH, blood clotting around the basilar artery was clearly inhibited. We also found that trehalose posi

A non-traumatic approach to ventral subarachnoid space near circle of Willis.

A non-traumatic approach to the subarachnoid space near the circle of Willis is demonstrated in this study. The approach is made between the olfactory bulb and frontal lobe. Following perfusion with Evans blue dye no leakage was observed into the parenchyma indicating no tissue damage had occurred. No gross bleeding or cerebral vasospasm was visible in the middle meningeal artery (dural), the surface pial blood vessels and the vessels of the circle of Willis. In conclusion, this technique can be successfully used for studies on experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage simulated on the ventral aspe

An Association Between Fetal Subarachnoid Space and Various Pathologies Using MR Imaging.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to explore a relationship between the fetal subarachnoid space (SAS) width and various fetal pathologies, employing fetal brain MRI scans. Methods: A retrospective collection of fetal brain MRI scans of 78 fetuses was performed with sonographic indications of microcephaly, macrocephaly, or fetal growth restriction (FGR), during a 7-year period at a single tertiary center. The SAS width (named the SAS index) was manually measured in millimeters in ten specific anatomical locations (four in the axial plane and six in the coronal plane), and then converted

Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims syndrome with benign enlargement of subarachnoid space in infancy.

Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims syndrome is a rare disorder generally characterised by a craniofacial nevus with multisystemic presentations. Our patient, an infant, was brought to the emergency department in a postictal state following a first seizure episode. A physical examination showed a solitary dark brown, well-demarcated verrucous plaque extending from the patient's left temporal region to the left mandible without crossing the midline. Epibulbar choristomas were present on the ipsilateral side of the craniofacial lesion. Neuroimaging showed benign enlargement of the subarachnoid space

Brain tissue pressure gradients are dependent upon a normal spinal subarachnoid space.

Reports from our laboratory have shown that regional brain tissue pressure (RBTP) gradients develop in response to supratentorial but not posterior fossa extradural masses. We undertook this experiment to discover the mechanism of this differing response. RBTP was measured in the right and left frontal lobes (RF, LF), temporal lobes (RT, LT), midbrain (MB), and cerebellum (CB) of ten pigs. Balloons were expanded in the epidural space at C2 to occlude the subarachnoid space. A temporal extradural mass was expanded incrementally. The C2 balloon was deflated after temporal mass expansion. Expansi

[MR tomographic volumetry of the subarachnoid space in HIV-associated brain atrophy].

The CSF volume of 45 patients with HIV infection was measured at various clinical stages and the results compared with 24 normals. 60% of all patients showed increased CSF spaces as an indication of cerebral atrophy. Serial measurements were particularly valuable during the early stages of atrophy since there is marked variation in the normal CSF volume. Conventional measurements, with the exception of the width of the third ventricle, were much less sensitive than these quantitative measurements. Classification of HIV infection according to the clinical stage was useful since CSF volume and v

A model of hydrocephalus due to windkessel impairment caused by subarachnoid space obstruction.

OBJECTIVE: The traditional view that hydrocephalus due to obstruction in the subarachnoid space (SAS) is caused by malabsorption of CSF does not account for many experimental and clinical aspects of the disorder. Flow MRI reveals that nearly all CSF motion is pulsatile, and that hydrocephalus is linked to significant redistribution of pulsatility within the CSF pathways. Pulsatility in the cranium is governed by the cerebral windkessel system that buffers the energy of arterial pulsations via CSF to ensure smooth capillary blood flow. This study proposes a new model of intracranial thermodynam

Benign enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces and subdural collections-when to evaluate for abuse.

In infants without a history of trauma, subdural haemorrhages should raise the concern for an abusive head injury, particularly when they are associated with bridging vein clotting/rupture or with septations. However, non-haemorrhagic, fluid-appearing subdural collections (also called hygromas) may also be the result of abuse. Subdural collections have also been uncommonly observed in patients with benign enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces (BESS) and a few large-scale studies accurately investigate the incidence and the significance. Currently, there is a wide variation of practices in chi

Enlarged subarachnoid spaces and intracranial hemorrhage in children with accidental head trauma.

OBJECTIVE Benign external hydrocephalus (BEH) is an enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces (SASs) that can be seen in young children. It is controversial whether children with BEH are predisposed to developing subdural hemorrhage (SDH) with or without trauma. This issue is clinically relevant as a finding of unexplained SDH raises concerns about child abuse and often prompts child protection and law enforcement investigations. METHODS This retrospective study included children (1-24 months of age) who underwent head CT scanning after an accidental fall of less than 6 feet. Head CT scans were r

Constriction and dysfunction of pial arterioles after regional hemorrhage in the subarachnoid space.

Increasing evidence indicates that poor outcomes after brain hemorrhage, especially after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), can be attributed largely to dysfunction of the cerebral microcirculation. However, the cause of this dysfunction remains unclear. Here, we investigated changes in the cerebral microcirculation after regional hemorrhage in the subarachnoid space using the closed cranial window technique in mice. A single pial arteriole on the surface of the brain was punctured to induce a regional hemorrhage in the subarachnoid space. Physiological parameters were monitored during the proced

Tarlov cysts: endoscope-assisted obliteration of the communication with the spinal subarachnoid space.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The physiopathology of Tarlov or perineural cyst (PC) symptoms is unknown, but probably its filling and distention with spinal cerebrospinal fluid makes them symptomatic. The objective of this study is to describe the endoscope-assisted obliteration of the communication between PCs and the spinal subarachnoid space (SSS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2007 to 2011, four male and two female patients (median age: 45 years) with PCs were treated. They complained of lumbar, sciatic, and/or perineal pain. Physical examination was normal. The diagnosis was made by magnetic re

[The neuroevolutionary profile of the nursing infant with macrocephaly and benign enlargement of the subarachnoid space].

With the purpose of studying the neuroevolutionary prognosis of children with macrocephaly (percentile 95) and the widening of the subarachnoid space, identified using head CAT scans-five cases were selected from the Pediatric-Neurology Department from the Teaching Regional Hospital of Trujillo-Perú, seen during January 1983 and January 1988 with a follow-up of 1 and 1/2 and 3 years. All of the children showed an abnormal separation of the frontal subarachnoid space, interhemispheric fissure and Silvio incision without ventriculomegaly o a minimal dilation of the ventricular system. Air filling of the subarachnoid space over the cerebral convexities at repeat encephalography.

In order to check the constancy of convexity block, the airencephalograms (AEG) of seventeen patients who had undergone two separate examinations were reexamined. A satisfactory filling by air of the basal cisterns or Sylvian fissures was a prerequisite for including the AEG in this series. Consistent results related to air filling of the parietal region were obtained at the two examinations except in one patient with clinical signs of a pontine neoplasm. When the AEG was repeated in a very short time and with unchanged clinical conditions, the degree of air filling over the convexity was prac

Characterization of intracranial pressure variations in ventricular and subarachnoid spaces of the rat brain.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is a dynamic physiological signal shaped by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow, vascular pulsations, and brain tissue compliance, yet most knowledge of CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) hydrodynamics comes from pathological states in humans. To better understand physiological ICP variability, dual recordings were obtained in 15 healthy anesthetized Brown-Norway rats using pressure sensors connected to cannulas in the lateral ventricle (vICP) and subarachnoid space (sICP). Spectral analysis quantified cardiac and respiratory oscillations, whereas slower waves were detected by th
