[Role of cryptosporidiosis in infants in Gabon. Results of two prospective studies].

Two epidemiological surveys of cryptosporidiosis in urban and suburban areas of Libreville, Gabon, Equatorial Africa, were conducted in children. On 450 fecal samples on the first study, Cryptosporidium sp. has been seen about 3.11%. For the second survey, on 296 children, aged between 0 and 2 years, with acute diarrhoea, the rate of infestation was 24%. The maxima was observed for infants aged between 6-18 months, in case of malnutrition and during wet seasons.

St. Louis Encephalitis virus mosquito vectors dynamics in three different environments in relation to remotely sensed environmental conditions.

In Argentina the St. Louis Encephalitis virus (SLEV) is an endemic and widely distributed pathogen transmitted by the cosmopolitan mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus. During two outbreaks in Córdoba city, in 2005 and 2010, Culex interfor was also found infected, but its role as vector of SLEV is poorly known. This mosquito species is distributed from central Argentina to southern Brazil. The primary aim of this study was to analyze the population dynamic of Cx. interfor and Cx. quinquefasciatus in three different environments (urban, suburban and non-urban) in relation to remotely sensed environm

Disparities in anticoagulation therapy for older adults with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: a comparative study of urban and suburban communities.

BACKGROUND: Non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) carries a severe risk of ischemic stroke, making anticoagulation therapy the cornerstone of prophylaxis. However, real-world data on anticoagulation management at the primary care level remain sparse. This study aims to evaluate the current landscape of anticoagulation therapy among older NVAF patients undergoing community health examinations in Shanghai, China, and to analyze the disparities between urban and suburban populations. METHODS: A stratified cross-sectional study was conducted across four community health centers (CHCs)-two urban

Reduced West Nile Virus Transmission Around Communal Roosts of Great-Tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus).

West Nile virus has caused several outbreaks among humans in the Phoenix metropolitan area (Arizona, southwest USA) within the last decade. Recent ecologic studies have implicated Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex tarsalis as the mosquito vectors and identified three abundant passerine birds-great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus), house sparrow (Passer domesticus), and house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus)-as key amplifiers among vertebrates. Nocturnal congregations of certain species have been suggested as critical for late summer West Nile virus amplification. We evaluated the hypothesis tha

Elevation and cholera: an epidemiological spatial analysis of the cholera epidemic in Harare, Zimbabwe, 2008-2009.

BACKGROUND: In highly populated African urban areas where access to clean water is a challenge, water source contamination is one of the most cited risk factors in a cholera epidemic. During the rainy season, where there is either no sewage disposal or working sewer system, runoff of rains follows the slopes and gets into the lower parts of towns where shallow wells could easily become contaminated by excretes. In cholera endemic areas, spatial information about topographical elevation could help to guide preventive interventions. This study aims to analyze the association between topographic

Analysis of Types of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders in Suburban Areas: An Epidemiological Study.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMDs) are a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles, and associated structures. Suburban populations often experience barriers to healthcare access, potentially influencing TMD prevalence and management. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence and types of TMDs in suburban areas, identify associated risk factors, and assess the patterns of healthcare-seeking behavior among affected individuals. METHODS: This cross-sectional epidemiological research was conducted in suburban regions over six months. A tot

[A case of external human ophthalmomyiasis by Oestrus ovis in Toulouse (France)].

We report a case of external human ophthalmomyiasis by OEstrus ovis was observed in a child living in southwestern France. The patient was contaminated on the playground of a school in a suburban village near Toulouse. Eleven first stage larvae were extracted from the eye. This case illustrates that contamination can occur in suburban areas of a large city remote from any cattle breeding zone.

Housing First for long-term shelter dwellers with psychiatric disabilities in a suburban county: a four-year study of housing access and retention.

Housing First is an effective intervention that ends and prevents homelessness for individuals with severe mental illness and co-occurring addictions. By providing permanent, independent housing without prerequisites for sobriety and treatment, and by offering support services through consumer-driven Assertive Community Treatment teams, Housing First removes some of the major obstacles to obtaining and maintaining housing for consumers who are chronically homeless. In this study, consumers diagnosed with severe mental illness and who had the longest histories of shelter use in a suburban count

A Preliminary Study of New Parents, Sleep Disruption, and Driving: A Population at Risk?

BACKGROUND: Drowsy driving is estimated to be a causal factor in 2-16 % of vehicular crashes. Several populations are reported to be at high risk for drowsy driving accidents, including shift workers, teenage drivers, medical residents, and pilots. Although new parents are known to have significant sleep disruption, no study has investigated vehicular accidents or near miss accidents in this population. METHODS: A preliminary cross-sectional, anonymous survey of parents who had given birth within the previous 12 months. Participants were asked about their sleep, including validated measures o

Zoonotic implications of white-footed mice habitat selection and territoriality in fragmented landscapes.

White-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) populations can thrive in fragmented suburban and urban parks and residential spaces and play a pivotal role in the spread and prevalence of tick-borne diseases. We collected spatial data on 58 individual mice living at the intersection of county park land and residential land in suburban Howard County, MD, U.S.A. We analyzed mouse density, home-range size and overlap, and a Bayesian mixed-effects model to identify the habitats where they were found relative to where they were caught, as well as a resource selection function for general habitat use. We
