The Effect of Orally Administered Dronabinol on Optic Nerve Head Blood Flow in Healthy Subjects-A Randomized Clinical Trial.

It has been hypothesized that besides its intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering potential, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may also improve ocular hemodynamics. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether single oral administration of dronabinol, a synthetic THC, alters optic nerve head blood flow (ONHBF) and its regulation in healthy subjects. The study was carried out in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-masked, two-way crossover design in 24 healthy subjects. For each study participant, 2 study days were scheduled, on which they either received capsules containing 5 mg dronabino

Diurnal variation of pulse waveform parameters determined by laser speckle flowgraphy on the optic nerve head in healthy subjects.

To investigate the diurnal variation of the pulse waveform parameters determined by laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG) on the optic nerve head (ONH) in healthy subjects. This prospective cross sectional study was conducted at Nagoya University Hospital. We studied 13 healthy volunteers whose mean age was 33.5 ± 7.6 years. Eight pulse waveform parameters on the ONH were determined by LSFG (LSFG-NAVI) every 3 hours from 6 AM to 12 PM. The intraocular pressure (IOP), systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, and heart rate (HR) in the brachial artery were also recorded. We evaluated the diur

Dynamic visual acuity during head-thrust test in canal planes in healthy subjects and patients with vestibular neuritis.

CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) during the head-thrust test (htDVA) is reliable in normal subjects, having a high specificity for the horizontal canal, so it may be useful to monitor vestibular rehabilitation in patients with vestibular neuritis (VN). OBJECTIVE: To obtain reference values for htDVA in healthy individuals and to investigate the potential application in subjects with unilateral VN. METHODS: A total of 73 healthy individuals and 50 patients with unilateral VN were included. The DVA test was performed by adjusting a sensor on the subject's head to measure head velocity.

Adaptation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex, subjective tilt, and motion sickness to head movements during short-radius centrifugation.

Head movements made while the whole body is rotating at unusually high angular velocities (here with supine body position about an earth-vertical axis) result in inappropriate eye movements, sensory illusions, disorientation, and frequently motion sickness. We investigated the acquisition and retention of sensory adaptation to cross-coupled components of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) by asking eight subjects to make headturns while being rotated at 23 rpm on two consecutive days, and again a week later. The dependent measures were inappropriate vertical VOR, subjective tilt, and motion sic

Effects of repeated snowboard exercise in virtual reality with time lags of visual scene behind body rotation on head stability and subjective slalom run performance in healthy young subjects.

CONCLUSION: After repeated snowboard exercises in the virtual reality (VR) world with increasing time lags in trials 3-8, it is suggested that the adaptation to repeated visual-vestibulosomatosensory conflict in the VR world improved dynamic posture control and motor performance in the real world without the development of motion sickness. OBJECTIVES: The VR technology was used and the effects of repeated snowboard exercise examined in the VR world with time lags between visual scene and body rotation on the head stability and slalom run performance during exercise in healthy subjects. Normative optical coherence tomography-based measurements and classification of optic nerve head parameters in adult Congolese subjects.

BACKGROUND: Normative data on optic nerve head (ONH) topographic measurements are scarce among black people residing in Africa. Such measurements obtained with imaging modalities such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) are crucial for the diagnosis and management of optic nerve diseases, particularly glaucoma. They assist clinicians in identifying deviations that may indicate disease or abnormalities. The aim of this study was to determine normal reference values of ONH topographic measurements in a Congolese adult population using OCT. METHODS: Hospital-based cross-sectional observational

The relationship between subjective shoulder discomfort and quantitative humeral head translation in baseball players; cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: High shoulder external rotation range of motion (ROM) in baseball players is associated with a higher risk of shoulder and elbow injuries. Subjective shoulder discomfort can impair performance in these athletes. While shoulder stabilization surgery is effective in non-throwing athletes, including those in collision sports, its efficacy is limited in throwing athletes. Understanding the appropriate degree of anterior and posterior shoulder structural translation is crucial for treating shoulder instability in baseball players. This study aimed to determine whether subjective shoulde

Robotic Optical Coherence Tomography of Human Subjects with Posture-Invariant Head and Eye Alignment in Six Degrees of Freedom.

Ophthalmic optical coherence tomography (OCT) has achieved remarkable clinical success but remains sequestered in ophthalmology specialty offices. Recently introduced robotic OCT systems seek to expand patient access but fall short of their full potential due to significant imaging workspace and motion planning restrictions. Here, we present a next-generation robotic OCT system capable of imaging in any head orientation or posture that is mechanically reachable. This system overcomes prior restrictions by eliminating fixed-base tracking components, extending robot reach, and planning alignment

Biomechanical Analysis of Head Subjected to Blast Waves and the Role of Combat Protective Headgear Under Blast Loading: A Review.

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a rising health concern of soldiers deployed in modern-day military conflicts. For bTBI, blast wave loading is a cause, and damage incurred to brain tissue is the effect. There are several proposed mechanisms for the bTBI, such as direct cranial entry, skull flexure, thoracic compression, blast-induced acceleration, and cavitation that are not mutually exclusive. So the cause-effect relationship is not straightforward. The efficiency of protective headgears against blast waves is relatively unknown as compared with other threats. Proper knowledge

Subject-Level Classification of Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head from Wearable IMU Gait Data Using Multilevel Feature Fusion.

Imaging underpins the diagnosis and structural staging of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) but does not directly quantify functional impairment during weight-bearing walking. We developed a subject-level ONFH classification framework using multilevel gait features acquired with wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs). Thirty healthy controls and 21 participants with imaging-confirmed ONFH completed self-paced walking trials recorded at 100 Hz. Gait cycles were segmented from bilateral foot-contact events, normalized to 120 points, and represented as 17-channel kinematic waveforms, 2

Accounting for Variance in Concussion Tolerance Between Individuals: Comparing Head Accelerations Between Concussed and Physically Matched Control Subjects.

Researchers have been collecting head impact data from instrumented football players to characterize the biomechanics of concussion for the past 15 years, yet the link between biomechanical input and clinical outcome is still not well understood. We have previously shown that even though concussive biomechanics might be unremarkable in large datasets of head impacts, the impacts causing injury are of high magnitude for the concussed individuals relative to their impact history. This finding suggests a need to account for differences in tolerance at the individual level. In this study, we ident

Diffusion-weighted imaging of the head and neck in healthy subjects: reproducibility of ADC values in different MRI systems and repeat sessions.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: DWI is typically performed with EPI sequences in single-center studies. The purpose of this study was to determine the reproducibility of ADC values in the head and neck region in healthy subjects. In addition, the reproducibility of ADC values in different tissues was assessed to identify the most suitable reference tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively studied 7 healthy subjects, with EPI and TSE sequences, on 5 MR imaging systems at 3 time points in 2 institutions. ADC maps of EPI (with 2 b-values and 6 b-values) and TSE sequences were compared. Mean ADC v

Cerebral blood flow and oxygenation during head-up tilt in patients with multiple system atrophy and healthy control subjects.

To assess cerebral hemodynamics in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA), cerebral blood flow and oxygenation were evaluated in 7 MSA patients and 9 healthy controls during a head-up tilt test (HUT) by means of transcranial Doppler ultrasonography and near-infrared spectrophotometry. In the MSA patients examined, the perfusion pressure reduction during HUT was marked, but severe reduction in blood flow velocity was prevented because of a decrease in cerebrovascular resistance. The MSA patients showed no severe reduction in cerebral oxygenation during HUT. These findings indicate that our

Rapid neck muscle adaptation alters the head kinematics of aware and unaware subjects undergoing multiple whiplash-like perturbations.

To examine whether habituation confounds the study of whiplash injury using human subjects, we quantified changes in the magnitude and temporal development of the neck muscle electromyogram and peak linear and angular head/torso kinematics of subjects exposed to sequential whiplash-like perturbations. Forty-four seated subjects (23F, 21M) underwent 11 consecutive forward horizontal perturbations (peak sled acceleration=1.5 g). Electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded over the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and cervical paraspinal (PARA) muscles with surface electrodes, and head and torso kinem
