DRESS syndrome (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms) is a severe, rare and potentially lethal idiosyncratic condition associated with the use of some drugs. Given its broad spectrum of presentation, clinical suspicion is essential for management, since it requires the immediate withdrawal of the culprit drug, support measures and the use of corticosteroids as the first line of treatment. We report a 24-year-old woman with a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis with joint involvement despite the use of infliximab, who presented symptoms, signs and laboratory compatible with DRESS s

The list of drugs associated with acute pancreatitis is increasing with each passing year. Nevertheless, knowledge of drug-induced pancreatitis (DIP) are often curtailed by the limited availability of evidence needed to implicate given agents, especially for non-prescription medications. Indeed, the majority of available data are derived from case reports, case series, or case-control studies. We present a case chemically and radiologically proven pancreatitis in a 43-year-old female who was on sulfasalazine as a maintenance therapy for ulcerative colitis.

BACKGROUND: Sulfasalazine (SSZ), which has an arylamine sulfonamide structure, is an anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of many rheumatic diseases. Various adverse effects have been reported related to SSZ. In the present study, we aimed to define the frequency of SSZ-related hypersensitivity reaction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
METHODS: A total of 136 patients were included in this study. During follow-ups, reaction type, reaction duration, and drug doses were recorded in patients who developed hypersensitivity reactions. Drugs were discontinue

Agranulocytosis is a rare but serious adverse effect of sulfasalazine treatment. We present a case of a 51-year-old woman receiving sulfasalazine for inflammatory arthritis presenting with sore throat, fever, lethargy and leucopenia (white cell count 0.9 × 10(9)/L). After 9 days of treatment with filgrastim (granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, G-CSF), her white cell count increased to 77.4 × 10(9)/L. This case highlights the importance of recognising sulfasalazine-induced agranulocytosis and the management of hyperleucocytosis following G-CSF treatment, to prevent harmful sequelae.

INTRODUCTION: Antimalaria agents and thalidomide are two reference drugs for discoid lupus erythematosus. In non-responders or after secondary resistance or contraindications, there are a number of alternative therapeutics which are less effective and more toxic. We therefore conducted an open study in patients with discoid lupus erythematosus treated with sulfasalazine.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven men and four women (mean age 40 years) with severe discoid lupus erythematosus (mean duration of disease 14 years) were treated with sulfasalazine (2 g/d). This treatment was initiated after a prev

Erythema elevatum diutinum (EED) is a rare, chronic small-vessel vasculitis that presents as firm, red, violaceous, or brown papules and nodules on the extensor surfaces of the limbs. Oral dapsone is considered first-line therapy for EED; in the current case report, a patient presenting with EED began dapsone treatment and symptoms subsided within two weeks. Seven months later, the patient became pregnant and stopped dapsone owing to her concerns with dapsone use during pregnancy, resulting in recurrence of EED symptoms. We present a novel treatment approach with oral sulfasalazine, which was

INTRODUCTION: Sulfasalazine (SASP) is a drug commonly used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease (CD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A high incidence of side effects limits therapy with this drug. Getting a wider knowledge of drug pharmacology, indications and side effects is essential to ensure the best possible clinical care, minimizing toxicity and inappropriate use.
AREAS COVERED: This paper gives an overview of recent research about SASP and its main adverse effects, highlighting the mechanisms underlying them. To give an ove

The purpose of this study was to test whether sulfasalazine has a protective action against interstitial inflammation and the development of renal fibrosis in obstructive nephropathy. Female rats were subjected to a sham (n = 10) or unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO, n = 30). UUO was induced in rats by ligating the left ureter. Three days after operation, rats subjected to UUO were randomized to receive tretment with either sulfasalazine (100 mg/kg) or vehicle every day for the last 7 days of the experiment. At 10 days following UUO, the obstructed kidney exhibited tubulointerstitial injury

BACKGROUND: Antihistamines are the standard treatment for chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU). For patients whose urticaria is unresponsive to antihistamines, the treatment options are limited. During the previous decade, there have been several case reports demonstrating success with sulfasalazine therapy. In this article, we present a case series evaluating sulfasalazine therapy for antihistamine-unresponsive CIU.
OBSERVATIONS: Nineteen patients with antihistamine-unresponsive CIU were treated with sulfasalazine between 2002 and 2005. During sulfasalazine therapy, 14 patients (74%) reported

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of photo-induced Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) due to sulfasalazine therapy.
CASE SUMMARY: Photo-induced SJS associated with sulfasalazine therapy occurred in a 34-year-old white man diagnosed as having seronegative symmetrical polyarthritis with no predisposing factors. According to his medical record, the patient had received methotrexate, levofolinate calcium, deflazacort, and diclofenac sodium as needed. Two months prior to admission, methotrexate and diclofenac sodium were suspended and treatment with sulfasalazine was started. The patient presented to our em

OBJECTIVE: Sulfasalazine (SSZ) is an anti-rheumatic drug that has been used to treat chronic arthritis. In many reports, the use of SSZ in children with systemic onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) revealed frequent side effects which required discontinuation of the drug. We examined whether there were frequent side effects of SSZ in patients with adult-onset Still's Disease (AOSD).
METHODS: From July 1990 to April 1998, we followed 41 AOSD patients. Ten were given SSZ for the treatment of arthritis and the side effects were studied. We also studied 109 consecutive patients with RA who

A case of severe sulfasalazine-induced hepatotoxicity is reported in a 14-year-old girl with Crohn's disease. Fourteen days after beginning sulfasalazine, she developed a systemic reaction characterized by high fever, maculopapular rash, lymphadenopathy, abdominal pain, and malaise, with tender hepatomegaly and elevated liver functions, leukemoid reaction, with eosinophilia, and immune complexes. She responded promptly to high-dose intravenous steroids with complete recovery. This case was compared to the three similar pediatric cases in the literature. The latent period was 11-19 days between

Overexpression of Sxc-, a cystine/glutamate antiporter is implicated in several neurological disorders including epilepsy. Physiologically, it regulates the hippocampal synaptic glutamate pool, influencing the neuronal excitability. Sulfasalazine (SAS) recently garnered interest owing to its system xc- (Sxc-) inhibitory potential. Therefore, the current study investigated the effects of SAS in two distinct models, (i) maximal electroshock (MES) induced acute seizure model and (ii) Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) induced kindling model of chronic epilepsy and associated cognitive impairment. Initially,

Sulfasalazine (SSZ) remains a valuable treatment option for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), especially in women of childbearing age, and is considered safe in pregnancy and lactation. However, the adverse effects in the form of allergic reactions, rashes, feverishness, and gastrointestinal symptoms are not uncommon and usually resolve on discontinuation of the drug. Despite the potential adverse effects, the occurrences are infrequently reported. Agranulocytosis (ANC < 500 cell/cumm) is a rare complication of SSZ that may be potentially life-threatening. We report two cases of SSZ-induced agranuloc

Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) also known as typhlitis is a serious condition that has been described in immunosuppressed hosts including patients with leukemia, HIV and in patients on chemotherapy. We present the first case of female on sulfasalazine for psoriatic arthritis, otherwise healthy, who was diagnosed with NE involving the cecum and rectum. This adds up to the cases of NE diagnosed in nononcologic conditions. A 65-year-old female with a history of psoriatic arthritis on sulfasalazine, presented to the emergency department (ED) after an episode of syncope. She was complaining of a fe
