Salivary gland neoplasms: a descriptive analysis of the pattern seen in Enugu.

The objective of this study is to describe the pattern of salivary gland neoplasms as experienced in Enugu-Nigeria. Patients are selected from those attending the Otorhinolaryngology units of the author at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital and Balsam Clinics both in Enugu from January 1992 to December 1997, with tumours of salivary gland origin. Non-neoplastic lesions were excluded. There were forty-one (41) patients with salivary gland neoplastic growths in the following sites: parotids (25) submandibular gland (SMG) (10) and minor (6). There were 15 males, 26 females; age range 10-

Cavernous Haemangioma of the Submandibular Triangle Eluding the Gland - A Case Report.

RATIONALE: Haemangiomas are benign vascular malformations. They are common neoplasms of infancy but seldom manifest at birth. Although common in the head & neck region, they are rare in the submandibular region. Despite being benign, surgical treatment is necessary if it causes significant functional or aesthetic compromise. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient's primary complaint was swelling in the submandibular region. DIAGNOSIS: Initial examination and imaging studies were suggestive of sialolithiasis due to the presence of multiple calcifications. Ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imagin

An IgG4-Related Salivary Gland Disorder: A Case Series Presenting with a Different Clinical Setting.

Küttner tumor is a chronic inflammatory disease that presents with a firm swelling of the submandibular gland and often mimics a neoplasm. Recently evidence suggests that Küttner tumor may be a type of disorder characterized by IgG4-related inflammations. Herein, we report 3 cases of submandibular gland swellings with severe fibrosis, inflammation with marked lymphoplasmacytic infiltration; this pathology mimics clinical manifestation of a malignant tumor in 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) findings.

Oncocytic lipoadenoma of the submandibular gland.

We report a case of oncocytic lipoadenoma of the submandibular gland, previously unrecognized benign tumor of the salivary gland. The patient was a 66-year-old Japanese woman with a left submandibular mass, measuring 11 x 7.5 x 5 cm. Microscopically, the mass was completely surrounded by a thin fibrous connective tissue capsule, and was composed of an intimate admixture of mature fat cells and oncocytes. There have been no English reports of such a neoplasm in the salivary gland with the exception of one recent case report of lipoadenoma of the parotid gland without oncocytic features. We prop

[Epidemiology of non-malignant salivary gland tumours based on 675 cases].

Neoplasm of salivary glands constitutes about 3% of all tumours of head and neck. Within the category we can differentiate tumours of a very different histological structure. What lies behind such great differences in the changes within the salivary glands is complex embryogenesis of the glands. About 80% of all tumours of salivary glands is located in parotid gland, from 10 to 20% - in submandibular gland and several percent in sublingual and small salivary gland. This work aims at the assessment of the frequency of occurrence of non-malignant neoplasm in parotid and submandibular gland based

Malignant salivary gland tumors: squamous cell carcinoma of the submandibular gland in a child.

PURPOSE: Malignant neoplasms of the salivary glands are extremely unusual in the pediatric age group. METHODS: We report an 11-year-old boy who presented with a mass in the left submandibular region and a second mass in the jugularfacial venous angle. RESULTS: Histologic evaluation determined that this was a squamous cell carcinoma of the submandibular gland with metastasis to a cervical node. Review of the literature was undertaken to identify the rate of malignant salivary gland tumors in children. Malignant salivary gland tumors are extremely rare in children. When malignancy does occur,

Intraoral approach for the treatment of submandibular salivary gland mixed tumors.

Pleomorphic adenoma represents a most common benign neoplasm of major salivary glands. Most occurrences of this benign tumor in the submandibular gland have been treated surgically without difficulty via transcervical approach. However, a few clinical problems in the transcervical approach have been mentioned, such as nerve injury or aesthetic scaring. In this study, we introduced the intraoral approach for the removal of the submandibular mixed tumor. In total, 12 cases of pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland were treated via intraoral approach. The surgical technique and morbidity

Minimally invasive video-assisted submandibular sialadenectomy: surgical technique and results from two institutions.

BACKGROUND: Submandibular gland excision is traditionally performed using a transcervical approach. However, innovative surgical trials have recently been conducted to investigate techniques that can prevent or reduce visible scarring and nerve injury. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of a new approach to submandibular gland excision that is based on the use of a minimally invasive video-assisted technique and an ultrasound scalpel in an endoscopic neck surgery program with a low annual flow of procedures. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 15 patients with subman

Salivary gland tumors - our experience.

Salivary gland neoplasms represent the most complex and diverse group of tumors encountered by the head and neck oncologist. Their diagnosis and management is complicated by their relative infrequency (1% of head and neck tumors)1, the limited amount of pre-treatment information available and the wide range of biologic behavior seen with the different pathologic lesion. Approximately 80% of salivary gland tumors are found in the parotid gland, 10 to 15% in the submandibular gland and 5 to 10% in the minor salivary glands. This retrospective study was conducted at government Medical college & H

Paediatric salivary gland epithelial neoplasms.

Salivary gland epithelial neoplasms in children are rare. Clinicians of all disciplines need to have a high level of suspicion when a non-inflammatory single mass lesion presents in the parotid or submandibular glands. There is high likelihood of malignancy when such a mass presents. Surgery is the primary treatment of choice in the majority of cases, with the addition of adjuvant radiotherapy +/- chemotherapy when the diagnosis is a high-grade tumour and/or when the malignancy presents as a large mass or is associated with local tissue invasion. Minor salivary gland neoplasms also present, th

Kuttner tumour: an unusual cause of enlargement of a minor salivary gland in the lip.

Kuttner tumour is benign, chronic, sclerosing sialadenitis that usually occurs in the submandibular gland and is regarded as a salivary gland neoplasm because of its clinical features. We describe a tumour arising from a minor salivary gland of the upper lip. To our knowledge, there are only two previously reported cases.

Head and Neck Extranodal Interdigitating Dendritic Cell Sarcoma: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is an exceedingly rare neoplasm originating from professional antigen presenting cells normally located in the T zone of the lymph node. The purpose of this report was to describe the first case of the IDCS of the submandibular gland and perform a review of the literature of head and neck IDCS. We present a case of an 81-year-old man with a 5 months history of slowly enlarging painless mass in right submandibular region. Fine needle aspiration cytology was suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma. The patient underwent surgical resection of the right

A rare case of a mammary analog secretory carcinoma of the right submandibular gland.

Salivary gland cancer is one of the most common malignant neoplasms of head and neck. Not only is it rare but its clinical course is also very heterogeneous. A 64-year-old woman was diagnosed with submandibular gland carcinoma. We performed an ultrasound examination and a magnetic resonance imaging of the head and neck, which revealed an oval expansive process in the right submandibular salivary gland, indicative of an aggressive neoplasm, such as adenocarcinoma. Surgical excision and histological examination were conducted reporting macroscopically a whitish nodular formation measuring 1.5 ×

Diagnosis and management of neoplastic lesions of the submandibular triangle.

Review of submandibular triangle neoplasms (benign and malignant) treated at a tertiary referral centre in the United Kingdom (1986-2004). One hundred and seven cases identified via computerised search of histopathology records over the 18 year review period. Retrospective review clinical notes and collation with data maintained prospectively by the senior author. Forty nine benign and 58 malignant neoplasms of the submandibular triangle were reviewed. Definitive diagnosis was by excision and pathological examination. Pleomorphic adenoma (n=37) were the most common benign neoplasms. For malign

Cervical metastases from pulmonary epidermoid carcinoma.

A patient with a right latero-cervical swelling of three-months history was observed. Fine needle aspiration biopsy showed the presence of metastases of epidermoid carcinoma moderately differentiated. No signs or symptoms of head and neck neoplasm were presents. After instrumental evaluation the primary neoplasm was localised at the left lung and metastases were also localised in the right submandibular gland. Although metastases from pulmonary epidermoid carcinoma are normally bloodborne, in this case lymphatic metastases involving cervical areas were present, probably secondarily the submand
