Associations between depression, anxiety, stress, hopelessness, subjective well-being, coping styles and suicide in Chinese university students.

Suicide is a major public health concern worldwide. This study aimed to predict the suicidal behavior of Chinese university students by studying psychological measures such as hopelessness, orientation to happiness, meaning in life, depression, anxiety, stress, and coping styles. In November 2016, a stratified-clustered-random sampling approach was utilized to select subjects from two large public medical-related universities in Shandong province, China. This sample consisted of 2,074 undergraduate students (706 males, 1,368 females; mean age = 19.79±1.39 years). The students' major risk facto

Subjective correlates of stress management in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation: the predictive role of perceived heart risk factors.

Introduction: The causal attributions and perceived risk factors can affect patients' health behaviors. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess (i) the effect of an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program on perceived heart risk factors (PHRFs) and on psychological stress, and (ii) the role of changes of PHRFs at pre-post CR in predicting changes in psychological stress. Methods: In this longitudinal study, 110 CR patients were assessed from June to November 2016 in a hospital in Iran. Perceived heart risk factors and perceived stress were investigated using the PHRFs scale and the

Para-Urethral Injections with Urolastic® for Treatment of Female Stress Urinary Incontinence: Subjective Improvement and Safety.

INTRODUCTION: Female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is often treated surgically. Urethral bulking agents are a minimally invasive alternative, especially in patients suffering from intrinsic sphincter deficiency, but often with limited long-term efficacy. Urolastic® is a non-deformable, non-resorbable silicone elastomer that is used as an injectable. Its properties might result in a more durable response after injection. If this durability factor can be combined with a low complication rate, this can become a useful treatment option. We therefore assessed the subjective improvement and safe

Workplace violence, psychological stress, sleep quality and subjective health in Chinese doctors: a large cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) against healthcare workers is known as violence in healthcare settings and referring to the violent acts that are directed towards doctors, nurses or other healthcare staff at work or on duty. Moreover, WPV can cause a large number of adverse outcomes. However, there is not enough evidence to test the link between exposure to WPV against doctors, psychological stress, sleep quality and health status in China. OBJECTIVES: This study had three objectives: (1) to identify the incidence rate of WPV against doctors under a new classification, (2) to examine the

Salivary cortisol levels, subjective stress, and tinnitus intensity in tinnitus sufferers during noise exposure in the laboratory.

Tinnitus, a chronic internal noise, is thought to increase in intensity during or following external noise exposure. Yet there is no empirical evidence for this complaint in the extant literature. Recently, cortisol has been advanced as a useful tool for studying the physiological effects of noise on stress, but few, if any, studies have examined the short-term effects of noise on cortisol levels in tinnitus sufferers. This study assesses the effects of noise exposure on cortisol levels and subjective stress in tinnitus participants and controls without tinnitus. Twenty tinnitus participants a

Machine learning model for reproducing subjective sensations and alleviating sound-induced stress in individuals with developmental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: An everyday challenge frequently encountered by individuals with developmental disorders is auditory hypersensitivity, which causes distress in response to certain sounds and the overall sound environment. This study developed deep neural network (DNN) models to address this issue. One model predicts changes in subjective sound perception to quantify auditory hypersensitivity characteristics, while the other determines the modifications needed to sound stimuli to alleviate stress. These models are expected to serve as a foundation for personalized support systems for individuals

Effects of heat-exercise stress, NBC clothing, and pyridostigmine treatment on psychomotor and subjective measures of performance.

This study investigated the effects of pyridostigmine pretreatment, NBC protective gear, and heat-exercise exposure on psychomotor performance and subjective sensations in eight healthy male volunteers. Exercise in heat enhanced performance of vertical addition (+7.3%, p less than 0.001) but prolonged the reaction time (+4.4%, p less than 0.01). The effects of pyridostigmine, protective gear, and the interactions between the various stressors were not significant. Cognitive performance was not dependent on body core temperature. Multiple complaints of subjective discomfort arose from wearing t

The Leuven Prolonged Acute Stress Test (L-PAST): A novel paradigm to induce a subjective and glucocorticoid stress response for at least ninety minutes.

Laboratory stress tests typically administer stress acutely, ranging from 3 to 15 minutes. However, everyday stressors usually last longer than ten minutes (e.g., examination stressors, work stressors, and social stressors. Moreover, in some studies, it may be relevant to induce stress for a longer period to affect certain psychological or physiological parameters. To this end, we developed a novel stress test that intends to induce psychosocial stress for 90 minutes. The Leuven Prolonged Acute Stress Test (L-PAST) combines physical (hand immersion in cold water), cognitive (mental arithmetic)

Behavior and oxidative stress parameters in rats subjected to the animal's models induced by chronic mild stress and 6-hydroxydopamine.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent forms of mental illness also affecting older adults. Recent evidence suggests a relationship between MDD and neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). Individuals with PD have a predisposition to developing MDD, and both neurobiological conditions are associated with oxidative stress. Thus, we conducted this study to investigate depressive-like behavior and oxidative stress parameters using both animal models of PD and stress. Adult Wistar rats were subjected to chronic mild stress (CMS) protocol by 40 days and

Posttraumatic stress disorder is associated with enhanced interleukin-6 response to mental stress in subjects with a recent myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is prevalent among patients who survived an acute coronary syndrome, and is associated with adverse outcomes, but the mechanisms underlying these associations are unclear. Individuals with PTSD have enhanced sensitivity of the noradrenergic system to stress which may lead to immune activation. We hypothesized that survivors of a myocardial infarction (MI) who have PTSD would show an enhanced inflammatory response to acute psychological stress compared to those without PTSD. METHODS: Individuals with a verified history of MI within 8 months and

Subjective and objective stress during body exposure: a comparison of adolescents with anorexia nervosa versus high body dissatisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction (BD) is a risk factor for the development of an eating disorder (ED) and a negative predictor for treatment outcome in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). As a clinical core symptom and a relevant maintaining factor of AN, body image disturbance and BD are highly relevant target variables for therapeutic interventions. Body exposure (BE) was found as being effective for reducing BD in adolescents with EDs and high BD. However, the underlying mechanisms of BE are still not clear, with habituation processes being discussed as one possible mechanism. METHODS:

Effects of a mindfulness-induction on subjective and physiological stress response in adolescents at-risk for adult obesity.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-training may benefit stress response and stress-eating, yet few studies have experimentally tested these effects in adolescents. In this short communication, we report whether a brief mindfulness-induction affected acute stress response and stress-eating in adolescents at-risk for adult obesity. We explored disordered eating as a moderator. METHOD: Twenty-nine adolescents (age 14 ± 2 y) at-risk for adult obesity participated in a within-subjects, randomized crossover experiment. Following a 10-minute mindfulness or neutral-induction on different days in random order, t

Gender differences in subjective sleep after trauma and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms: a pilot study.

Women are at higher risk than men for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following certain types of trauma such as accidents and assaults. Sleep disturbances have been implicated in the development of PTSD. Although gender differences in objective sleep soon after trauma have been found in a prior polysomnographic study, gender differences in subjective sleep soon after trauma and their associations to the development of PTSD have not been examined. This pilot study prospectively examined whether gender moderated the relationship between subjective sleep soon after trauma and PTSD
